Electrophoresis of colloidal dispersions in the low-salt regime

We study the electrophoretic mobility of spherical charged colloids in a low-salt suspension as a function of the colloidal concentration. Using an effective particle charge and a reduced screening parameter, we map the data for systems with different particle charges and sizes, including numerical simulation data with full electrostatics and hydrodynamics and experimental data for latex dispersions, on a single master curve. We observe two different volume fraction-dependent regimes for the electrophoretic mobility that can be explained in terms of the static properties of the ionic double layer.

Free energy is the key quantity to describe the thermodynamics of biological systems. In this perspective we consider the calculation of free energy, enthalpy and entropy from end-point molecular dynamics simulations. Modelling nanoscale fluid dynamics and transport in physiological flows

The concept of nanotechnology is discussed, and its connection with biomedical engineering is elucidated. For the specific field of nanoscale flow and transport problems of physiological relevance, some typical examples are presented, and their interaction is discussed for some classic biomechanical problems like the flow in arteries with blood-wall coupling. Then, existing computational models are presented and classified according to the length scale of interest, with emphasis on particle-fluid problems. Final remarks address the essential unity of biomedical and engineering behaviour and the possible relevance to small-scale industrial research.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has changed the way we communicate and work. To study the effects of ICT for Information Distribution (ID) and Task Assignment (TA) for gaining Teams’ Situational Awareness (TSA) across and within rescue teams, an indoor fire game was played with students. ROTOR FLUX OPTIMAL ESTIMATION FOR INDUCTION MOTOR CONTROL

Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze and design reduced order observers of the rotor flux of induction motors. The design requirements are: a) the convergence rate of the rotor flux estimation error; b) a low sensitivity to stator and rotor resistance variations; c) a low sensitivity to errors due to the implementation of the observers on microprocessor-based systems. It is shown that, in order to satisfy the requirements a)-c), it is sufficient to solve a constrained optimization problem according to a criterion in which these requirements appear explicitly. The implementation of the observer is discussed. The observer is tested by simulation and experiments.
