Is triploidy indisputably determinable in hybridogenetic hybrids by planimetric analyses of erythrocytes?

2008

The size of amphibian erythrocytes is positively correlated to their DNA content. Therefore, planimetry of erythrocytes has long been used to determine ploidy levels in amphibians. In Rana esculenta. a hybrid originating from Rana ridibunda x Rana lessonae natural crosses, planimetric determination of erythrocyte size is used to distinguish diploid and triploid specimen. In the present study we performed planimetric analyses on the hybrid Rana grafi, comprising a second hybridogenetic system with its parental species Rana ridibunda and Rana perezi in southern parts of France. We found size differences of diploid and triploid erythrocytes to range between 26 and 33% in studies on adult R. es…

The large invasive population of Xenopus laevis in Sicily, Italy

2008

AbstractThe worldwide spread of invasive species is considered to be one of the main causes of global amphibian declines and the loss of biodiversity in general. The African Clawed Frog, Xenopus laevis, shows a strong ability to establish populations and invade various geographic regions. In 2004 X. laevis was found in Sicily for the first time. The Sicilian population is probably the largest in Europe with a range of about 225 km2 in an area characterized by numerous agricultural ponds. This high density of ponds has potentially facilitated the dispersal of X. laevis. The frogs can move far from rivers or watercourses by utilizing the ponds as suitable "islands". The analysis of their diet…

High-pressure flow-injection assembly. Indirect determination of glycine by atomic absorption spectrometry.

1991

A procedure for the determination of glycine is described. The method is based on the reaction of the analyte with finely powdered, solid copper(II) carbonate in a continuous-flow assembly. The optimum experimental conditions of pH, temperature, sample volume, flow-rate, column length and internal diameter, and the linear range of calibration, were studied. Interference from foreign substances that accompany this amino acid in pharmaceutical formulations was studied, and the method was applied to the determination of glycine.

Principal component analysis for the selection of variables in the application of the H-point and generalised H-point standard addition method

2000

The present paper deals with the selection of variables for the H-point and generalised H-point standard additions methods (HPSAM and GHPSAM, respectively). Both methods are applied for the resolution of spectroscopic interfered signals in the UV-vis range. The HPSAM is a suitable method for the resolution of binary and ternary mixtures when the interferent is known. The GHPSAM is applied for the resolution of samples that contain unknown interferents. In this paper, a method based on the study of a principal components analysis (PCA) for the selection of variables for the HPSAM and GHPSAM is proposed. The PCA results show the isolation of the analyte signal from the sample signal, achieved…

Prediction of the chemiluminescent behavior of pharmaceuticals and pesticides.

2001

The present paper deals with the first attempt to apply molecular connectivity calculations to predict a chemical property with analytical usefulness: the chemiluminescent behavior of substances when reacted with common oxidants in a liquid phase. Preliminary evidence when searching for new direct CL methods consisted of the examination of analyte reaction with a wide range of oxidants and media. This task, which results in time-consuming and trial-and-error expensive procedures, is necessary due to ensure empirical or theoretical rules for CL prediction are available. On the other hand, in quantitative structure-activity relationship studies, molecular connectivity is a topological method …

Immuno-SLM—a combined sample handling and analytical technique

2004

Immuno-supported liquid membrane (immuno-SLM) extraction is a new technique that makes use of antibody (Ab)-antigen interactions as the "extraction force" to drive the mass transfer in a selective way. In immuno-SLM, anti-analyte (Ag) Abs are introduced into the acceptor phase of the SLM unit to trap the Ag that passes from the flowing donor through the SLM into the stagnant acceptor. The amount of immuno-extracted analyte (AbAg) is quantified by connecting the immuno-SLM unit on-line with a non-competitive heterogeneous fluorescence flow immunoassay (FFIA) that makes use of a fluorescein-labeled analyte tracer that titrates the residual excess of Ab present in the acceptor. A restricted ac…

Ellipsometric study of the physisorption of benzene on graphite

1987

The optical thickness of benzene on the (001) surface of a graphite single crystal has been studied by ellipsometry. Ellipsometric adsorption isotherms have been measured in the temperature range from 180 to 290 K. The maximum thickness of the adsorbed benzene film is constant in this temperature range and compares favourably with the value expected for one monolayer of molecules lying flat on the surface.

Mesocrystalline Cr and Sb-codoped anatase visible-light-driven photocatalyst

2018

Abstract We report on the synthesis, characterization and visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of mesocrystalline Cr- and Sb-codoped anatase nanoparticles. Discrete and morphologically well-defined assemblies of anatase nanoparticles sized below 100 nm × 50 nm were prepared by hydrothermal aging of aqueous solutions containing titanium alkoxide, chromium acetylacetonate, antimony acetate and triethanolamine (TEOA) as stabilizer. The as-prepared and TEOA-free doped nanoparticles showed similar crystallographic parameters and spectroscopic features. The incorporation of Cr and Sb dopant cations into the anatase nanoparticles was evaluated by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pa…

Combined Adsorption/Photocatalytic dye removal by copper-titania-fly ash composite

2020

Abstract Achieving both photocatalytic efficiency and adsorption capacity is essential to produce a highly efficient photocatalyst. This study fabricated a new photocatalyst by combining copper (Cu) doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) with fly ash (FA). The photocatalysts were synthesized using mild acid (acid-FA/Cu/TiO2), base (base-FA/Cu/TiO2), and deionized water (rFA/Cu/TiO2) activated FA. EDX confirmed the inclusion of Cu in both Cu/TiO2 and FA/Cu/TiO2 composites. XRD analysis indicated the presence of the anatase form of TiO2 after Cu doping and incorporation into modified FA. All three FA/Cu/TiO2 composites demonstrated high absorption (UV and visible region) compared to their TiO2 and Cu/…

X-ray measurements of charge transfer reactions involving cold, very highly charged ions

1999

The magnetic trapping mode of the Livermore high-energy Electron Beam Ion Trap is exploited to study charge transfer reactions between cold (few eV/amu) highly charged ions and gases. By selectively puffing neutral gases and monitoring the x-ray emission, state-selective measurements of the charge transfer reaction channels are possible. The observed K-shell x-ray spectra show prominent emission from high-n levels decaying to the n = 1 ground level, which is enabled by electron capture into states with low orbital angular momentum. A comparison with modeling calculations, therefore, allows a determination of the range of principal and angular momentum quantum numbers involved in the reactio…
