Collagen copolymer posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens supported by the ciliary sulcus to treat myopia: One-year follow-up

2014

Purpose To evaluate the predictability, stability, safety, and efficacy of Visian V4b Implantable Collamer Lens phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation to treat varying degrees of myopia. Setting Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Design Prospective nonrandomized clinical study. Methods The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, refraction, pIOL vault, and adverse effects were evaluated 12 months postoperatively. Results The study enrolled 121 eyes (68 patients). The mean spherical equivalent decreased from −8.61 diopters (D) ± 3.41 (SD) (range −18.75 to −2.25 D) preoperatively to −0.18 ± 0.29 D (range −1.25 to 0.50 D) 12 months postoper…

Soft tissue cell adhesion to titanium abutments after different cleaning procedures: preliminary results of a randomized clinical trial

2013

Objectives: A randomized controlled trial was performed to assess soft tissue cell adhesion to implant titanium abutments subjected to different cleaning procedures and test if plasma cleaning can enhance cell adhesion at an early healing time. Study Design: Eighteen patients with osseointegrated and submerged implants were included. Before re-opening, 18 abutments were divided in 3 groups corresponding to different clinical conditions with different cleaning processes: no treatment (G1), laboratory customization and cleaning by steam (G2), cleaning by plasma of Argon (G3). Abutments were removed after 1 week and scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze cell adhesion to the abutment…

Polysomnography and ApneaGraph in patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.

2007

<i>Purpose:</i> To evaluate whether ApneaGraph (AG) and polysomnography (PSG) deliver comparable results in patients with sleep-related breathing disorders. <i>Procedures:</i> A prospective study was performed, which included 14 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), hypopnea index (HI), apnea index (AI), obstructive, central and mixed apnea, oxygen saturation (SaO2), pulse and body position were simultaneously assessed by PSG and AG in each individual. <i>Results:</i> There was a good correlation between measurements of AG and PSG for AHI, pulse, SaO2, body position and ce…

Associations of partnering transition and socioeconomic status with a four-year change in daily steps among Finnish adults.

2018

Aim: The aim of this prospective four-year follow-up study was to examine how socioeconomic status (SES) and change in marital status are associated with the change in pedometer-measured physical activity (PA) in adulthood among participants in the ‘Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study’. Methods: Questionnaires were completed and pedometers worn at baseline in 2007 and again at follow-up in 2011 by 1051 Finnish adults (62.3% female, aged 30–45 years in 2007). A latent change score model was used to examine mean change in daily total steps, aerobic steps and non-aerobic steps during weekdays and weekend days between 2007 and 2011. Results: In women re-coupling or finding a new partner wa…

The role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in the management of iatrogenic bile duct injury after cholecystectomy

2019

Duration of active psychosis and functional outcomes in first-episode non-affective psychosis.

2018

AbstractBackground:The duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) has been associated with negative outcomes in psychosis; however, few studies have focused on the duration of active psychotic symptoms after commencing treatment (DAT). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of DUP and DAT on functional long-term outcomes (3 years) in patients with early psychosis. Methods:We evaluated the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS) at frequent intervals for 3 years after presentation to determine the DAT for 307 individuals with first-episode psychosis together with DUP and clinical variables. The functional outcomes were assessed using the Disability Assessment Scale (DAS) at th…

Diabetes mellitus prevalence and control in sleep-disordered breathing: The European Sleep Apnea Cohort (ESADA) study

2014

BACKGROUND: OSA is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity. A driver of this is metabolic dysfunction and in particular type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Prior studies identifying a link between OSA and T2DM have excluded subjects with undiagnosed T2DM, and there is a lack of population-level data on the interaction between OSA and glycemic control among patients with diabetes. We assessed the relationship between OSA severity and T2DM prevalence and control in a large multinational population.METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 6,616 participants in the European Sleep Apnea Cohort (ESADA) study, using multivariate regression analysis to assess T2DM prev…

Monitoring changes in anti-tuberculosis treatment: associated factors determined at the time of diagnosis

2013

OBJECTIVES: To determine predictive factors for changes in standard anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy at the time of diagnosis. METHODS: A prospective study was performed among tuberculosis (TB) patients treated at specialised centres during 2008-2009. Treatment outcome was monitored per standard guidelines. Treatment was considered successful if the patient was cured or completed treatment. Factors associated with treatment modification were analysed at the bivariate and multivariate levels using logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 427 patients were included in the study. The initial standard treatment regimen was retained for 249 patients (58.3%), extended to 9 months for 36 (8.4%) and …
