Reading ability with 3 multifocal intraocular lens models.

2006

Purpose To prospectively evaluate reading performance with of 3 types of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) under different lighting conditions based on reading acuity and reading speed tests. Setting Augenklinik, Bad Hersfeld, Germany. Methods This randomized study comprised 60 cataract patients (120 eyes) randomly assigned to receive an SA40N IOL (AMO) (Group 1, 20 patients), Tecnis ZM001 IOL (AMO) (Group 2, 20 patients), or AcrySof ReSTOR SA60D3 IOL (Alcon) (Group 3, 20 patients). Pupil size and reading ability at near (visual acuity, reading speed) without correction, with best distance correction, and with best near correction were assessed 6 weeks postoperatively under low-light con…

Association of Birth Weight with Central and Peripheral Corneal Thickness in Adulthood-Results from the Population-Based German Gutenberg Health Stud…

2021

Low birth weight (BW) is associated with altered ocular geometry such as a steeper corneal shape in adulthood. However, it is unclear whether low birth weight affects corneal thickness development in the center or periphery in adulthood which may contribute to ocular disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate corneal thickness in former low birth weight individuals in adulthood. Methods: The German Gutenberg Health Study is a prospective, population-based study in which every participant (age range 40–80 years) was measured with Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam HR, Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany). BW was collected by self-reports. The relationship between birth weight and…

Brimonidine versus dapiprazole: Influence on pupil size at various illumination levels.

2005

To evaluate the influence of dapiprazole versus brimonidine on pupil size at various illumination levels.Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. In randomized prospective study, 19 healthy volunteers received 2 ophthalmic solutions, dapiprazole and brimonidine, 1 in each eye, for intraindividual comparison. Before and after application, pupil diameter was measured using an infrared binocular pupillometer at 3 illumination levels (0.03, 0.82, and 6.4 lux).Only slight pupil dilation was observed under scotopic conditions after application of both agents. After 20 minutes, the median reduction in pupil width was 1.4 mm for brimonidine and 0.9 mm for dapiprazo…

The pupillary response to mental overload

1977

The hypothesis that the pupil constricts below base level in situations of mental overload was tested. Subjects had to perform in a four-alternative forced-choice task at 75%, 100%, and 125% the speed of their maximum processing capacity. No indication of a pupillary constriction in the overload situation was found. The pupil dilated under all three conditions. The pupil diameter of male subjects significantly decreased after the sharp increase at the beginning of the experimental phases, while the female subjects’ pupil diameter remained at the same level after the initial increase. The amount of dilation depended on information load for male subjects only. Results were taken as further in…

Effect of Phenylephrine on the Accommodative System

2016

Accommodation is controlled by the action of the ciliary muscle and mediated primarily by parasympathetic input through postganglionic fibers that originate from neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia. During accommodation the pupil constricts to increase the depth of focus of the eye and improve retinal image quality. Researchers have traditionally faced the challenge of measuring the accommodative properties of the eye through a small pupil and thus have relied on pharmacological agents to dilate the pupil. Achieving pupil dilation (mydriasis) without affecting the accommodative ability of the eye (cycloplegia) could be useful in many clinical and research contexts. Phenylephr…

Changes in Pupil Area during Low-energy Femtosecond Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery

2018

Purpose: To study the potential changes in pupil area within low-energy femtosecond-laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). Methods: A retrospective assessment of the pupil size was performed in the eyes undergoing FLACS using the Ziemer LDV Z8. We measured the pupil diameters as part of the images taken preoperatively and at the completion of laser pretreatment (after releasing the suction). We calculated the pupil area in 40 eyes of 40 patients (14 right and 26 left eyes). The mean ± standard deviation (SD) of age of the patients was 74 ± 7.4 years (range: 51-87). Paired t-test was used for statistical analyses. Subgroups were built with reference to age and preoperative pupil area (smal…

Role of  1-Adrenoceptor Subtypes in Pupil Dilation Studied With Gene-Targeted Mice

2014

PURPOSE The α₁A-adrenoceptor (α₁A-AR) subtype was suggested to mediate contraction and trophic effects in the iris dilator muscle, and thus its pharmacological blockade may be involved in intraoperative floppy iris syndrome. We tested the hypothesis that the α₁A-AR mediates pupil dilation and trophic effects in the mouse iris. METHODS The α₁-AR subtype mRNA expression was quantified in iris tissue by real-time PCR. To assess the role of individual α₁-ARs for mediating pupil dilation, the α₁-AR agonist phenylephrine was topically applied to the ocular surface of mice deficient in one of the three α₁-AR subtypes (α₁A-AR(-/-), α₁B-AR(-/-), α₁D-AR(-/-), respectively) and wild-type controls. Cha…

Diverse yet similar : English teachers' conceptions of multicultural teaching and pupils of multicultural background

2010

Maahanmuuttajien määrä Suomessa on kasvanut viimeisten kahden vuosikymmenen aikana merkittävästi.

2017

The aim of this study is to find tools for the instrument teacher to support the student's learning motivation. The research is set in the cultural region of Central Ostrobothnia. The research material consists of a survey conducted by means of a questionnaire, recorded video footage of lessons given by three violin teachers, and a total of eight interviews with these teachers and their students. The data was analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study reveals that the most important motivation factor is the sense of relatedness of the pupil. The key factor is a close relationship between the pupil and the teacher, which allows the teacher to engage the pupil in the …

Differences in children's school success and family backgrounds : a comparative case study of pupils' performance in entrance examination in Ibadan, …

2013

This study reviewed the socio-economic backgrounds of pupils from various family structures (Monogamous, polygamous, single-parent and orphan children) against their academic performances in Ibadan North-East municipality of Ibadan, Nigeria. The diverse contending studies on how the socio-economic backgrounds of these family structures aid children’s academic attainments were examined. The data for this study was gathered in April, 2012. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative data collection method. A total of two hundred and twenty pupils between the ages of 10 to15 in junior secondary schools were sampled, N=220 and 8 teachers were interviewed from the various pupils’ school…
