Trench-parallel spreading ridge subduction and its consequences for the geological evolution of the overriding plate: Insights from analogue models a…
2018
A series of 3-D asthenospheric-scale analogue models have been conducted in the laboratory in order to simulate the arrival of a spreading ridge at the trench and understand its effect on plate kinematics, slab geometry, and on the deformation of the overriding plate. These models are made of a two-layered linearly viscous system simulating the lithosphere and asthenosphere. We reproduce the progressive decrease in thickness of the oceanic lithosphere at the trench. We measure plate kinematics, slab geometry and upper plate deformation. Our experiments reveal that the subduction of a thinning plate beneath a freely moving overriding continent favors a decrease of the subduction velocity and…
POPULATION STRUCTURE OF ANISAKIS SIMPLEX (NEMATODA) IN HARBOR PORPOISES PHOCOENA PHOCOENA OFF DENMARK
2004
The population structure and habitat selection of Anisakis simplex in 35 harbor porpoises off Denmark are described. The nematodes were collected from the stomach and duodenal ampulla and were categorized as third-stage larvae, fourth-stage larvae, subadults, and adults. The porpoises harbored 8,043 specimens of A. simplex. The proportion of adults and subadults increased with infrapopulation size. The number of development stages across infrapopulations covaried significantly (Kendall's test of concordance). Concordance was higher in hosts with the highest intensities than in those with low and medium intensities. All stages occurred mainly in the forestomach, but this trend was stronger f…
Endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation in patients with large biliary stones and periampullary diverticula: Results of a multicentric series.
2018
Abstract Introduction Stone extraction represents the most frequent indication for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation (EPLBD) is a recent introduced approach consisting of an endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation following limited endoscopic sphyncterotomy (ES), which has been proven to be safe and effective for extraction of large common bile duct (CBD) stones. Peri-ampullary diverticula (PAD) are described in 10–20% of patients undergoing ERCP. Aim of our study is to evaluate efficacy and safety of EPLBD for the extraction of large biliary stones in patients with PAD. Methods The prospectively collected endoscopy databa…
Percutaneous antegrade electropapillotomy. Study in dogs.
1984
Antegrade electropapillotomy using the percutaneous transcystic approach was successfully performed in 11 of 16 dogs. When the intervention was effective, the pressure gradient between common bile duct and duodenum decreased from 6 to 1.3 mm Hg on average and returned to gradients slightly below the initial values after 4 weeks, owing to reactivation of the sphincter mechanism. Ineffective cutting, however, resulted in a temporary pressure rise. In one dog a papillary stenosis developed and was relieved by antegrade electrocutting. Irrespective of the success of the papillotomy, rises in levels of serum glutamine oxaloacetic and pyruvic transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, serum amylase and …
Chemoradioimmunotherapy with 5-fluorouracil, cisplatin and interferon-α in pancreatic and periampullary cancer: Results of a feasibility study
2008
Abstract Background Recent studies give rise to the hypothesis, that adjuvant chemoradioimmunotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), cisplatin and interferon-α (IFN-α) might be a possible new treatment of pancreatic cancer in resected patients. We report the up-to-now experience at our institution. Patients and methods Eleven patients with histological diagnosis of localized carcinoma of the pancreas ( n = 7) or periampullary ( n = 4) were prospectively analyzed. Four patients were deemed unresectable because of local invasion of adjacent organs (neoadjuvant setting) and seven patients underwent curative resection (adjuvant setting). Eight patients were classified as T3 carcinomas and three …
The little finger ulnar palmar digital artery perforator flap: anatomical basis.
2013
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the cutaneous vascularization of the hypothenar region and investigate the anatomical basis for perforator propeller flaps for coverage of the flexor aspect of the little finger. METHODS: The area between the pisiform and the base of the little finger was studied in 14 hands of fresh cadavers injected with red latex. An oval flap 1.5 cm large was raised along the axis between these two points. Perforators going into the flap were dissected up to their origin from the ulnar palmar digital artery of the little finger, and their distance from the proximal edge of the A1 pulley was recorded. RESULTS: The mean number of perforator arteries entering t…
Risk factors for extrahepatic biliary tract carcinoma in men: medical conditions and lifestyle: results from a European multicentre case-control stud…
2007
OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors of carcinoma of the extrahepatic biliary tract in men. METHODS: Newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed patients, 35-70 years old, were interviewed between 1995 and 1997 in Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany and Italy. Population controls were frequency-matched by age and region. Adjusted odds ratios and 95%-confidence intervals were estimated by logistic regression. RESULTS: The analysis included 153 patients and 1421 controls. The participation proportion was 71% for patients and 61% for controls. Gallstone disease was corroborated as a risk factor for extrahepatic biliary tract carcinoma in men (odds ratio 2.49; 95% confidence interval 1.32-4.70), …
Competitive (versus Loyal) Showrooming: An Application of the Push-Pull-Mooring Framework
2021
Abstract Showrooming is an increasingly popular practic that threatens retailers' performance. This paper adopts the push-pull-mooring framework to understand the shopper decision to purchase online from a different retailer (competitive showrooming) rather than from the same retailer visited to gather information (loyal showrooming). Going beyond the customer motivation to get the best value, we focus on retailer-situational variables (store crowding and quality of salesperson service) and retailer-relational variables (customer satisfaction, trust and loyalty) in the decision on competitive (vs loyal) showrooming. Data was collected via a survey answered by 659 showroomers and analysed us…
Predictors of tourist engagement: Travel motives and tourism destination profiles
2020
Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of travel motives and regional tourism destinations on positive/negative engagement with a destination management organisation (DMO). According to previous literature, travel motives were classified as push and pull motives, and regional tourism destinations were classified by tourist demand behaviour. To achieve the objective, the totality of posts about regional tourism destinations published on the Brand Spain's Official Facebook Fanpage during a year were analysed (418), along with audience reactions (127,750), comments (3219) and shares to such posts. A content analysis was performed, with a regression analysis (optimal sca…
A Theoretical Approach to the Shift Mechanics of Rubber Belt Variators
2008
This paper proposes a theoretical description of the mechanical behavior of rubber belt variators during the speed ratio shift. Comparing with the steady operation, the mass conservation of the belt is completely reformulated considering an elementary dihedral control volume between two planes through the pulley axis and balancing the inside mass variation with the total mass flux through the control surface. On the other hand, the belt equilibrium conditions are similar to the steady case, as the inertia forces due to the shifting motion are negligible with respect to the other forces. Assuming a one-dimensional belt model, it is shown that adhesive regions may appear inside the arc of con…
