Mobile agents and knowledge discovery in ubiquitous computing
2004
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a knowledge discovery strategy to be performed by mobile agents in an augmented reality (AR) scenario. AR entities are implemented by mobile agents who perform all the behaviors of cooperating entities. Among other tasks, mobile agents implement a resource discovery strategy, which is aimed at filling lacking entities with missing methods and knowledge rules. A three layer entity description model and a cooperation mechanism are discussed, which allow knowledge and methods to be shared between entities in augmented reality. Three layers host three different projection descriptions of an AR entity respectively are: (1) a semantic projection for knowle…
Bicommutants of reduced unbounded operator algebras
2009
The unbounded bicommutant $(\mathfrak M_{E'})''$ of the {\em reduction} of an O*-algebra $\MM$ via a given projection $E'$ weakly commuting with $\mathfrak M$ is studied, with the aim of finding conditions under which the reduction of a GW*-algebra is a GW*-algebra itself. The obtained results are applied to the problem of the existence of conditional expectations on O*-algebras.
Induced and reduced unbounded operator algebras
2012
The induction and reduction precesses of an O*-vector space \({{\mathfrak M}}\) obtained by means of a projection taken, respectively, in \({{\mathfrak M}}\) itself or in its weak bounded commutant \({{\mathfrak M}^\prime_{\rm w}}\) are studied. In the case where \({{\mathfrak M}}\) is a partial GW*-algebra, sufficient conditions are given for the induced and the reduced spaces to be partial GW*-algebras again.
Intra-visual conflict in visually induced motion sickness
2011
Abstract Motion sickness (MS) can be a debilitating side-effect not just of sea travel, but also when immersed in video games or virtual environments (visually induced MS). To explore the impact of visual display parameters on motion sickness, we presented footage taken on an automobile race track to different groups of observers during three experiments. In Experiment 1, one group watched the movie wearing a head-mounted display (HMD) and a second group looked at a large projection screen with unrestricted view. Resolution and visual angle were equated. In contrast to common assumption, the projection screen produced significantly higher motion sickness scores than the HMD. To understand t…
Projective Architecture
2009
Michele Sbacchi investigates the real influence of the notion of projection on architectural design before and during the age of Guarini. He takes into consideration concepts such as light and shadow, abstract line, plane, section, projective geometry and perspective. To do this he looks at the ideas of Gregorius Saint Vincent, Alberti, Guarini, Desargues and de l’Orme, among others.
BuscaPalabras: a program for deriving orthographic and phonological neighborhood statistics and other psycholinguistic indices in Spanish.
2005
This article describes a Windows program that enables users to obtain a broad range of statistics concerning the properties of word and nonword stimuli in Spanish, including word frequency, syllable frequency, bigram and biphone frequency, orthographic similarity, orthographic and phonological structure, concreteness, familiarity, imageability, valence, arousal, and age-of-acquisition measures. It is designed for use by researchers in psycholinguistics, particularly those concerned with recognition of isolated words. The program computes measures of orthographic similarity online, with respect to either a default vocabulary of 31,491 Spanish words or a vocabulary specified by the user. In a…
Off-axis focal shift for rotationally nonsymmetric screens
2009
We report on an analytical formulation for evaluating the amplitude distribution along any line directed toward the geometrical focus of a spherical wave front that passes through a rotationally nonsymmetric diffracting screen. Our formula consists of two factors. The first factor involves the one-dimensional Fourier transform of the projection of the screen function onto the off-axis line. The second factor depends on the inverse distance to the screen and permits us to recognize the existence of focal shift along off-axis lines.
First Dark Matter Search Results from the XENON1T Experiment
2017
We report the first dark matter search results from XENON1T, a ∼2000-kg-target-mass dual-phase (liquid-gas) xenon time projection chamber in operation at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy and the first ton-scale detector of this kind. The blinded search used 34.2 live days of data acquired between November 2016 and January 2017. Inside the (1042±12)-kg fiducial mass and in the [5,40] keVnr energy range of interest for weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter searches, the electronic recoil background was (1.93±0.25)×10-4 events/(kg×day×keVee), the lowest ever achieved in such a dark matter detector. A profile likelihood analysis shows that the data are consisten…
Extending CSG with projections: Towards formally certified geometric modeling
2015
We extend traditional Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) trees to support the projection operator. Existing algorithms in the literature prove various topological properties of CSG sets. Our extension readily allows these algorithms to work on a greater variety of sets, in particular parametric sets, which are extensively used in CAD/CAM systems. Constructive Solid Geometry allows for algebraic representation which makes it easy for certification tools to apply. A geometric primitive may be defined in terms of a characteristic function, which can be seen as the zero-set of a corresponding system along with inequality constraints. To handle projections, we exploit the Disjunctive Normal Form,…
Approche coopérative pour l'acquisition et l'observation de formes tridimensionnelles
2009
Technologic progres can reduce the barrier between real image and virtual image so far it is really difficult to recognize them. When virtual reality is well done, augmented reality, from virtual world to real world, is still developped. We want to project a virtual texture onto a 3D real object. By using cameras and projector, we estimate its real pose in the virtual reference by projecting a coded pattern to find points of correspondence between cameras and projector onto the textureless object, where common detector of points of correspondence are useless. We combine the calibration of the system and these points to estimate the 3D position of the object, and then register with a fine mo…
