Titanium Lattice Structures Produced via Additive Manufacturing for a Bone Scaffold: A Review
2023
The progress in additive manufacturing has remarkably increased the application of lattice materials in the biomedical field for the fabrication of scaffolds used as bone substitutes. Ti6Al4V alloy is widely adopted for bone implant application as it combines both biological and mechanical properties. Recent breakthroughs in biomaterials and tissue engineering have allowed the regeneration of massive bone defects, which require external intervention to be bridged. However, the repair of such critical bone defects remains a challenge. The present review collected the most significant findings in the literature of the last ten years on Ti6Al4V porous scaffolds to provide a comprehensive summa…
Collective agency and the concept of ‘public’ in public involvement: A practice-oriented analysis
2016
Background Public involvement activities are promoted as measures for ensuring good governance in challenging fields, such as biomedical research and innovation. Proponents of public involvement activities include individual researchers as well as non-governmental and governmental organizations. However, the concept of ‘public’ in public involvement deserves more attention by researchers because it is not purely theoretical: it has important practical functions in the guidance, evaluation and translation of public involvement activities. Discussion This article focuses on collective agency as one property a public as a small group of participants in a public involvement activity could exhib…
Climate variation during the Holocene influenced the skeletal properties of Chamelea gallina shells in the North Adriatic Sea (Italy)
2021
Understanding how marine taxa will respond to near-future climate changes is one of the main challenges for management of coastal ecosystem services. Ecological studies that investigate relationships between the environment and shell properties of commercially important marine species are commonly restricted to latitudinal gradients or small-scale laboratory experiments. This paper aimed to explore the variations in shell features and growth of the edible bivalve Chamelea gallina from the Holocene sedimentary succession to present-day thanatocoenosis of the Po Plain-Adriatic Sea system (Italy). Comparing the Holocene sub-fossil record to modern thanatocoenoses allowed obtaining an insight o…
Halloysite-Based Bionanocomposites
2017
Scientific research has been invigorated by a new class of biodegradable materials as alternatives to polymers derived from fossils. Such biomaterials can also offer economic advantages because they are derived from renewable resources. Several biopolymers (gelatin, chitin, chitosan, starch, pectin, cellulose and its modified versions, etc.) have been exploited to produce films and formulations. Their use is limited because of fast degradation, predominant hydrophilic character, and, in some cases, unsatisfactory mechanical properties. However, the properties of these polymers can be improved by using inorganic fillers such as additives. Halloysite nanotube is a promising green filler for t…
Functional biopolymer-based nanocomposites incorporating graphene nanoplatelets
2016
The effectiveness of the antimicrobial activity over time is mainly determined by the release rate of the antimicrobial compounds. The rate of release depends on different factors such as preparation method, environmental conditions, interactions between antimicrobial and matrix. In this regard, nanoparticles can potentially be used to control the release of antimicrobial agents. Moreover, it is well known that the incorporation of nano-sized fillers into a biopolymeric matrix is an effective way to improve its properties. Aim of this work was to prepare and characterize biopolymer-based nanocomposites with antimicrobial properties. In particular, graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) as fillers an…
Antibacterial biopolymeric foams: Structure–property relationship and carvacrol release kinetics
2019
Abstract In this work, the feasibility of antibacterial biopolymeric foams containing carvacrol (CRV) for potential food packaging applications was investigated. Sodium bicarbonate (SB) was chosen as foaming agent and a commercial biodegradable polymer, Mater-Bi® (MB), as a matrix. MB/SB and MB/SB/CRV systems were prepared by melt mixing and the foaming process was conducted in a laboratory press. The influence of foaming agent and antibacterial additive content was investigated. The foamed samples were characterized through morphological analysis, mechanical tests and measurements of CRV release kinetics. Moreover, a mathematical model, i.e. power law model, was used to fit the release dat…
Production and characterisation of recombinant forms of human pulmonary surfactant protein C (SP-C):Structure and surface activity
2006
Udgivelsesdato: 2006-Apr Surfactant protein C (SP-C) is an essential component for the surface tension-lowering activity of the pulmonary surfactant system. It contains a valine-rich alpha helix that spans the lipid bilayer, and is one of the most hydrophobic proteins known so far. SP-C is also an essential component of various surfactant preparations of animal origin currently used to treat neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) in preterm infants. The limited supply of this material and the risk of transmission of infectious agents and immunological reactions have prompted the development of synthetic SP-C-derived peptides or recombinant humanized SP-C for inclusion in new prepar…
On the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type theorems
2017
This dissertation is devoted to the study of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property in different contexts. In Chapter 1 we give a historical resume and the motivation behind this property as the classics Bishop-Phelps and Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorems. We define the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (BPBp) and we comment on some important current results. In Chapter 2 we study similar properties to the BPBp. First, we define the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás point property (BPBpp). The BPBpp is stronger than the BPBp. We study it for bounded linear operators and then for bilinear mappings. After that, we study two more similar properties: properties 1 and 2. Property 2 is just the dual property of th…
Evaluation of the laboratory prediction of surface properties of bituminous mixtures. Construction and Building Materials. Volume 23. Issue 2. Elsevi…
2009
An experimental and analytical investigation was carried out both in laboratory and in situ on wearing courses. The approach presented in this paper aims to predict the in situ density and surface properties of bituminous layers, during the phase of mix design in laboratory. Therefore, the main attempt of this study is to identify, amongst the commonly available laboratory equipments, the most adequate for producing specimens that, used for carrying out simple and reliable laboratory test, allow the prediction of the surface characteristics of the mixture as laid on site. This is done by comparing the data collected from an experimental site with those calculated from laboratory specimens c…
Almond by-products: Extraction and characterization of phenolic compounds and evaluation of their potential use in composite dough with wheat flour
2018
Blanched skins and blanching water, by-products of almond processing, were evaluated as potential ingredients of bakery products. The research included three phases: i) optimization of skin drying; ii) optimization of quali-quantitative determination of phenolic compounds, by comparing three extracting protocols; iii) assessment of the impact of by-products on the rheology of composite meals with wheat flour. Besides being less time-consuming, drying at 60 °C for 30 min lowered effectively skin moisture (7.86 g/100 g) and kept better odor notes (leafy and rancid odor scored 6.1 and 0.2, respectively), as well as higher content of phenolics (813.89 µg/g, with the most effective extracting me…
