The formation of the molluscan shell nacre is regulated to a large extent by a matrix of extracellular macromolecules that are secreted by the shell-forming tissue, the mantle. This so-called ‘calcifying matrix’ is a complex mixture of proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides that is assembled and occluded within the mineral phase during the calcification process. Better molecular-level characterization of the substances that regulate nacre formation is still required. Echinostomes: genomics and proteomics

Echinostomes are excellent models to study host-parasite interactions in intestinal helminthiases. In this chapter, data available from genomic and proteomic studies are analyzed in detail to indicate advantages and pitfalls in the research using these organisms. The lack of a genome sequence project and the low number of sequences deposited in the databases not only affect the genomic studies but also debilitate proteomic findings since in most cases, although good spectrometric data can be obtained, the available database often fail to identify the protein from the peptides obtained.

Studying the interplay between sulfur nutrition and water stress tolerance in pea by proteomics : a focus on seed development and composition
