STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of postoperative results with a minimum follow-up of 6 months, maximum of two years and a mean of 14 months. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, ‘La Fe’ University Hospital, Department of Surgery of Valencia School of Medicine, Valencia, Spain. PATIENTS: Ninety eyes of 70 patients presenting high myopia who underwent anterior chamber phakic lens implantation with iris fixation IOLs in the last two years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Non-contact specular microscopy with video image system was used to perform examination of the corneal e…

<p>A randomized multicenter study comparing seawater washes and carmellose artificial tears eyedrops in the treatment of dry eye syndrome</p…

2019

Purpose To investigate the safety and efficacy of sterile isotonic seawater washes vs standard treatment with carmellose artificial tears in dry eye syndrome (DES). Patients and methods This is a randomized multicenter prospective study with 12 weeks of follow-up. A group of patients with DES (N=60) were treated with seawater spray (Quinton®) five times daily, and another similar group (N=60) were treated with carmellose artificial tears eyedrops (Viscofresh® 0.5%) five times a day. The parameters studied and measured were as follows: Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire score, Schirmer I test (without anesthesia) score, tear osmolarity (TearLab®), tear breakup time, tear meniscus hei…

Feasibility and Acceptability of Office-Based Polypectomy With a 16F Mini-Resectoscope: A Multicenter Clinical Study

2016

Abstract Study Objective To investigate the feasibility and acceptability of office hysteroscopic polypectomy using a novel continuous-flow operative 16F mini-resectoscope. Design Multicenter prospective case series (Canadian Task Force classification III). Setting “SS Antonio e Biagio” Hospital, Alessandria, and University “Federico II” of Naples. Patients One hundred eighty-two patients with endometrial polyps. Interventions Hysteroscopic polypectomy performed with 16F mini-resectoscope in an office setting, without analgesia and/or anesthesia. Measurements and Main Results Polypectomy was successfully performed in 175 patients in a single surgical step (96.15%), with only 1 patient (.54%…

Grenzen der Indikation zur Intensivtherapie bei chirurgischen Patienten — Prospektive Untersuchung zur Bedeutung von Scores (APACHE II, HIS, TISS) un…

1993

The aim of the study was to describe the objective factors (clinical values, scores, basic and concomitant illnesses) that could possibly justify the omittance of intensive therapy. In a prospective study in 169 postoperative intensive therapy patients, it was shown that scores (APACHE II, HIS, TISS) serum-lactate and serum creatinine were significant prognostic parameters for lethal outcome, while these parameters had no effect on the prognosis after patients were discharged. Primarily, the presence of a malignant disease and/or the age of the patient were decisive. By considering these factors for lethal outcome and long-term prognosis, it is possible to identify patients who do not benef…

Blood alcohol concentration for monitoring ethanol treatment to prevent alcohol withdrawal in the intensive care unit.

2001

Abstract Objective. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a serious complication during postoperative treatment in chronic alcoholics. Despite prophylactic treatment, AWS occurs in at least 25% of these patients after elective surgery. An established protocol for the prevention of AWS is ethanol administration. The aim of this study was to evaluate possible differences in ethanol dose and levels between successfully treated patients and those who developed AWS. Design. Prospective, observational study with retrospective post hoc analysis. Setting. Intensive care unit (ICU). Patients. Thirty-two alcohol-dependent patients undergoing elective or emergency surgery after trauma with postoperativ…

HLA-DQ: Celiac diseasevsinflammatory bowel disease

2018

Aim To determine the genetic predisposition to celiac disease (CeD) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients by quantifying the frequency of CeD-related human leucocyte antigen (HLA) (HLA-CeD: HLA-DQ2 and -DQ8) in IBD patients globally, by type of IBD and gender, and by calculating the protective/risk contribution of these haplotypes in the development of the IBD disease. Methods We conducted a prospective study with IBD patients from our Unit. Clinical information was gathered and blood was tested for HLA-CeD. The control group was made up of unrelated Valencian organ donors. Results 1034 subjects were analyzed: 457 IBD [207 ulcerative coliti (UC) and 250 Crohn's disease (CD)] patients…

Efficacy and safety of endoscopic balloon dilation of symptomatic intestinal Crohn's disease strictures

2011

Abstract Aim To evaluate prospectively the clinical efficacy and safety of endoscopic hydrostatic balloon dilation in a consecutive cohort of symptomatic intestinal Crohn's disease strictures. Methods Between September 2003 and December 2008 we performed endoscopic balloon dilations in 37 Crohn's disease patients with 39 intestinal symptomatic strictures (4 naive and 35 postoperative). Dilations were performed using a Rigiflex through-the-scope balloon. Clinical success rate was claimed if a patient remained asymptomatic and did not require surgery or further endoscopic dilation, following technical success. Actuarial curves of clinical, endoscopic (redilation) and surgical recurrence were …

Non-invasive diagnosis and grading of postsurgical endoscopic recurrence in Crohn's disease

2010

Abstract Non-invasive techniques aim to be an alternative to endoscopy in the assessment of postsurgical recurrence of Crohn's disease (CD). The object of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography (AUS) and 99m Tc-hexamethylpropylene amineoxime ( 99m Tc-HMPAO)-labelled leucocyte scintigraphy (LLS) compared with endoscopy in the diagnosis and grading of postsurgical recurrence of CD. Between January 2006 and May 2007, all patients with CD and resection with ileocolic anastomosis were included prospectively. Within three days they underwent an ileocolonoscopy, AUS with evaluation of bowel wall thickness and the presence of Doppler flow, and LLS. Forty patients who m…

Apoptotic effect as biomarker of disease, severity and follow-up in interstitial cystitis

2018

Objective: To determine whether the apoptotic effect test could serve as a biomarker of severity in bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis. Material and methods: A prospective study was conducted between January 2010 and January 2015, which included 57 patients diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and 49 diagnosed with chronic pelvic pain of gynaecological origin. The urine was exposed to cell cultures, and the urine's capacity for inducing apoptosis in the cultures was analysed. A statistical analysis was then conducted to assess whether the apoptotic effect was associated with the symptoms. Results: After performing an analysis of the association between the degree of apoptotic effec…
