Cognitive Biases in Pathological Health Anxiety
2016
Pathological health anxiety refers to the medically unfounded fear of suffering from a severe illness. Differences in cognitive processes related to attention, memory, and evaluation of health threat have been hypothesized to underlie pathological health anxiety. In no study, however, have researchers systematically and simultaneously assessed different cognitive biases. On the basis of the idea that multiple cognitive biases simultaneously contribute to psychopathology (the combined-cognitive-bias hypothesis), we compared 88 patients with pathological health anxiety, 52 patients with depressive disorder, and 52 healthy participants on their performance in several cognitive tasks involving…
Primer on the Contribution of Crime Scene Behavior to the Forensic Assessment of Sexual Offenders
2018
Abstract. Over the last decades several attempts in developing incrementally valid risk indicators above and beyond standard actuarial and dynamic risk assessment instruments have been undertaken without much success. The current review will summarize current developments regarding the validity of detailed crime scene analysis for forensic assessments of sexual offenders. To this end, this overview will focus on two issues: First, we will discuss the issue of sexual offender risk assessment based on crime scene information. Second, we will outline how crime scene behavior contributes to the assessment of sexual interest in children. In each section we will introduce the reader to new appro…
Bipolar disorders and Rorschach: State of the art
2010
International audience; This article is a review of the literature concerning the use of the Rorschach test in the context of bipolar disorders. Even though the first research dates back to the origin of the test, very few studies have been conducted so far. The known research mostly concerns: the description of the psychological functioning of bipolar patients throughout the different phases of the illness, the comparison with other psychopathological designs in order to set up a differential diagnosis (unipolar disorders, schizophrenic disorders, schizoaffective disorders) and to seek endophenotypes. This article aims at summarizing the findings of these studies and at discussing their me…

To achieve a sense of rightness: The joint role of Not Just Right Experiences and Intolerance of Uncertainty in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
2021
Abstract Background/Objective Not Just Right Experiences (NJREs) are currently considered as one of the motivators of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but the ways through which NJREs affect OCD symptoms remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the putative mediational role of Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) in the association between NJRE severity and OCD symptoms in patients with OCD. Method Sixty-two patients with OCD completed self-report measures of NJREs, OCD symptoms, and IU. Results IU mediated the relationship between NJRE severity and OCD symptoms. Furthermore, NJRE severity emerged as moderator of the path, suggesting that the mediational role of IU is str…
Suggestions for revised scoring of the Tower of Hanoi test
2000
Detailed time and error analyses of the Tower of Hanoi (TOH) test was performed using four repeated assessments of eight children (ages 9-12 years), who had perceptual and problem solving deficits. The time before each move was measured. In addition to the traditionally counted time scores, new, relative time scores were computed in order to separate the planning time from the general reaction speed. New error scores were defined and sum scores of serious errors (perserative moves, illegal moves, and wrong results) and mild errors (self-corrected moves, almost performed moves, and interrupted trials) were computed. The relative planning time correlated positively with the achieved score, a…
Factors associated with the anxious symptomatology in a sample of university students
2018
BACKGROUND: The university period may represent a moment in which the mental well-being of students is subjected to stress with relative predisposition to the development of diseases related to mood disorders. The aim of the study was to measure the severity of anxious symptoms within the student population of the University of Palermo. METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire was provided to students enrolled in the mailing list of the Regional Agency for the Right to University Study of the University of Palermo. The first section investigated demographic and social data, while in the second section the B.A.I. (Beck Anxiety Inventory) test was administered. RESULTS: The sample consists …
Sensory and affective components of symptom perception: A psychometric approach
2018
Psychological accounts of symptom perception put forward that symptom experiences consist of sensory-perceptual and affective-motivational components. This division is also suggested by psychometric studies investigating the latent structure of symptom reporting. To corroborate the view that the general and symptom-specific factors of a bifactor model represent affective and sensory components, respectively, we performed bifactor models applying confirmatory factor analytic approaches to the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 and the Checklist for Symptoms in Daily Life completed by 1053 undergraduate students. Additionally, we explored the association of latent factors with negative affectivi…
