Tehtaan varjosta uusiokäytön valoon : Mikkelin Graani - entisestä teollisuusalueesta palveluiden ja asumisen kaupunkiympäristöksi
2017
Violence, Gender and Affect : Interpersonal, Institutional and Ideological Practices
2021
This book presents new conceptual and theoretical approaches to violence studies. As the first research anthology to examine violating interpersonal, institutional and ideological practices as both gendered and affective processes, it raises novel questions and offers insights for understanding and resolving social and cultural problems related to violence and its prevention. The book offers multidisciplinary perspectives on various forms and intersections of different types of violence. The research ranges from the early modern era to the present day in Europe, US, Africa and Australia, representing disciplines such as gender studies, history, literature, linguistics, media and cultural st…
‘I was excited to train, so I didn’t have problems with the coach’: dual career athletes’ experiences of (dis)empowering motivational climates
2019
In addition to investing in athletic development, adolescent elite athletes are expected to complete their secondary education. As a result of this expectation and the demands of sport and education, they may struggle to sustain high levels of motivation for both domains. Grounded in theoretical tenets of empowering coaching, this study sought to explore student–athletes’ perceptions of empowering and disempowering motivational climates and their possible implications for athletes’ dual career experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 Finnish student–athletes, and the data were thematically analysed. The analysis indicated that a majority of the athletes had experiences…
Exploring the Life Form of a Student Athlete Afforded by a Dual Career Development Environment in Finland
2020
The current paper introduces a case study conducted in one of the most well-established athletic talent development environments in Finland, with the focus on the environment’s ecological dynamics and organizational culture, in light of its recent effort to rebrand itself as a dual career development environment. Our analysis has been inspired by the holistic ecological approach and ecological dynamics, wherein the authors have considered a dual career development environment from the point of view of its transactions with agentic individuals and affordances for student athletes in the study domain, the sports domain, and the private domain. The authors believe our findings can provide othe…
Rakenteiset editorit
2015
Työssä tarkastellaan rakenteisia editoreita, erityisesti niiden hyötyjä ohjelmoinnissa verrattuna perinteisiin tekstipohjaisiin editoreihin, sekä vertaillaan erilaisia olemassaolevia rakenteisia editoreita. The thesis examines structured editors, especially their advantages in programming over traditional text–based editors, and compares different existing structured editors.
Continental-scale patterns of pathogen prevalence: a case study on the corncrake
2014
Pathogen infections can represent a substantial threat to wild populations, especially those already limited in size. To determine how much variation in the pathogens observed among fragmented populations is caused by ecological factors, one needs to examine systems where host genetic diversity is consistent among the populations, thus controlling for any potentially confounding genetic effects. Here, we report geographic variation in haemosporidian infection among European populations of corncrake. This species now occurs in fragmented populations, but there is little genetic structure and equally high levels of genetic diversity among these populations. We observed a longitudinal gradient…

Nanodevices by DNA based gold nanostructures
2017
In this thesis DNA based structures were utilized to create gold nanostructures for nanosensing and nanoelectronic applications. In the past, both of these fields have been dominated by the conventional lithography methods, e.g., electron beam lithography and UV-lithography, but more recently scaling down the components by these techniques has become increasingly more complex and costly. Especially in the micro- and nanoelectronics, the increase in the component density and thus computational power would require fabrication of sub-10-nm components, which is challenging for the top-down approaches. Aforementioned developments have led researchers to seek alternative methods to fabricate these…
Experimental study of electron transport in mesoscopic carbon based nanostructures
2012
In this thesis we have studied experimentally electronic transport in mesoscopic hybrid polypyrrole-gold devices and single multiwalled carbon nanotube devices. A novel fabrication technique for mesoscopic conducting hybrid polymer-gold films has been developed. The hybrid polymer-gold films have been fabricated by electrochemical deposition of polypyrrole on a gold nanoisland layer. Temperature dependence of conductance show that the dominant transport mechanism in the polypyrrole-gold films is variable range hopping in the temperature range from 20 K to 300 K. At very low temperature strong nonlinearities in the field dependent conductance are observed. The field dependence follows a phen…
Synthesis of a labile sulfur-centred ligand, [S(H)C(PPh2S)2]-: structural diversity in lithium(i), zinc(ii) and nickel(ii) complexes
2016
A high-yield synthesis of [Li{S(H)C(PPh2S)2}]2 [Li2·(3)2] was developed and this reagent was used in metathesis with ZnCl2 and NiCl2 to produce homoleptic complexes 4 and 5b in 85 and 93% yields, respectively. The solid-state structure of the octahedral complex [Zn{S(H)C(PPh2S)2}2] (4) reveals notable inequivalence between the Zn–S(C) and Zn–S(P) contacts (2.274(1) Å vs. 2.842(1) and 2.884(1) Å, respectively). Two structural isomers of the homoleptic complex [Ni{S(H)C(PPh2S)2}2] were isolated after prolonged crystallization processes. The octahedral green Ni(II) isomer 5a exhibits the two monoprotonated ligands bonded in a tridentate (S,S′,S′′) mode to the Ni(II) centre with three distinctl…
