Y179C, F486L and N550H are BRCA1 variants that may be associated with breast cancer in a Sicilian family: results of a 5-year GOIM (Gruppo Oncologico…
2006
Background Over 600 different pathogenic mutations have been identified in the BRCA1 gene. Nevertheless, numerous missense mutations of unknown biological function still exist. Understanding of biological significance of these mutations should help in genetic counselling to carriers and their families. Patients and methods A total of 104 patients with breast and/or ovarian cancer whose genetic counselling answered the criteria of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO 2003), were prospectively screened for mutations in all coding exons of the BRCA1 gene by automatic direct sequencing. Results During these mutational screening procedures one case presented three mutations classified…
Problems with variation: an educational experience of cultural transposition with prospective primary teachers
2022
The paper presents some theoretical reflections and some methodological notes about a Professional Development (PD) path worked out during the last two years by Italian researchers for prospective Primary teachers. The theoretical construct of Cultural Transposition defines the framework of the PD path's activities and the related research. It was used to define an interesting cultural lent to delineate possible new approaches for effective pre-service teacher education programs, in particular for the Primary level. The defined methodology was based on the possibility to reflect about the decentralization of didactic practices based on a specific cultural context through one or more contact…

Promotion of Reading Interests in the Study Process at the University and Lessons in School
2015
<p><em>The necessity of promoting reading interests in connection with the problems that have to be solved today and in near future in school, university and the society on the whole puts forward the task for the prospective teachers of literature to master not only theoretical knowledge in their study process but also to acquire skills necessary for their future pedagogical work so that they are able to choose the most suitable methodological approach for the interpretation of a literary work in each teaching/learning situation.</em></p>

Evaluation of Changes in Gut Microbiota in Patients with Crohn’s Disease after Anti-Tnfα Treatment: Prospective Multicenter Observational Study
2020
Background: Crohn’s disease is believed to result from the interaction between genetic susceptibility, environmental factors and gut microbiota, leading to an aberrant immune response. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative changes in the microbiota of patients with Crohn’s disease after six months of anti-tumor-necrosis factor (anti-TNFα) (infliximab or adalimumab) treatment and to determine whether these changes lead to the recovery of normal microbiota when compared to a control group of healthy subjects. In addition, we will evaluate the potential role of the Faecalibacterium prausnitzii/Escherichia coli and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii/Clostridium…
The clinical benefit of instituting a prospective clinical community-acquired respiratory virus surveillance program in allogeneic hematopoietic stem…
2019
Highlights • Rapid detection methods used as first diagnostic test for CARVs may delayed the start of antiviral therapy in a significant number of influenza and RSV cases. • Syndromic multiplex RT-PCR-based prospective clinical CARV survey in allo-HCT recipients translates into a lower mortality rate as compared to standard clinical practice based on RSV and influenza virus rapid detection test. • We found that donor/recipient HLA mismatch, CARV LRTD and high-risk ISI were also associated with higher mortality.

Factors predicting continence recovery 1 month after radical prostatectomy: Results of a multicenter survey
2011
Objectives: To assess the factors associated with continence recovery 1month after radical prostatectomy (RP) and to identify the correlation between these factors. Methods: In total, 2408 men treated with RP for prostate cancer (PCa) were enrolled in the present multicenter prospective study. Clinical (age, body mass index) and urological (catheterization or transurethral resection of the prostate) records, quality of life (QOL) scores determined using various instruments (including the International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF] and University of California Los Angeles, Prostate Cancer Index [UCLA-PCI]), PCa characteristics (clinical stage [cT], prostate-specific antigen, biopsy Gleas…
Proximal contact alterations between implant-supported restorations and adjacent teeth in the posterior region: A 3-month prospective study
2021
Background Interproximal contact loss (ICL) is a multifactorial implant complication. The aims of this prospective clinical study were to evaluate proximal contact alterations between implant-supported fixed prostheses (IFPs) and adjacent teeth and to identify potential contributing factors. Material and Methods This study was conducted from April to September 2019 at the Department of Prosthodontics. Forty-three patients (23 females and 20 males, age range 31-70) treated with 43 posterior IFPs were recruited for this study. All proximal contacts (64) were checked visually and radiographically. Proximal contact tightness (PCT) was clinically evaluated using dental floss and measured during …
