Objective regional frequency analysis and future change of extreme precipitation in Sicily, Italy
A paradigm of extreme rainfall pluvial floods in complex urban areas: the flood event of 15 July 2020 in Palermo (Italy)
2021
Abstract. In the last years, some regions of the Mediterranean area are witnessing a progressive increase in extreme events, such as urban and flash floods, as a response to the increasingly frequent and severe extreme rainfall events and their ground effects, which are often exacerbated by ever-growing urbanization. In such a context, the traditional defense of urban areas, which are usually based on urban drainage systems designed without regard to the impacts of urbanization and climate change on natural systems, may not be sufficient to deal with the risk deriving from the occurrence of such events. This study focuses on a very recent and particularly intense urban flood that occurred i…
Low-altitude outbreaks of human fascioliasis related with summer rainfall in Gilan province, Iran
2011
Following human fascioliasis outbreaks in 1988 and 1999 in Gilan province, northern Iran, efforts are now made to shed light on the seasonal pattern of fascioliasis transmission in this endemic area, taking into account snail host populations, climatic conditions and human cases. Populations of the intermediate host snail (Lymnaea spp.) peak in May and November, while there is a fourfold increase in the rate of human fascioliasis in February compared to that of September. Transmission is likely to occur mainly in late autumn and sporadically in late spring. Rainfall, seasonally analysed in periods of 3 years, indicates that accumulated summer rainfall may be related with the 1988 and 1999 h…
Using microtomography, image analysis and flow simulations to characterize soil surface seals
2012
Raindrops that impact on soil surface affect the pore structure and form compact soil surface seals. Damaged pore structure reduces water infiltration which can lead to increased soil erosion. We introduce here methods to characterize the properties of surface seals in a detailed manner. These methods include rainfall simulations, x-ray microtomography, image analysis and pore-scale flow simulations. Methods were tested using clay soil samples, and the results indicate that the sealing process changes several properties of the pore structure.
Land management impacts on soil properties and initial soil erosion processes in olives and vegetable crops
2020
Abstract This research aims to assess the impacts of soil use management on runoff, soil losses, and their main soil controls in vegetable cropland (CROP), tilled olives (OT), and grass-covered olive orchards (OGC) on Leptosol in Croatia. Soil analysis and rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to quantify runoff (Run), soil, and nutrient losses. Bulk density (BD) was significantly higher at OT plots, in addition to the CROP plots. Water-stable aggregates (WSA), mean weight diameter (MWD), and soil organic matter (OM) were significantly higher in OGC plots compared to the other land uses. Run and soil loss (SL) were significantly higher in CROP and OT plots compared to the OGC plots…
The Use of GAMLSS Framework for a Non-Stationary Frequency Analysis of Annual Runoff Data over a Mediterranean Area
2022
Climate change affects all the components of the hydrological cycle. Starting from precipitation distribution, climate alterations have direct effects on both surface water and groundwater in terms of their quantity and quality. These effects lead to modifications in water availability for agriculture, ecology and other social uses. Change in rainfall patterns also affects the runoff of natural rivers. For this reason, studying runoff data according to classical hydrological approaches, i.e., statistical inference methods that exploit stationary probability distributions, might result in missing important information relevant to climate change. From this point of view, a new approach has to…
PRECIPITATION ESTIMATION THROUGH SATELLITE SYSTEM OVER THE MAJOR MEDITERRANEAN ISLANDS
2017
Reliable and accurate precipitation measurement or estimation is crucial for disaster monitoring and water resource management. Nowadays the scientific community expects significant improvements in precipitation monitoring by the continuous technological evolution of satellite-rainfall estimate systems which are able to produce data with global coverage and thus can provide low-cost information even in scarcely populated areas or places where for economic reasons ground measures are missing. The most recent satellite mission is the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), which is an international constellation of ten partner satellites, and a source of rainfall estimates at high spatial and…
Intraseasonal rainfall variability over Madagascar
2016
International audience; Using daily rain-gauge records for Madagascar and nearby islands, this paper investigates rainfall intraseasonal variability at local and regional scales during the austral summer season (November–February), as well as the respective influences of recurrent convective regimes over the South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). Our results show a general consistency between local-scale rainfall variability in Madagascar and regional-scale features of climate variability. The influence of Tropical-Temperate Troughs in their mature phase and/or their easternmost locations is first underlined. The development of such systems over Southern Afr…
Measuring Rainfall Kinetic Power in Two Sicilian Experimental Areas by Drop-Size Distribution Data
2023
The rainfall kinetic energy, which affects soil erosion processes, can be calculated by the drop-size distribution (DSD) and falling velocity. This study presents the outcomes derived by the DSDs recorded with the same optical disdrometer in two experimental areas, located in Sicily (southern Italy). Specifically, the DSDs were recorded from March 2017 to December 2019 at Sparacia and from June 2006 to April 2014 at Palermo. The aims of this paper are both to compare the DSDs for the two sites and to evaluate the applicability of Gamma theoretical distribution. Moreover, the relations of rainfall kinetic power vs. rainfall intensity are assessed. Differences in DSDs, especially for rainfall…
Modelling rainfall interarrival times and rainfall depths at daily scale
2023
Analysis of daily rainfall data, and subsequent modelling of some derived variables concerning rainfall, is fundamental in different areas such as agricultural, ecological, and engineering disciplines. A way of studying the alternance of consecutive rainy days (wet spells) and no-rainy days (dry spells) is through the interarrival time (IT), which is the time elapsed between two consecutives rainy days. If we suppose that IT observations are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.), ITs are usually modelled through a renewal processes. The simplest renewal process is the Bernoulli process with ITs geometrically distributed. The need to suppose a non-constant probability of rain brin…
