Entanglement-Based dc magnetometry with separated ions

We demonstrate sensing of inhomogeneous dc magnetic fields by employing entangled trapped ions, which are shuttled in a segmented Paul trap. As sensor states, we use Bell states of the type j↑↓i þ eiφj↓↑i encoded in two 40Caþ ions stored at different locations. The linear Zeeman effect leads to the accumulation of a relative phase φ, which serves for measuring the magnetic-field difference between the constituent locations. Common-mode magnetic-field fluctuations are rejected by the entangled sensor state, which gives rise to excellent sensitivity without employing dynamical decoupling and therefore enables accurate dc sensing. This paper takes into account the characterisation of ephemeral stream hydrology from Mediterranean environments. The heavy floods that these countries suffer are due to firstly, the physical watershed features (steep slopes, scarced vegetation cover and thin soils) and, secondly, to the intense and variable rainfall. Large quantities of precipitation fall in a matter of hours, or even minutes, over very steep catchments, causing catastrophic flash-floods, with very pointed hydrographs and short time lags. [EN] Floods are a consequence of extreme rainfall events. Although surface runoff generation is the origin of discharge, flood research usually focuses on lowlands where the impact is higher. Runoff and sediment delivery at slope and pedon scale receiving much less attention in the effort to understand flood behaviour in time and space.
