2007

Dietary indicaxanthin from cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica L. Mill) fruit prevents eryptosis induced by oxysterols in a hypercholesterolaemia-relev…

2015

Toxic oxysterols in a hypercholesterolaemia-relevant proportion cause suicidal death of human erythrocytes or eryptosis. This process proceeds through early production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), release of prostaglandin (PGE2) and opening of PGE2-dependent Ca channels, membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) externalisation, and cell shrinkage. The present study was the first to reveal that a bioavailable phytochemical, indicaxanthin (Ind) from cactus pear fruit, in a concentration range (1·0–5·0 μM) consistent with its plasma level after a fruit meal, prevents PS externalisation and cell shrinkage in a dose-dependent manner when incubated with isolated healthy human erythrocytes exposed to…

Morphology of the male and female tergal glands of the woodroach Cryptocercus punctulatus (Insecta, Dictyoptera)

1989

Males and females of Cryptocercus punctulatus possess tergal glands which differ in position, size, morphology, and chemical composition of their secretions. Ultrastructural studies reveal the presence of class 1 and class 3 glandular units interspersed throughout the glands; class 3 glandular units are 30 times as numerous as in the female, but no cytological difference was found between the sexes. The morphology of the tergal glands is characterized by the occurrence of a subcuticular space reservoir, a dense tracheal system, and a thick collagenous layer instead of the typical basement membrane. Comparison with the termite abdominal gland system indicates a great similarity in the fine s…

Licensed and Unlicensed Spectrum Management for Energy-Efficient Cognitive M2M

2020

Edge computing has emerged as a promising solution for relieving the tension between resource-limited MTDs and computational-intensive tasks. To realize successful task offloading with limited spectrum, we focus on the cognitive machine-to-machine (CM2M) paradigm which enables a massive number of MTDs to either opportunistically use the licensed spectrum that is temporarily available, or to exploit the under-utilized unlicensed spectrum. We formulate the channel selection problem with both licensed and unlicensed spectrum as an adversarial multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem, and combine the exponential-weight algorithm for exploration and exploitation (EXP3) and Lyapunov optimization to devel…

Phylogenomic analyses unravel annelid evolution

2011

Annelida, the ringed worms, is a highly diverse animal phylum that includes more than 15,000 described species and constitutes the dominant benthic macrofauna from the intertidal zone down to the deep sea. A robust annelid phylogeny would shape our understanding of animal body-plan evolution and shed light on the bilaterian ground pattern. Traditionally, Annelida has been split into two major groups: Clitellata (earthworms and leeches) and polychaetes (bristle worms), but recent evidence suggests that other taxa that were once considered to be separate phyla (Sipuncula, Echiura and Siboglinidae (also known as Pogonophora)) should be included in Annelida(1-4). However, the deep-level evoluti…

Personality and reinforcement: An exploration using a maze-learning task

1995

A computerized maze learning task was investigated under control, reward and punishment, provided by differing financial reinforcement contingencies. The relationships between speed crossing the maze and anxiety and impulsivity personality traits were explored. Anxiety is hypothesized to reflect a behavioural inhibition system active in punishing environments; and impulsivity, to reflect an activation system active in rewarding environments. Of the measures of impulsivity taken, only one—venturesomeness from the I7—was associated significantly with increased maze crossing speed; this was found particularly in the reward condition and in males. Several anxiety variables were associated with …

On differences and similarities in the analysis of Lorenz, Chen, and Lu systems

2015

Currently it is being actively discussed the question of the equivalence of various Lorenz-like systems and the possibility of universal consideration of their behavior (Algaba et al., 2013a,b, 2014b,c; Chen, 2013; Chen and Yang, 2013; Leonov, 2013a), in view of the possibility of reduction of such systems to the same form with the help of various transformations. In the present paper the differences and similarities in the analysis of the Lorenz, the Chen and the Lu systems are discussed. It is shown that the Chen and the Lu systems stimulate the development of new methods for the analysis of chaotic systems. Open problems are discussed.

El valor educativo de la interioridad. Un enfoque desde Charles Taylor

2010
