Methodological advances in brain connectivity

2012

Determining how distinct neurons or brain regions are connected and communicate with each other is a crucial point in neuroscience, as it allows to investigate how the functional integration of specialized neural populations enables the emergence of coherent cognitive and behavioral states. The general concept of brain connectivity encompasses different aspects: structural connectivity is related to the description of anatomical pathways and synaptic connections; functional connectivity investigates statistical dependencies between spatially separated brain regions; effective connectivity refers to models aimed at elucidating driver-response relationships. The study of these different modes…

Artificial Neural Networks and Linear Discriminant Analysis:  A Valuable Combination in the Selection of New Antibacterial Compounds

2004

A set of topological descriptors has been used to discriminate between antibacterial and nonantibacterial drugs. Topological descriptors are simple integers calculated from the molecular structure represented in SMILES format. The methods used for antibacterial activity discrimination were linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and artificial neural networks of a multilayer perceptron (MLP) type. The following plot frequency distribution diagrams were used: a function of the number of drugs within a value interval of the discriminant function and the output value of the neural network versus these values. Pharmacological distribution diagrams (PDD) were used as a visualizing technique for the i…

Quantitative EEG during Early Recovery from Hypoxic-Ischemic Injury in Immature Piglets: Burst Occurrence and Duration

1999

This study examined the course of EEG recovery in an animal model of hypoxic-ischemic injury. The model used periods of hypoxia, room air and asphyxia to induce cardiac arrest. One-week-old piglets (n = 16) were exposed to a period of hypoxia, room air and complete asphyxia for 7 minutes. After cardiac arrest and resuscitation, two EEG features were evaluated as prognostic indicators of behavioral outcome as assessed by a neuroscore at 24 hours after insult. A prominent EEG feature was the number and duration of bursts evident during recovery. Episodes of bursting were detected through the thresholds on sustained periods of elevated power. After the animal was resuscitated, the EEG was moni…

SAL—A Novel Quality Measure for the Verification of Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts

2008

Abstract A novel object-based quality measure, which contains three distinct components that consider aspects of the structure (S), amplitude (A), and location (L) of the precipitation field in a prespecified domain (e.g., a river catchment) is introduced for the verification of quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF). This quality measure is referred to as SAL. The amplitude component A measures the relative deviation of the domain-averaged QPF from observations. Positive values of A indicate an overestimation of total precipitation; negative values indicate an underestimation. For the components S and L, coherent precipitation objects are separately identified in the forecast and obser…

Spatial Forecast Verification Methods Intercomparison Project: Application of the SAL Technique

2009

Abstract In this study, a recently introduced feature-based quality measure called SAL, which provides information about the structure, amplitude, and location of a quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) in a prespecified domain, is applied to different sets of synthetic and realistic QPFs in the United States. The focus is on a detailed discussion of selected cases and on the comparison of the verification results obtained with SAL and some classical gridpoint-based error measures. For simple geometric precipitation objects it is shown that SAL adequately captures errors in the size and location of the objects, however, not in their orientation. The artificially modified (so-called fake…

Real-time weather forecasting in the Western Mediterranean Basin: An application of the RAMS model

2014

Abstract A regional forecasting system based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) is being run at the CEAM Foundation. The model is started twice daily with a forecast range of 72 h. For the period June 2007 to August 2010 the verification of the model has been done using a series of automatic meteorological stations from the CEAM network and located within the Valencia Region (Western Mediterranean Basin). Air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed and direction of the output of the model have been compared with observations. For these variables, an operational verification has been performed by computing different statistical scores for 18 weather stations. This verif…

Evaluation and comparison of satellite precipitation estimates with reference to a local area in the Mediterranean Sea

2014

Precipitation measurement is a key activity for the analysis of storm processes as well as every hydrological process. Satellite retrieval systems, rain-gauge network and radar systems are complement to each other in terms of their coverage and capability of monitoring precipitation. Satellite rainfall estimates systems produce data with global coverage that can provide information in areas for which data from other sources are unavailable. Without referring to ground measurement, satellite-based estimates can be bias. Although some gauged adjusted satellite precipitation products are developed, an effective way of integrating multi-sources of precipitation information is still a challenge.…

Organosulfates in atmospheric aerosol: synthesis and quantitative analysis of pm2.5 from xi'an, northwestern c…

2018

Abstract. The sources, formation mechanism and amount of organosulfates (OS) in atmospheric aerosol are not yet well understood, partly due to the lack of authentic standards for quantification. In this study, we report an improved robust procedure for the synthesis of organosulfates with different functional groups. Nine authentic organosulfate standards were synthesized and four standards (benzyl sulfate, phenyl sulfate, glycolic acid sulfate, and hydroxyacetone sulfate) were used to quantify their ambient concentrations. The authentic standards and ambient aerosol samples were analyzed using an optimized ultra performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrom…

Development of fluorogenic probe-based PCR assays for the detection and quantification of bovine piroplasmids.

2009

This paper reports two new quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays, developed in an attempt to improve the detection of bovine piroplasmids. The first of these techniques is a duplex TaqMan assay for the simultaneous diagnosis of Babesia bovis and B. bigemina. This technique is ideal for use in South America where bovids harbour no theilerids. The second technique, which is suitable for the diagnosis of both babesiosis and theileriosis worldwide, involves fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) probes. In FRET assays, Babesia bovis, B. divergens, Babesia sp. (B. major or B. bigemina), Theileria annae and Theileria sp. were all identifiable based on the melting temperatures of their amplified f…
