'Forgotten Missionaries: St Augustine of Canterbury in Anglo-Saxon and Post-Conquest England’

2014

The essay provides a full overview of the alternate fortune of the cult of St Augustine of Canterbury and other missionaries, who hold a distinctive place in Anglo-Saxon hagiography. The essay takes into examination both literary and liturgical witnesses and both pre- and post-Conquest texts, in Latin and the vernacular. The narrative of the mission and of Augustine himself offered by Bede, although inevitably partial, shaped all the successive representations of the saint in the few literary witnesses dating from the Anglo-Saxon period. The Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum will remain the major source also in post-Conquest England and be largely drawn upon by Goscelin. For its part, …

2019

International audience; At the time of the conquest of Sicily, ruled by Arabs for two centuries, Roger de Hauteville placed in Troina his first capital (1062), made the town becoming episcopal see. For this purpose, he founded in the town a cathedral church, too. However, the original aspect of the building changed deeply because of earthquakes: collapse and significant alterations occurred between the 15th and 18th centuries, causing the current architectural form. In this paper, thanks to the study of sources, the direct analysis of the building and the interpretation of the new acquired informations, some aspects of building's architectural history are clarified; in addition, a new hypot…

1996

The studies about the conquest of Valence by the king Jaume I during the Xlllth century had emphasized the more great participation of the Aragonese nobility rather than the Catalan, so in the war as in the repartition of the land and the seigniories. Also it's affirmed that the Aragonese people remained in the Vanencian country, though the Catalans only came by religious reasons and went back to their land. This paper revises all the royal documents of the chancellery, the donations of the Repartiment and also the chronique of the king Jaume I, and demonstrates the opposed situation. The participation of the catalans nobility in the conquest of Valencia was very important —more than 150 kn…

Not only peasants: the myth of continuity in the irrigation communities of Valencia, Spain, in the medieval and early modern periods

2017

AbstractThe Horta of Valencia is a large irrigated area managed by eight communities of landowners. Traditionally, it was considered that these communities were composed of peasants, that they were self-managed and self-governed, and that they had remained immutable over time. However, the historical evidence shows that this is not true for pre-modern times. This article examines a possible Islamic origin of these institutions, the rupture caused by the Christian conquest of Valencia in the thirteenth century, the structure of the communities, and the social diversity of their members within the framework of feudalism. We conclude that irrigation communities cannot be used as examples of in…

Tòpics retòrics dels textos hagiogràfics bizantins i catalans

2018

“Another Munich We Just Cannot Afford”: Historical Metonymy In Politics

2016

The appeasement of Hitler and the Munich Agreement is a rhetorical comparison used commonly in international relations to defend politico-military action. On the basis of conceptual history and rhetorics, we examine cases of political speech in this paradigm. Firstly, we discuss time and conceptualize experience into first and second order experiences. Secondly, the roles of metaphor, metonymy and analogy in relation to thought and action are examined. We then contextualise Munich 1938, and present three cases demonstrating the political usage of this metonymy since WWII. These range from the Suez Crises to the Gulf War and on-going War on Terror. These cases show that “Munich” can be used …

Gennadios Scholarios and the Church of the Holy Apostles

2020

The article tests the established view that Gennadios Scholarios, the first patriarch of Constantinople after the 1453 Conquest, used the church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople as the seat of the Patriarchate for a few months in 1454 before moving to the building complex of the Pammakaristos monastery. After pointing out that all the sources that narrate the story of the installation of the Patriarchate in the famous Byzantine church date from the 16th century or later, the author examines sources contemporary with the events, including texts written by Scholarios himself. The aim of the article is to show that Scholarios officiated occasionally in the Holy Apostles and managed to sa…

The fissures of the nation: tensions and political-religious readings on the conquest of America in the 18th century

2020

The Ideological Framework of the French Nouvelle Droite and the Contemporary Finnish Far Right

2015

This article deals with the xenophobic discourse of contemporary Finnish anti-immigrationists, namely the anti-immigration faction of the Perussuomalaiset party and its 'metapolitical' background organisation - Suomen Sisu. It focuses on two main themes - differentialism and anti-egalitarianism - as they have been conceptualised by the French Nouvelle Droite (ND) and the European New Right. Because these themes have been used to serve a variety of anti-immigration movements and parties within Europe, the article examines whether the selective reception of differentialism and anti-egalitarianism have a part to play in the xenophobic discourse within Finnish politics as well. The Finnish anti…
