Isolation of the silicatein-α interactor silintaphin-2 by a novel solid-phase pull-down assay.

2011

The skeleton of siliceous sponges consists of amorphous biogenous silica (biosilica). Biosilica formation is driven enzymatically by means of silicatein(s). During this unique process of enzymatic polycondensation, skeletal elements (spicules) that enfold a central proteinaceous structure (axial filament), mainly comprising silicatein, are formed. However, only the concerted action of silicatein and other proteins can explain the genetically controlled diversity of spicular morphotypes, from simple rods with pointed ends to intricate structures with up to six rays. With the scaffold protein silintaphin-1, a first silicatein interactor that facilitates the formation of the axial filament and…

In vitro perception of low-contrast features in digital, film, and digitized dental radiographs: A receiver operating characteristic analysis

2005

Objective To compare experimentally the image quality of charged-coupled device (CCD)-based digital, flatbed scanner digitized, and dental film radiographs. Study design High-contrast standardized radiographs of an aluminum step wedge containing boreholes were obtained on dental radiographic film (F) and a CCD receptor (D). Digitization (S) was done with a flatbed scanner. Each radiograph was separated into 23 single images, 18 of which showed a dark spot. Thirty observers indicated their confidence on the visibility of the spots for a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results Mean Az values (area beneath the ROC curves) differed significantly (P < .05), being highest for D …

Stellenwert bildgebender Verfahren in der Diagnostik des lumbalen Bandscheibenvorfalles

2008

As a seeming law of nature the possibility of making use of various multiplanar sectional imaging techniques is accompanied by diagnostic exaggeration. Simple and cost effective procedures with low radiation dosage such as plain x-rays of the spine are being thrust into the background. Not seldom are patients referred to the spine surgeon with MRI or Cat scan at hand but lacking standard radiographs. As far as the assessment of intervertebral disc disease is concerned the combination of plain X-rays of the spine and computed tomography of the level in question turned out to be sufficient for indication of the operation in more than 90% of 450 patients after nucleotomie at the Orthopedic Uni…

Surgical Highways to the Craniovertebral Junction: Is It Time for a Reappraisal?

2019

Background: The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) can be affected by a variety of congenital or acquired anomalies. Because of its complexity, a careful evaluation of bones and ligamentous structures in all three planes is required. This can be achieved by studying the CVJ in terms of several anatomical and radiological lines that have been visualized to facilitate understanding of its surgical anatomy. In this study we aimed to review the state-of-the art craniometric CVJ lines and approaches. Methods: In December 2016 a PubMed search was performed, including the search terms ‘CVJ surgical approach/line’, ‘cervical approach’, ‘craniometric measurement’, ‘CVJ anatomy’ and ‘ventral/dorsal/far-l…

Sunitinib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma after progression under sorafenib treatment.

2010

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sunitinib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after progression under sorafenib treatment. Methods: Sunitinib was administered at 37.5 mg daily (4-weeks-on/2-weeks-off schedule) after progression under sorafenib treatment. Adverse events (AEs) were assessed using NCI-CTCAE v3.0, and tumor response was evaluated according to RECIST. Data were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Eleven patients with metastatic disease were treated. Seven patients (64%) presented with no liver cirrhosis, including 3 patients with a history of liver transplantation. The first radiologic…

Radiographic estimation of the growth rate of initially underdiagnosed ameloblastomas.

2019

Background To evaluate the specific growth rate (SGR) of ameloblastoma. Material and Methods Cases of ameloblastoma initially underdiagnosed (e.g. cases overlooked or diagnosed as reactive lesions) which had adequate radiographic documentation to evaluate their progression were retrospectively selected. Two panoramic radiographs were analyzed to determine the specific growth rate (SGR) of each tumor, defined as the logarithm of the ratio of final tumor area (when the diagnosis of ameloblastoma was made) to the initial tumor area (when the lesion was underdiagnosed), divided by the time interval between the radiographic images. The tumor area was measured using the software ImageJ. Results T…

Magnetic resonance imaging of the siliceous skeleton of the demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis

2005

The skeletal elements (spicules) of the demosponge Lubomirskia baicalensis were analyzed; they are composed of amorphous, non-crystalline silica, and contain in a central axial canal the axial filament which consists of the enzyme silicatein. The axial filament, that orients the spicule in its longitudinal axis exists also in the center of the spines which decorate the spicule. During growth of the sponge, new serially arranged modules which are formed from longitudinally arranged spicule bundles are added at the tip of the branches. X-ray analysis revealed that these serial modules are separated from each other by septate zones (annuli). We describe that the longitudinal bundles of spicule…

Studies on sea urchin oocytes. II. Synthesis of RNA during oogenesis.

1972

Abstract Isolated oocytes of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus actively incorporate 3H-uridine into RNA. Labeled RNA was analysed by sucrose gradient and acrylamide gel electrophoresis following cell fractionation. Much of the radioactivity is incorporated at the nucleolar level in the form of rRNA precursors. The kinetics of maturation of these latter suggests that this occurs at a slower rate than during embryogenesis. Other non-nucleolar RNA classes are also actively labelled and retained in the nucleus for many hours. These results are confirmed by an autoradiographic investigation.
