Strongly interacting Fermi gases with density imbalance

We consider density-imbalanced Fermi gases of atoms in the strongly interacting, i.e. unitarity, regime. The Bogoliubov-deGennes equations for a trapped superfluid are solved. They take into account the finite size of the system, as well as give rise to both phase separation and FFLO type oscillations in the order parameter. We show how radio-frequency spectroscopy reflects the phase separation, and can provide direct evidence of the FFLO-type oscillations via observing the nodes of the order parameter.

Abstract The effects of gravitational and centrifugal buoyancy on laminar flow and heat transfer in curved and helical pipes were investigated by numerical simulation. Six dimensionless numbers characterizing the problem were identified, and an analysis was conducted on the possible combinations of signs of the gravitational and centrifugal buoyancy effects. Two distinct Richardson numbers were introduced in order to quantify the importance of the two types of buoyancy, and it was shown that, in the case of heating from the wall, a maximum realizable value of the centrifugal Richardson number exists which is a linear function of the curvature δ (ratio of pipe radius a to curvature radius c)…

Abstract The problem of mass transfer in ducts with transpiring walls is analysed: the concepts of “solvent” and “solute” fluxes are introduced, all possible sign combinations for these fluxes are considered, and relevant examples from membrane processes such as electrodialysis, reverse osmosis and filtration are identified. Triangular norms and conjunction of conditional events

We study the relationship between a notion of conjunction among conditional events, introduced in recent papers, and the notion of Frank t-norm. By examining different cases, in the setting of coherence, we show each time that the conjunction coincides with a suitable Frank t-norm. In particular, the conjunction may coincide with the Product t-norm, the Minimum t- norm, and Lukasiewicz t-norm. We show by a counterexample, that the prevision assessments obtained by Lukasiewicz t-norm may be not coherent. Then, we give some conditions of coherence when using Lukasiewicz t-norm.
The $p\lambda n$ fractal decomposition: Nontrivial partitions of conserved physical quantities

A mathematical method for constructing fractal curves and surfaces, termed the $p\lambda n$ fractal decomposition, is presented. It allows any function to be split into a finite set of fractal discontinuous functions whose sum is equal everywhere to the original function. Thus, the method is specially suited for constructing families of fractal objects arising from a conserved physical quantity, the decomposition yielding an exact partition of the quantity in question. Smoking is a leading global cause of disease and mortality(1). We established the Oxford-GlaxoSmithKline study (Ox-GSK) to perform a genome-wide meta-analysis of SNP association with smoking-related behavioral traits. Our final data set included 41,150 individuals drawn from 20 disease, population and control cohorts. Our analysis confirmed an effect on smoking quantity at a locus on 15q25 (P = 9.45 x 10(-19)) that includes CHRNA5, CHRNA3 and CHRNB4, three genes encoding neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits. Constant circulation sequences of binary neutron stars and their spin characterization

For isentropic fluids, dynamical evolution of a binary system conserves the baryonic mass and circulation; therefore, sequences of constant rest mass and constant circulation are of particular importance. In this work, we present the extension of our Compact Object CALculator (\cocal{}) code to compute such quasiequilibria and compare them with the well-known corotating and irrotational sequences, the latter being the simplest, zero-circulation case. Hairy black-holes in shift-symmetric theories

Scalar hair of black holes in theories with a shift symmetry are constrained by the no-hair theorem of Hui and Nicolis, assuming spherical symmetry, time-independence of the scalar field and asymptotic flatness. The most studied counterexample is a linear coupling of the scalar with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. However, in this case the norm of the shift-symmetry current $J^2$ diverges at the horizon casting doubts on whether the solution is physically sound. We show that this is not an issue since $J^2$ is not a scalar quantity, since $J^\mu$ is not a diff-invariant current in the presence of Gauss-Bonnet. Calibrating storage tanks for soil erosion measurement from plots

Many plots for soil loss measurements are equipped with a sequence of tanks for measuring runoff volume and sediment concentration. The stored water volume is easily determined by a water depth measurement while the sediment concentration is often measured by collecting samples of the mixed suspension. In this paper, using the Π-theorem of dimensional analysis, the functional relationship describing the mixing of the suspension in the tank is expressed in a dimensionless form.
