Diagnosis and grading of acute graft-versus-host disease in endoscopic biopsy series throughout the upper and lower intestine in patients after allog…

2019

Intestinal graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a potentially life-threatening condition after allogenic hematological stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT). Although efforts have been made to determine the best sites for endoscopic biopsies, an approach involving all accessible anatomical regions is lacking. We investigated 22 complete biopsy series, each comprising biopsies from 10 different sites of the upper and lower intestine from 21 patients. The majority of biopsies investigated revealed histological signs of acute GvHD. The highest incidence and most advanced grades of acute GvHD were found in the right colon and terminal ileum. We detected significant correlations between crypt or g…

Analyzing the teeth next to the alveolar cleft: Examination and treatment proposal prior to bone grafting based on three-dimensional versus two-dimen…

2016

Abstract Purpose The objective was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of three-dimensional (3D) cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) on information about the cleft and alignment of cleft neighboring teeth. Materials and methods Panoramic X-rays, small-volume CBCTs, and study casts of 20 patients with a total of 22 alveolar clefts were analyzed prior to secondary bone grafting. Six maxillofacial surgeons and 6 orthodontists rated the following parameters: visibility of alveolar cleft expansion, position and probability of alignment of cleft neighbored teeth. Two-dimensional (2D) X-rays and casts were rated first; CBCT and casts followed at least 4 weeks later. Radiologic bone he…

Estimated radiation exposure of German commercial airline cabin crew in the years 1960-2003 modeled using dose registry data for 2004-2015.

2016

Exposure to ionizing radiation of cosmic origin is an occupational risk factor in commercial aircrew. In a historic cohort of 26,774 German aircrew, radiation exposure was previously estimated only for cockpit crew using a job-exposure matrix (JEM). Here, a new method for retrospectively estimating cabin crew dose is developed. The German Federal Radiation Registry (SSR) documents individual monthly effective doses for all aircrew. SSR-provided doses on 12,941 aircrew from 2004 to 2015 were used to model cabin crew dose as a function of age, sex, job category, solar activity, and male pilots' dose; the mean annual effective dose was 2.25 mSv (range 0.01–6.39 mSv). In addition to an inverse …

A correlation linking the predicted mean vote and the mean thermal vote based on an investigation on the human thermal comfort in short-haul domestic…

2015

Abstract The results of an experimental investigation on the human thermal comfort inside the cabin of some Airbus A319 aircrafts during 14 short-haul domestic flights, linking various Italian cities, are presented and used to define a correlation among the predicted mean vote (PMV), a procedure which is commonly used to assess the thermal comfort in inhabited environments, and the equivalent temperature and mean thermal vote (MTV), which are the parameters suggested by the European Standard EN ISO 14505-2 for the evaluation of the thermal environment in vehicles. The measurements of the radiant temperature, air temperature and relative humidity during flights were performed. The air temper…

The "exposome" concept - how environmental risk factors influence cardiovascular health.

2019

There is general consensus that environmental pollution and non-chemical stressors contribute to the incidence and prevalence of chronic noncommunicable disease (e.g. cardiovascular, metabolic and mental). Clinical and epidemiological studies support that air pollution and traffic noise are associated with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and significantly contribute to overall mortality. In this respect, the “exposome” provides a comprehensive description of lifelong exposure history. A recent publication using an updated global exposure-mortality model found that the global all-cause mortality rate attributable to ambient air pollution by PM2.5 and O3 was 8.79 (95% CI 7.11–10.41) …

Immediately provisionalized OsseoSpeed(™) Profile implants inserted into extraction sockets: 3-year results.

2015

Objectives A sloped shoulder might improve the congruence between extraction socket and dental implant and may add to a better circumferential support of the peri-implant structures. Therefore, this study evaluates the 3-year clinical outcome (survival and success rates, marginal bone levels, and Pink Esthetic Score (PES)) of immediately inserted and provisionalized OsseoSpeed(™) Profile implants in the anterior maxilla. Material and methods Twenty-one implants were inserted in 16 patients. All implants were immediately placed into extraction sites with and without facial bone deficiencies. A flapless procedure was utilized, and the implants were provisionalized immediately. Facial gaps wer…

CD52‐negative T cells predict acute graft‐versus‐host disease after an alemtuzumab‐based conditioning regimen

2020

Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) after a reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) regimen with fludarabine, melphalan and alemtuzmab is an effective therapy for haematological malignancies. Alemtuzumab, a monoclonal antibody against CD52, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchor-bound surface protein on lymphocytes, depletes T cells to prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Despite this, acute and chronic GVHD (a/cGVHD) remain life-threatening complications after HSCT. The aim of the present study was to identify parameters to predict GVHD. In 69 patients after HSCT, T-cell subsets were functionally analysed. Reconstitution of CD52neg T cells and CD52neg regulatory T c…

High-resolution HLA matching in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a retrospective collaborative analysis.

2013

To validate current donor selection strategies based on previous international studies, we retrospectively analyzed 2646 transplantations performed for hematologic malignancies in 28 German transplant centers. Donors and recipients were high resolution typed for HLA-A, -B, -C, -DRB1, and -DQB1. The highest mortality in overall survival analysis was seen for HLA-A, -B, and DRB1 mismatches. HLA-DQB1 mismatched cases showed a trend toward higher mortality, mostly due to HLA-DQB1 antigen disparities. HLA incompatibilities at >1 locus showed additive detrimental effects. HLA mismatching had no significant effect on relapse incidence and primary graft failure. Graft source had no impact on surviv…

INFLUENCE OF ISLET TRANSPORTATION ON PANCREATIC ISLET ALLOTRANSPLANTATION IN TYPE 1 DIABETIC PATIENTS WITHIN THE SWISS-FRENCH GRAGIL NETWORK

2004

The influence of islet transportation on pancreatic islet allotransplantation in type 1 diabetic patients was evaluated within the GRAGIL network. From December 2001 to April 2003, 16 human pancreatic islet transplants were performed in 9 type 1 diabetic patients with an established kidney graft (functioning for at least 6 months) in four centers of the GRAGIL network. Islet isolation was performed in a core laboratory in Geneva, and the islet preparations were shipped by ambulance to each center for transplantation. One month after transplantation, the efficiency of the graft was assessed according to islet transportation time (ITT): ITT less than 2 hours (group 1, n=5), and ITT greater tha…

Safety and feasibility of CHOP/rituximab induction treatment followed by high-dose chemo/radiotherapy and autologous PBSC-transplantation in patients…

2003

Patients with no prior chemotherapy and with advanced and progressive follicular lymphoma (FCL) or mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) were enrolled into a treatment protocol combining CHOP/rituximab-CHOP therapy with subsequent consolidation high-dose therapy (HDT) to evaluate the safety and feasibility of this treatment. Overall, 15 patients were enrolled and 13 patients completed the entire treatment protocol without major toxicities or increased infectious complications. One patient withdrew consent after achieving complete remission (CR) prior to HDT. One patient was taken off study with signs of disease progression after induction treatment. All patients showed stable engraftment after HDT. Re…
