First observation of high-K isomeric states in $$^{249}$$Md and $$^{251}$$Md

2021

Decay spectroscopy of the odd-proton nuclei $^{249}$Md and $^{251}$Md has been performed. High-K isomeric states were identified for the first time in these two nuclei through the measurement of their electromagnetic decay. An isomeric state with a half-life of 2.8(5) ms and an excitation energy $\ge 910$ keV was found in $^{249}$Md. In $^{251}$Md, an isomeric state with a half-life of 1.4(3) s and an excitation energy $\ge 844$ keV was found. Similarly to the neighbouring $^{255}$Lr, these two isomeric states are interpreted as 3 quasi-particle high-K states and compared to new theoretical calculations. Excited nuclear configurations were calculated within two scenarios: via blocking nucle…

New β-decaying state in 214Bi

2021

A new β-decaying state in 214Bi has been identified at the ISOLDE Decay Station at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. A preferred Iπ = (8−) assignment was suggested for this state based on the β-decay feeding pattern to levels in 214Po and shell-model calculations. The half-life of the Iπ = (8−) state was deduced to be T1/2 = 9.39(10) min. The deexcitation of the levels populated in 214Po by the β decay of this state was investigated via γ -γ coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions was identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in 214Bi and 214Po were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. Both ca…

Search for periodic modulations of the rate of double-β decay of Mo100 in the NEMO-3 detector

2021

Double-beta decays of 100Mo from the 6.0195-year exposure of a 6.914 kg high-purity sample were recorded by the NEMO-3 experiment that searched for neutrinoless double-beta decays. These ultrarare transitions to 100Ru have a half-life of approximately 7×1018 years and have been used to conduct the first-ever search for periodic variations of this decay mode. The Lomb-Scargle periodogram technique, and its error-weighted extension, were employed to look for periodic modulations of the half-life. Data show no evidence at the 95% confidence level of modulations with amplitude greater than 2.5% in the frequency range of 0.33225yr−1 to 360yr−1. peerReviewed

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes ¹⁹³,¹⁹⁵Bi

2015

Two experiments aiming to study the shape coexistence and competing structures in 193Bi and 195Bi isotopes have been performed at the Accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyv askyl a, Finland (JYFL). Many new states have been found, hugely extending the previously known level schemes for both isotopes. The i13=2 bands were extended up to I = 45/2+ in both the 193;195Bi isotopes. In case of 193Bi, the I = 31/2+ member of the i13=2 band was found to de-excite also to a long-lived isomeric state. This link determines the energy of the isomeric state to be 2350(1) keV and suggests a spin and parity of 29/2+. The half-life of the isomeric state was measured to be 85(3) s. A level structur…

γ decay of excited states in 198Rn identified using correlated radioactive decay

1999

The low-lying level structure of the neutron-deficient isotope 198Rn has been studied for the first time, using the 166Er(36Ar,4n) reaction at a beam energy of 175 MeV. Evaporation residues were selected using an in-flight gas-filled separator, RITU, and implanted at the focal plane into a 16-element position-sensitive, passivated ion-implanted planar silicon detector. Prompt γ rays in 198Rn were observed at the target position using the JUROSPHERE array of 24 Compton-suppressed germanium detectors, and were identified by the subsequent radioactive decay of associated recoiling ions in the silicon detector. Isotopic assignments of the nuclei produced were made on the basis of the energy and…

Constraints on partial half-lives of 136Ce and 138Ce double electron captures

2022

The γ-ray emissions from a radiopure cerium-bromide crystal with a mass of 4381 g were measured for a total of 497.4 d by means of high-resolution γ-ray spectrometry in the HADES underground laboratory at a depth of 500 m.w.e. A search for 0/2νεε and 0/2νεβ+ double beta decay transitions of 136Ce and 138Ce was performed using Bayesian analysis techniques. No signals were observed for a total of 35 investigated decay modes. 90% credibility limits were set in the order of 1018–1019 yr. Existing constraints from a cerium oxide powder measurement were tested with a different cerium compound and half-life limits could be improved for most of the decay modes. The most likely accessible decay mode…
