Quantum repulsive Nonlinear Schrödinger models and their ‘Superconductivity’

1995

Abstract The fundamental role played by the quantum repulsive Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation in the evolution of our understanding of the phenomenon of superconductivity in appropriate metals at very low temperatures is surveyed. The first major work was that in 1947 by N. N. Bogoliubov, who studied the very physical 3-space-dimensions problem and super fluidity; and the survey takes the form of an actual dedication to that outstanding scientist who died four years ago. The 3-space-dimensions NLS equation is not integrable either classically or quantum mechanically. But a number of recently discovered closely related lattices in one space dimension (one space plus one time dimension) …

Steering distillation processes through quantum Zeno dynamics

2005

A quantum system in interaction with a repeatedly measured one undergoes a nonunitary time evolution and is pushed into a subspace substantially determined by the two-system coupling. The possibility of suitably modifying such an evolution through quantum Zeno dynamics (i.e., the generalized quantum Zeno effect) addressing the system toward an a priori decided target subspace is illustrated. Applications and their possible realizations in the context of trapped ions are also discussed.

Representations and derivations of quasi ∗-algebras induced by local modifications of states

2009

Abstract The relationship between the GNS representations associated to states on a quasi ∗-algebra, which are local modifications of each other (in a sense which we will discuss) is examined. The role of local modifications on the spatiality of the corresponding induced derivations describing the dynamics of a given quantum system with infinite degrees of freedom is discussed.

State-to-State Quantum Dynamics Calculations of the C plus OH Reaction on the Second Excited Potential Energy Surface

2011

Accurate three-dimensional quantum-mechanical scattering calculations using a time-indepedent hyperspherical method have been performed for the C((3)P) + OH(X(2)Π) → CO(a(3)Π) + H((2)S) reaction on the second excited potential energy surface of 1(4)A″ symmetry. State-to-state reaction probabilities at a total angular momentum J = 0 have been computed in a wide range of collision energies. Many pronounced resonances have been found, espcially at low energy. The product vibrational distributions are noninverted. The present results therefore suggest that the title reaction proceeds via a long-lived intermediate complex. An approximate quantum-mechanical rate constant has also been calculated,…

Quantum Dynamics of the 18O + 36O2 Collision Process

2015

We report full quantum cross sections and rate constants for the (18)O + (36)O2 → (36)O2 + (18)O collision process. This constitutes to the best of our knowledge the first dynamical study of the (18)O(18)O(18)O system, with three identical (18)O oxygen atoms. We emphasize the comparison with the (16)O + (32)O2 collision as this latter presents the exact same features as the one treated here, except the consistent change of mass for all three atoms. We find very similar behaviors in the cross sections, and we confirm that the rates are faster when three identical nuclei are involved. In particular, we cannot dynamically study this system with classical trajectory methods, and we have to incl…

Two-qubit entanglement generation through non-Hermitian Hamiltonians induced by repeated measurements on an ancilla

2020

In contrast to classical systems, actual implementation of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian dynamics for quantum systems is a challenge because the processes of energy gain and dissipation are based on the underlying Hermitian system&ndash

Multi-State Quantum Dissipative Dynamics in Sub-Ohmic Environment: The Strong Coupling Regime

2015

We study the dissipative quantum dynamics and the asymptotic behavior of a particle in a bistable potential interacting with a sub-Ohmic broadband environment. The reduced dynamics, in the intermediate to strong dissipation regime, is obtained beyond the two-level system approximation by using a real-time path integral approach. We find a crossover dynamic regime with damped intra-well oscillations and incoherent tunneling and a completely incoherent regime at strong damping. Moreover, a nonmonotonic behavior of the left/right well population difference is found as a function of the damping strength.

Large-scale effects of migration and conflict in pre-agricultural groups: Insights from a dynamic model.

2016

The debate on the causes of conflict in human societies has deep roots. In particular, the extent of conflict in hunter-gatherer groups remains unclear. Some authors suggest that large-scale violence only arose with the spreading of agriculture and the building of complex societies. To shed light on this issue, we developed a model based on operatorial techniques simulating population-resource dynamics within a two-dimensional lattice, with humans and natural resources interacting in each cell of the lattice. The model outcomes under different conditions were compared with recently available demographic data for prehistoric South America. Only under conditions that include migration among c…

Quantum dissipative dynamics of a bistable system in the sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic regime

2016

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a multilevel bistable system coupled to a bosonic heat bath beyond the perturbative regime. We consider different spectral densities of the bath, in the transition from sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic dissipation, and different cutoff frequencies. The study is carried out by using the real-time path integral approach of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional. We find that, in the crossover dynamical regime characterized by damped \emph{intrawell} oscillations and incoherent tunneling, the short time behavior and the time scales of the relaxation starting from a nonequilibrium initial condition depend nontrivially on the spectral properties of the heat bath.
