Image quality with multifocal intraocular lenses and the effect of pupil size
2007
Purpose To analyze the image quality with a refractive and 2 hybrid refractive–diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in vitro to determine the IOL modulation transfer function (MTF) following the EN-ISO international standard for distance and near vision and to study the IOLs' behavior with different pupil sizes. Setting Fundacion Oftalmologica del Mediterraneo, Valencia, Spain. Methods This study evaluated 4 IOLs: the hybrid refractive–diffractive AcrySof ReSTOR SN60D3 (Alcon) and Tecnis ZM900 (AMO), the refractive ReZoom NXG (AMO), and the monofocal AcrySof SN60WF (Alcon). The MTF was calculated from the cross-line spread function recorded with the OPAL Vector System (Image Sci…
Imaging Quality of Bifocal Piggyback Intraocular Lens versus ReSTOR and TECNIS Multifocal Lenses
2009
Purpose The imaging quality provided by a piggyback integrated by a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) + a bifocal IOL of zero power and +3.75 diopters of addition is compared with the optics quality of a simple multifocal IOL of the same power and addition. Methods The imaging quality was evaluated by determining the modulation transfer function (MTF), using an artificial eye simulating in vivo conditions of the anterior chamber, including an artificial cornea and a wet cell containing physiologic solution where the IOL was positioned. The MTFs of the bifocal piggyback for near and distance vision were measured, with pupil diameters of 3 and 5 mm, and compared with the MTFs of an equivalent …
Äidinkielen rooli vieraskielisen opetuksen eriyttämisessä
2013
This article examines the role of pupils’ L1 in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and summarises a part of a two-phased mixed methods research. In the qualitative phase, three CLIL teachers were interviewed and their CLIL lessons were observed. In the quantitative phase, a survey was formed based on the results emerging from the qualitative phase which was answered by 44 CLIL teachers in Finland. The results showed that language is an important factor in the differentiation of CLIL education. First, the teachers used pupils’ L1 to differentiate their teaching and to consider the pupils’ affective and emotional features. Second, the pupils’ L1 use was generally accepted in CLIL…
Questi i principali ambiti di riflessione trattati all’interno dell’articolo, in termini problematici e…
Early prediction of coma recovery after cardiac arrest with blinded pupillometry
2017
Objectives Prognostication studies on comatose cardiac arrest (CA) patients are limited by lack of blinding, potentially causing overestimation of outcome predictors and self-fulfilling prophecy. Using a blinded approach, we analysed the value of quantitative automated pupillometry to predict neurological recovery after CA. Methods We examined a prospective cohort of 103 comatose adult patients who were unconscious 48 hours after CA and underwent repeated measurements of quantitative pupillary light reflex (PLR) using the Neurolight-Algiscan® device. Clinical examination, electroencephalography (EEG), somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) and serum neuron specific enolase (NSE) were perfor…
Changes in physiological astigmatism of human eye during accommodation in emmetropes (Conference Presentation)
2017
Introduction: Most young emmetrope eyes are far from ideal and have some degree of minor spherocylindrical error including also physiological astigmatism. Because of the changes in the shape of optical interfaces, pupil size, eyelid pressure, tear film, body posture, binocularity and accommodation astigmatism is considered as constantly dynamic phenomenon (Cheng et al, 2004). The purpose of this study was to evaluate and quantify changes in physiological astigmatism during accommodation. Method: Twenty young emmetropes with mean age 24 ± 4 years were selected for the study. Refraction and accommodative response were measured monocularly for dominant eye with an open-field infrared autorefract…
Performance analysis of optical imaging systems based on the fractional fourier transform
1998
Some image quality parameters, such as the Strehl ratio and the optical transfer function, are analysed in the generalized phase-space, or x-p domain, of the fractional Fourier transform associated with a modified one-dimensional pupil function. Some experimental results together with computer simulations are performed which illustrate the tolerance to defocus of different apertures.
Cognitive Processing dissociation by mental effort manipulation in long demanding tasks
2020
AbstractIndividuals uses cognitive resources to modulate performance in demanding tasks and a non-invasive and reliable way of measuring mental effort is pupillometry. This study aimed to test the mental effort related to different processing systems in long tasks with controlled and automatic demands. We conducted two experiments with healthy subjects: in Experiment 1 (n=15), using a metronome to ensure control on task pace, participants performed a serial number generation task (Counting; little to no effort tasks), a random number generation (RNG; effortful tasks), and no task (Unfilled interval; no effort at all). In experiment 2, (n=15) participants performed counting tasks with or wit…
Objective assessment of the effect of pupil size upon the power distribution of multifocal contact lenses
2017
AIM: To analytically assess the effect of pupil size upon the refractive power distributions of different designs of multifocal contact lenses. METHODS: Two multifocal contact lenses of center-near design and one multifocal contact lens of center-distance design were used in this study. Their power profiles were measured using the NIMO TR1504 device (LAMBDA-X, Belgium). Based on their power profiles, the power distribution was assessed as a function of pupil size. For the high addition lenses, the resulting refractive power as a function of viewing distance (far, intermediate, and near) and pupil size was also analyzed. RESULTS: The power distribution of the lenses was affected by pupil siz…
