A mathematical model for the therapy of the HIV infection

2005

In this paper we consider the evolution of the HIV infection under a highly effective treatment based on a combination of RTI and/or PI drugs. This is usually modelled with a set of ODEs where the drug efficacy is a constant. In this paper we consider the treatment efficacy as a dynamic variable which evolves during the treatment. To model the dynamics of the drug efficacy we use an evolutive type assumption. The resulting set of ODEs are able to reproduce the typical pattern of the illness evolution under treatment: a period of remission, which can last several years, followed by a progressive recrudescence and a viral rebound.

Insights into genome plasticity of the wine-making bacterium Oenococcus oeni strain ATCC BAA-1163 by decryption of its whole genome.

2008

International audience; Studying genomes of O. oeni strains having opposite oenological aptitudes is important for understanding why this lactic acid bacterium involved in malolactic fermentation is so well adapted to wine. Here, the genome of a strain ATCC BAA-1163, is described and compared with the recently reported genome of the better wine-adapted strain PSU-1. The BAA-1163 genome (8X) was obtained by shotgun sequencing and Phrap assembling. Compact and 62% AT-rich, it consists of a circular 1,792,103-bp chromosome and a 3,948-bp plasmid. It was analysed through a CAAT-Box annotation platform and manually inspected. A total of 51 RNA genes were detected, including two rRNA operons (the…

Congenital anomalies from a physics perspective. The key role of "manufacturing" volatility

2020

Genetic and environmental factors are traditionally seen as the sole causes of congenital anomalies. In this paper we introduce a third possible cause, namely random "manufacturing" discrepancies with respect to ``design'' values. A clear way to demonstrate the existence of this component is to ``shut'' the two others and to see whether or not there is remaining variability. Perfect clones raised under well controlled laboratory conditions fulfill the conditions for such a test. Carried out for four different species, the test reveals a variability remainder of the order of 10%-20% in terms of coefficient of variation. As an example, the CV of the volume of E.coli bacteria immediately after…

The spatial analysis of cemeteries revisited. The example of the Late Iron Age and Early Gallo-Roman cemetery of Lamadelaine (Grand Duchy of Luxembou…

2012

Climate and agriculture: empirical evidence for countries and agroecological zones of the Sahel

2022

International audience; ow heterogenous is the impact of climate change across space and the type of agricultural production? In this paper, we investigate the relationship between climate change and variability, measured by temperature and rainfall, and agricultural production at the country and agroecological zone levels of the Sahel. We consider a crop production index and five cereals (maize, millet, sorghum, wheat and rice). Based on an original climate database and an agricultural production function estimated for the period 1961–2016, we show that average rainfall and temperature during the growing season indeed have highly heterogeneous effects on agricultural production, depending …
