In search of proper pronunciation: students’ practices of soliciting help during read-aloud

 This ar cle examines Finnish L2 learners’ interactional practices of flagging trouble in pronouncing words when reading aloud texts in English. Using conversation analysis, it describes how students employ three repair initiaon techniques – direct requests, trying out, and aborting the reading – as methods through which they mobilize teachers’ help in the form of a model pronunciation of the target word. Foreign language pronunciation skills and musical aptitude A study of Finnish adults with higher education

Abstract The main aim of this study was to examine second language production and discrimination skills in the light of musical aptitude. Our study was conducted in university settings in south-western Finland. English was used as a model for the second language due to its popularity among young adults. There were three types of tests used in this study: a pronunciation test, a phonemic listening discrimination task, and the Seashore test as an index of the musical aptitude. Pētījuma mērķis bija izstrādāt uz tehnoloģijām balstītus vingrinājumus, kas varētu palīdzēt mācīt studentiem angļu valodas līdzskaņu aspirācijas aspektus.  In this study, we explore how sentence stress is described in pronunciation assessment. The data, also used in two previous studies, consist of listener ratings of Finnish-speaking learners’ pronunciation in read-aloud and free speech. The listeners rated the speakers’ pronunciation on segmental and suprasegmental level on a numeric scale and verbally. Typical descriptions of sentence stress in the data focus on specific error categories and general comments.
