Digital and handcrafting processes applied to sound-studies of archaeological bone flutes

2016

International audience; Bone flutes make use of a naturally hollow raw-material. As nature does not produce duplicates, each bone has its own inner cavity, and thus its own sound-potential. This morphological variation implies acoustical specificities, thus making it impossible to handcraft a true and exact sound-replica in another bone. This phenomenon has been observed in a handcrafting context and has led us to conduct two series of experiments (the first-one using handcrafting process, the second-one using 3D process) in order to investigate its exact influence on acoustics as well as on sound-interpretation based on replicas. The comparison of the results has shed light upon epistemolo…

Handcrafting in archaeomusicological research

2016

There were no conference proceedings but you may find video recordings of some of the talks by following the link above; International audience; Archaeological flutes, as sound artefacts, both stand in material and immaterial culture. They are made of tremendous subtleties that archaeologists have a hard time to understand while these are craftsmen's everyday life. These subtleties are the link between material (rough material, tools, gestures) and immaterial (sounds, music, timber, uses) issues. They are the reason why archaeology cannot study ancient sound instruments on its own. A one-year insight experience of apprenticeship alongside a traditional-flute-maker (Jean-Daniel Talma, ElBock…

Immobilization of single-stranded DNA fragments to solid surfaces and their repeatable specific hybridization : covalent binding or adsorption ?

2004

Abstract The different steps of the immobilization process of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) on surfaces by means of chemical grafting have been investigated using systematic measurements of grafting and hybridization densities by means of radioactive labelling. The immobilization by chemical grafting to a dense monomolecular layer of N-hydroxysuccinimidyl ester reactive functions attached to silica plates was performed from a dilute solution of amino-terminated oligonucleotides (10 μmol/l). The slow evaporation of the solvent allowed to increase the DNA grafting density by a factor of 10. A precise control of the rinsing process that followed the immobilization reaction allowed the discrimina…

Validation of a Portuguese version of the Groningen radiotherapy-induced xerostomia questionnaire

2022

The aim of this study was to validate and determine at pretest level the reliability of the Portuguese version of the Groningen radiotherapy-induced xerostomia questionnaire. This study employed 37 head and neck cancer patients. Each patient signed an informed consent and responded to the Portuguese version of the questionnaire in the form of an interview. This was repeated again after 2 weeks. A standard single question provided a validity check. Data were analyzed using Cronbach?s ? to test its reliability and total and interitem correlation, and intraclass correlation to determine its internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Construct validity supported by objective measurements…

A simple strategy based on photobiotin irradiation for the photoelectrochemical immobilization of proteins on electrode surfaces

2006

Abstract A photoactivable organic polymer was prepared first by electrogeneration of a conductive biotinylated polypyrrole film in acetonitrile electrolyte. The successive anchoring of avidin and photobiotin led to a multilayer configuration. The latter was illuminated with light (wavelength 370–400 nm) in the presence of proteins adsorbed onto its surface. The irradiation allowed the covalent linking of the proteins to the modified electrode. As a result of the photochemical reaction, a monolayer of enzyme (glucose oxidase, GOX or alkaline phosphatase, AP) was covalently bound to the photobiotin-modified surface with retention of their catalytic activities. The surfacic activities were 34 …

Effect of grafting on yield and quality of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.)

2013

Eggplants have fruits with different sizes, shapes and colours, according to the cultivar. Skin colour is due to anthocyanins, pigments located in the cell vacuole of fruit skin that belong to phenolic flavonoids, a powerful antioxidants group. Environmental conditions and growing techniques may influence fruits characteristics and their content of phenolic compounds. Grafting is a non chemical alternative for overcoming the effects of intensive and continuous cropping. The rootstocks preferred for eggplant are hybrids of tomato or tomato KVFN. Also species taxonomically close, as Solanum torvum, have been used and showed good vigour, compatibility and resistance to wilt disease. Informatio…

A two-step synthesis of new macrobicyclic aza-ligands starting from “trans”dioxocyclam as diprotected macrocycle

1997

Abstract A rapid and convenient synthesis of two small aza-cryptands containing a 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane backbone is reported. This strategy can be applied to the preparation of many other aza-cages by varying the nature of the cross linker. Moreover, the two remaining secondary amine sites may allow the functionalization of these ligands or their grafting on a polymer.
