The mechanism of the intramolecular Diels#8211;Alder (IMDA) reaction of benzoquinone 1, in the absence and in the presence of three water molecules, 1w, has been studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods, using the M05-2X and B3LYP functionals for exploration of the potential energy surface (PES). Two new dinuclear copper(II) metallacyclophanes with 1,4-disubstituted 9,10-anthraquinonebis(oxamate) bridging ligands are reported that can reversibly take and release electrons at the redox-active ligand and metal sites, respectively, to give the corresponding mono- and bis(semiquinonate and/or catecholate) Cu(II)2 species and mixed-valent Cu(II)/Cu(III) and high-valent Cu(III)2 ones. Effects of static and dynamic perturbations on isotropic hyperfine coupling constants in some quinone radicals.

The effects of solvent dielectric response on the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants of the 1,4-benzoquinone, 1,4-naphthoquinone and 9,10-anthraquinone anions and 1,4-naphthalenediol cation radicals were studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and by the theoretical density functional method within the polarizable continuum model. Experimental results demonstrate that the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants can be obtained with high accuracy and that the effects of solvent impurities can be minimized by careful sample preparation. A concise total synthesis of the apoptosis-inducing, marine metabolite thiaplidiaquinone A is described. The key ring forming steps are both based on biosynthetic considerations and involve the construction of the central benzo[c]chromene quinone unit by an extremely facile oxa-6π-electrocyclic ring closure reaction of an ortho-quinone intermediate, derived by tautomerization of a bis-benzoquinone, readily accessed from two simple phenolic precursors. This is followed by the installation of the 1,4-thiazine-dioxide ring by reaction of the benzo[c]chromene quinone with hypotaurine.

The derivatization of amphetamine and methamphetamine with 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate (NQS) into solid-phase extraction cartridges (C 18 ) is described. Optimum conditions were the use of carbonate–hydrogencarbonate buffer of pH 10, a 10 min reaction time at 25 °C and an NQS concentration of 9.6 × 10 - 3 M. The accuracy and the precision of the method were tested. The results obtained with the proposed liquid–solid procedure were compared with those obtained with a traditional liquid–liquid extraction with hexane–ethyl acetate. Abstract Three phenolic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds: 7-methylaromadendrin, isoprenylhydroquinone glucoside, and 3.5-dicaffeoylquinic acid methyl ester, all isolated from Western Mediterranean Asteraceae species, have been studied for their inhibitory activity against protein carbonylation, a harmful post-translational modification of peptide chains associated with degenerative diseases. All compounds have proven to be effective, with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) values in the micromolar range, against bovine serum albumin carbonylation caused by hypochlorite, peroxynitrite, and phorbol ester-induced leukocyte oxidative burst.

Objetive and Design: We have investigated the mechanisms of action of aethiopinone, an anti-inflammatory compound from Salvia aethiopis L. roots.¶Material and Subjects: Human neutrophils from healthy volunteers and murine peritoneal macrophages. Swiss mice were randomly divided into groups of six animals.¶Treatment: Test compounds were applied topically in the mouse ear oedema test. Exogenous ochronosis is a paradoxical hyper-pigmentation of the skin caused by the long-term use of hydroquinone-containing bleaching creams. Ochronosis is an uncommon condition characterized by yellow-brown pigmented deposits in the dermis. We report two cases of exogenous ochronosis in two female patients of the sub-Saharan African population. The lesions were characterized by an asymptomatic hyper-pigmentation of the face with gradually progressive blue-black macular patches, and in case no. 2, in addition to dyschromic lesions, striae atrophicae were present. Induction of micronuclei in V79 Chinese hamster cells by tetrachlorohydroquinone, a metabolite of pentachlorophenol

Tetrachlorohydroquinone, a metabolite of the fungicide pentachlorophenol, induced significant dose-related increases in micronuclei in V79 Chinese hamster cells without exogenous metabolic activation. The lowest observed effective dose was 10 microM, where the relative survival was about 62%. At the highest dose tested, 20 microM, the relative survival was about 8% and the frequency of cells with micronuclei was about 6 times the solvent control frequency. The induction of micronuclei by tetrachlorohydroquinone was significantly inhibited by the hydroxyl radical scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide at 5% (v/v).
