Bioengineering Thymus Organoids to Restore Thymic Function and Induce Donor-Specific Immune Tolerance to Allografts.
2015
One of the major obstacles in organ transplantation is to establish immune tolerance of allografts. Although immunosuppressive drugs can prevent graft rejection to a certain degree, their efficacies are limited, transient, and associated with severe side effects. Induction of thymic central tolerance to allografts remains challenging, largely because of the difficulty of maintaining donor thymic epithelial cells in vitro to allow successful bioengineering. Here, the authors show that three-dimensional scaffolds generated from decellularized mouse thymus can support thymic epithelial cell survival in culture and maintain their unique molecular properties. When transplanted into athymic nude …
The use of normothermic machine perfusion to rescue liver allografts from expanded criteria donors
2021
The use of expanded criteria donors is one of the strategies used to overcome the gap between the demand for organs and the number of donors. Physicians debate the extent to which marginal grafts can be used. In recent years, normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) has been used to test liver viability before transplantation. Grafts underwent NMP whenever histological steatosis was > 40% or there were at least three Eurotransplant criteria for expanded criteria donor (ECD). We used NMP to test 19 grafts, 3 from donation after type 3 controlled cardiac death (DCD), and 16 from donation after brain death (DBD). Only two grafts from DBD were not transplanted, because perfusion proved they were…
Should kidney allografts from old donors be allocated only to old recipients?
2020
Contains fulltext : 226016.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) In several deceased donor kidney allocation systems, organs from elderly donors are allocated primarily to elderly recipients. The Eurotransplant Senior Program (ESP) was implemented in 1999, and since then, especially in Europe, the use of organs from elderly donors has steadily increased. The proportion of ≥60-year-old donors reported to the Collaborative Transplant Study (CTS) by European centers has doubled, from 21% in 2000-2001 to 42% in 2016-2017. Therefore, in the era of organ shortage it is a matter of debate whether kidney organs from elderly donors should only be allocated to elderly recipients or whether <65-y…
2017
This paper is a critical essay on the social value of craftsmen in ancient Greece as well of the merit and ethic responsibility connected to the social use of their skills and forms of knowledge, the so-called technai. On one hand a low grade of social consideration was attributed to craftsmen, especially among the upper classes in the Greek cities; on the other hand, craft and technical skills were an essential medium for all the material products and commodities to be supplied for the citizens. The origins of this ambiguous relationship between society and technical skills seem to lie in the particular social and political conditions of Greek craftsmen, mostly foreign people at the dispos…
Iron Age craftworks in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. An approach based in Cultural Inheritance Theory
2021
Functional outcomes of peripheral nerve repair and regeneration: clinical and experimental study
This study investigated pre- and post-operative evaluation of peripheral nerve injuries and functional outcomes of peripheral nerve regeneration after different type of injuries and different type of treatments. Neuromas/scar neuritis and brachial plexus injuries are specifically addressed; literature and experimental evidence on the outcomes of vascularized nerve grafts are presented.

The world is your oyster! : a material package for teaching handcrafts through CLIL
2014
