Anomalies in low-temperature lattice parameters of ErFeO3 and ErAlO3 single crystals: correlation with magnetic properties

Abstract The paper presents the results of an experimental study of thermal expansion of isostructural orthorhombic ErFeO3 and ErAlO3 single crystals. Changes of lattice parameters have been investigated by X-ray measurements in the 10–300 K temperature range. Above ∼150 K, experimental results correspond well to the phonon mechanism. At low temperatures distinct anisotropic anomalies were observed in both compounds; and a correlation with the magnetic properties of the relevant ions is noted.

Magnetic properties of six-coordinated high-spin cobalt(II) complexes: Theoretical background and its application

Abstract In this contribution we study and analyse the influence of the different parameters involved in the magnetic susceptibility of six-coordinated high-spin Co(II) complexes. We propose an empirical expression to fit the magnetic susceptibility of polycrystalline samples of mononuclear Co(II) complexes with an axial distortion, the variable parameters being Δ (axial distortion), α (orbital reduction factor) and λ (spin–orbit coupling). This expression avoids solving the 12 × 12 matrix associated to the distortion of the 4 T 1g term. Spin transition in [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2] - �SR study

The reversible thermal spin transition which occurs in [Fe(phen)(2)(NCS)(2)] around T-1/2 similar to 177 K has been investigated by muon spin relaxation (muSR) (similar to10-280 K). The depolarisation curves are well described by two Lorentzian lines represent fast and slow components in the decay curves, with the initial asymmetry parameter of the fast component found to track the spin transition in [Fe(phen)2(NCS),]. Comparison of zero-field and transverse field (20 Oe) muSR measurements shows that diamagnetic muonic species occur over the entire temperature range.

Debye-Waller factor in the spin crossover complex Fe(ppi)2(NCS)2

Abstract Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements for the complex Fe(ppi) 2 (NCS) 2 in the temperature range 11–300 K indicate that the spin transition of this compound is incomplete until 11 K. The similar Debye-Waller factors in high spin (HS) and low spin (LS) states is shown by the comparison of the HS fractions from the two different methods. The Debye temperature of the compound was calculated from the defined Debye-Waller factors obtained from Mossbauer measurement at each experimental temperature and was found to depend on the temperature as well as on the HS fraction. Coulomb blockade nanothermometer

Reliable thermometry is normally based on commercial secondary sensors which are factory calibrated. Primary thermometers exist, too, but their use is limited because of intrinsic slowness, complex instrumentation, or inconvenient installation at the desired location. We have found that arrays of nanoscale tunnel junctions exhibit properties which are very suitable for primary and secondary cryogenic thermometry. Temperature range of this Coulomb blockade thermometer (CBT) extends over about two decades for one sensor and the mean temperature is lithographically adjustable. A method for measuring mitochondrial mass and activity

Mitochondria, responsible for the energy-generating process essential for the cell metabolism, differ for the number, localization and activity in animal cells and tissues in relation to the energetic needs. Using fluorescent probes specific for mitochondria, Mitotracker Green (MTG) and Orange (MTO), and Confocal Laser-Scanning Microscope (CLSM), we elaborated a method to measure in vivo the mitochondrial mass and activity, in sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus eggs and embryos. The analysis of captured images, revealed a variation of mitochondrial distribution and an increase of activity after fertilization.

Landscape-scale Spatial Distribution of the Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus feldeggii) Breeding Population in Italy

Falco biarmicus feldeggii is one of the most threatened taxa in Europe. Its global population is estimated at a few hundred pairs unequally scattered in a vast and fragmented area stretching from Sicily to the Caspian Sea. Most recent counts showed that Italy hosts a large part (>25%) of the whole population. Consequently, Italian authorities promoted a national action plan. In this framework, we carried out the first national survey for the Lanner Falcon in Italy (2003-2004).
