TAZ is required for metastatic activity and chemoresistance of breast cancer stem cells
2015
Metastatic growth in breast cancer (BC) has been proposed as an exclusive property of cancer stem cells (CSCs). However, formal proof of their identity as cells of origin of recurrences at distant sites and the molecular events that may contribute to tumor cell dissemination and metastasis development are yet to be elucidated. In this study, we analyzed a set of patient-derived breast cancer stem cell (BCSC) lines. We found that in vitro BCSCs exhibit a higher chemoresistance and migratory potential when compared with differentiated, nontumorigenic, breast cancer cells (dBCCs). By developing an in vivo metastatic model simulating the disease of patients with early BC, we observed that BCSCs…
Heterogeneity of Human Melanoma Cell Lines: a quantitative study of protein and mRNA expression profiles using Flow Cytometry and Real time PCR
2015
Hsp60 from cancer cells can reach near and distant targets: A proposal for a multistage pathway
2011
Cancer cells have means to influence other cells in their vicinity and distant, and in this signal-delivering mechanisms the chaperonin Hsp60 plays a role, which is currently being recognized as potentially crucial for the growth and dissemination of at least certain types of tumors. In order to arrive at its destination, Hsp60, a typical resident of mitochondria in normal and tumor cells, leaves the organelle and reaches the blood. In the latter, Hsp60 can travel and arrive at targets situated far away from its origin. The details of the route followed by Hsp60 and their molecular mechanisms have not yet been fully elucidated. We investigated Hsp60 levels and secretion in normal and tumor …

FORMATION OF ALIPHATIC CARBOXYLIC ACIDS DURING ALKALINE PULPING OF MULI BAMBOO
2002
ABSTRACT A study on the formation of aliphatic carboxylic acids, i.e., formic and acetic acids and various hydroxy monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, during soda-AQ, kraft, and kraft-AQ pulping of muli bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) was carried out. Detailed gas chromatographic analyses revealed that the most abundant hydroxy carboxylic acids were 2-hydroxybutanoic, lactic, glucoisosaccharinic, glycolic, xyloisosaccharinic, 3,4-dideoxypentonic, and 3-deoxypentonic acids. The presence of AQ depressed the formation of 2-hydroxybutanoic, xyloisosaccharinic, and glucoisosaccharinic acids, and accelerated the formation of glycolic and 3-deoxypentonic acids as well as 3-deoxytetronic acid but h…

Quantitative determination of the main aliphatic carboxylic acids in wood kraft black liquors by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrom…
2006
The versatile characterization of organic material and especially of the significant aliphatic hydroxy acids in black liquor is of great importance, for example, in monitoring the progress of the kraft pulping process. This paper describes a simple high-performance liquid chromatographic separation method with atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-APCI-MS) which was developed for the rapid quantitative analysis of these acids, mainly formed as the alkaline degradation products of feedstock carbohydrates. The fraction of carbohydrate degradation products is mainly composed of hydroxy monocarboxylic and volatile acids (formic and acetic acids) along with lesser amou…
A two-step synthesis of new macrobicyclic aza-ligands starting from “trans”dioxocyclam as diprotected macrocycle
1997
Abstract A rapid and convenient synthesis of two small aza-cryptands containing a 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane backbone is reported. This strategy can be applied to the preparation of many other aza-cages by varying the nature of the cross linker. Moreover, the two remaining secondary amine sites may allow the functionalization of these ligands or their grafting on a polymer.
Characterization of totally chlorine-free effluents from Kraft pulp bleaching
1999
A capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method for analyzing the total acid hydrolysis products (monosaccharides and their derivatives) of the dissolved carbohydrates from a totally chlorine-free bleaching plant was developed. Several borate buffer concentrations and other running conditions were tested. Neutral monosaccharides (arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, rhamnose and xylose) in hydrolysates were derivatized by means of 4-aminobenzonitrile and resolved by 500 mM borate buffer (pH 9.5, 16.0 kV). The detection level was less than 10 fmol. In addition, the separation of some uronic acids and oligosaccharides was studied.
Effect of extrusion and photoxidation on polyethylene/clay nanocomposites
2009
Polyethylene (a 1:1 blend of m-LLDPE and z-LLDPE) double layer silicate clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion using a twin screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) was used as a compatibiliser to enhance the dispersion of two organically modified monmorilonite clays (OMMT): Closite 15A (CL15) and nanofill SE 3000 (NF), and natural montmorillonite (NaMMT). The clay dispersion and morphology obtained in the extruded nanocomposite samples were fully characterised both after processing and during photo-oxidation by a number of complementary analytical techniques. The effects of the compatibiliser, the organoclay modifier (quartenary alkyl ammonium surfactant) …
