Cost analysis of target-controlled infusion-based anesthesia compared with standard anesthesia regimens.

2000

UNLABELLED With the development of new computer-assisted target-controlled infusion (TCI) systems and the availability of short-acting anesthetics, total IV anesthesia (TIVA) has become increasingly popular. The aim of this study was to compare costs of TCI-based anesthesia with two standard anesthesia regimens. Sixty patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomly divided into three groups. Group 1 (TIVA/TCI) received TIVA using a propofol-based TCI system and continuous administration of remifentanil; Group 2 (isoflurane) underwent inhaled anesthesia with isoflurane, fentanyl, and N2O; Group 3 (standard propofol) received fentanyl and N2O and a continuous infusion …

Comment on Umpierrez and Klonoff. Diabetes Technology Update: Use of Insulin Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitoring in the Hospital. Diabetes Care 2…

2019

We applaud Umpierrez and Klonoff (1) for reviewing the evidence on the application of insulin pump therapy (continuous subcutaneous glucose infusion [CSII]) and continuous glucose monitoring in inpatient settings. However, we missed a dedicated section about the patients’ perspective and experiences concerning insulin pump use in hospitals. In a qualitative survey conducted in Germany, elderly patients with type 1 diabetes (≥65 years, n = 136) and health care professionals (HCP, n = 96) were asked about their wishes, concerns, and needs related to CSII (2). The 290 responses (165 patients; 125 HCPs) were classified into three categories. First were positive experiences (patients n = 17; HCP…

Adopting magnetocaloric heat pumping and refrigeration for electrical vehicle

2017

International audience; Refrigeration process is based on conventional gas compression and expansion techniques. However, this technique has numerous disadvantages since it generates greenhouse gas and is partly responsible for global warming. This paper exposes analternative method: magnetocaloric refrigeration that presents the advantage to combine high-energy efficiency and respect of theenvironment. Magnetic heat pumping and cooling is compared to conventional method applied on vehicle air conditioning system.Simulation results are used to demonstrate the approach.

Er-doped photonic crystal fibre characterization method based on McCumber theory

2009

Characterization and modeling of Er-doped fibres [1] allowed in the past years fruitful developments of amplifiers and lasers. Since in a conventional fibre monomodal propagation of light is achieved in a very short length (once energy of other modes has been radiated) the cutback technique has been successfully used to determine absorption cross sections at the pump and gain band wavelengths. Emission cross sections have been usually determined instead from the measurement of gain or amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectrum together with the use of theoretical models. In a photonic crystal fibre (PCF) the limited size of the air-holes lattice originates energy radiation from the highe…

Requirement for the Proton-Pumping NADH Dehydrogenase I of Escherichia Coli in Respiration of NADH to Fumarate and Its Bioenergetic Implications

1997

In Escherichia coli the expression of the nuo genes encoding the proton pumping NADH dehydrogenase I is stimulated by the presence of fumarate during anaerobic respiration. The regulatory sites required for the induction by fumarate, nitrate and O2 are located at positions around –309, –277, and downstream of –231 bp, respectively, relative to the transcriptional-start site. The fumarate regulator has to be different from the O2 and nitrate regulators ArcA and NarL. For growth by fumarate respiration, the presence of NADH dehydrogenase I was essential, in contrast to aerobic or nitrate respiration which used preferentially NADH dehydrogenase II. The electron transport from NADH to fumarate …

Counterdiabatic vortex pump in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

2017

Topological phase imprinting is a well-established technique for deterministic vortex creation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali metal atoms. It was recently shown that counter-diabatic quantum control may accelerate vortex creation in comparison to the standard adiabatic protocol and suppress the atom loss due to nonadiabatic transitions. Here we apply this technique, assisted by an optical plug, for vortex pumping to theoretically show that sequential phase imprinting up to 20 cycles generates a vortex with a very large winding number. Our method significantly increases the fidelity of the pump for rapid pumping compared to the case without the counter-diabatic control, leadin…

Treatment of isolated ascending aortic aneurysm by off-pump epiaortic wrapping is safe and durable.

2016

OBJECTIVES: Isolated ascending aortic aneurysm (iAA) is usually treated by open graft repair requiring sternotomy, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and cardioplegia. This approach carries significant mortality in older patients or those presenting with comorbidities. We report an original series of patients presenting with iAA and treated with epiaortic wrapping by using a synthetic mesh. This less invasive aortic repair technique allows reducing the aortic diameter to a predefined value and is performed without CPB. METHODS: Data from patients presenting with an iAA and treated with the wrapping technique (WT) by polypropylene/polyester mesh from November 2006 to July 2015 were collected. The …

Monitoring results and analysis of thermal comfort conditions in experimental buildings for different heating systems and ventilation regimes during …

2017

This paper focuses on the long-term monitoring of thermal comfort and discomfort parameters in five small test buildings equipped with different heating and cooling systems. Calculations of predicted percentage of dissatisfied people (PPD) index and discomfort factors are provided for the room in winter season running three different heating systems – electric heater, air-air heat pump and air-water heat pump, as well as for the summer cooling with split type air conditioning systems. It is shown that the type of heating/cooling system and its working regime has an important impact on thermal comfort conditions in observed room. Recommendations for the optimal operating regimes and choice o…

Pumps as turbines (PATs) in water distribution networks affected by intermittent service

2013

A hydraulic model was developed in order to evaluate the potential energy recovery from the use of centrifugal pumps as turbines (PATs) in a water distribution network characterized by the presence of private tanks. The model integrates the Global Gradient Algorithm (GGA), with a pressure-driven model that permits a more realistic representation of the influence on the network behaviour of the private tanks filling and emptying. The model was applied to a real case study: a District Metered Area in Palermo (Italy). Three different scenarios were analysed and compared with a baseline scenario (Scenario 0 – no PAT installed) to identify the system configuration with added PATs that permits th…

A Self-Contained Electro-Hydraulic Cylinder: Modeling, Control Design, Simulation and Experimental Validation

2018

Master's thesis Mechatronics MAS500 - University of Agder 2018 In the constant effort to improve the efficiency of hydraulic systems, the pressure drop over hydraulic valves has been one of the major obstacles. In the Self-Contained Electro-Hydraulic Cylinder, the directional valve and the hydraulic power unit have been replaced by a bi-directional axial piston pump and a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor. Actuation of the cylinder is performed by controlling the direction of rotation and the velocity of the motor. Originally the purpose of this project was to: "Design a proper control algorithm for an existing novel selfcontained electro-hydraulic cylinder, implement it on the main boom o…
