Bodily dimensions of reading and writing practices on paper and digitally

2015

The bodily aspects of reading/writing practices are investigated in Finland. The paper is considered more adaptive to varied reading purposes than the screen.Handwriting is described as a more flexible and relaxed practice than typing.Skills determine less than materials and images the practices of reading/writing.Digital interfaces determine the ways we read and write less than suggested. This article investigates the different shapes in which reading and writing practices occur when paper/pen are compared with keyboard/screen. The focus is on the bodily aspects of these practices. Reading and writing are viewed as techniques of the body, which over the years have become increasingly mediat…

A Visual Simulation Framework For Simultaneous Multithreading Architectures

2011

The computing systems, and particularly microarchitectures, are in a continuous expansion reaching an unmanageable complexity by the human mind. In order to understand and control this expansion, researchers need to design and implement larger and more complex systems’ simulators. In the current paradigm the simulators play the key role in going further, by translating all complex processing mechanisms in relevant and easy to understand information. This paper aims to make a suggestive description of the concepts and principles implemented into a Simultaneous Multithreading Architecture. We introduce the SMTAHSim framework, an educational tool that simulates in an interactive manner the imp…

Detection of developmental dyslexia with machine learning using eye movement data

2021

Dyslexia is a common neurocognitive learning disorder that can seriously hinder individuals’ aspirations if not detected and treated early. Instead of costly diagnostic assessment made by experts, in the near future dyslexia might be identified with ease by automated analysis of eye movements during reading provided by embedded eye tracking technology. However, the diagnostic machine learning methods need to be optimized first. Previous studies with machine learning have been quite successful in identifying dyslexic readers, however, using contrasting groups with large performance differences between diagnosed and good readers. A practical challenge is to identify also individuals with bord…

A new low cost power line communication solution for smart grid monitoring and management

2018

Modern smart grids require the improvement of measurement and communication infrastructures of distribution networks, at both medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) levels. Distributed sensing and measurement systems are needed to provide all necessary data for grid monitoring, control and management, as well as for the implementation of a number of smart functionalities, such as remote control of distributed generators (DGs), real time analysis of power flows, automatic meter reading (AMR), demand side management (DSM), grid automation and so on [1]-[6]. Acquired network data include typical electrical network quantities and status variables (such as powers, voltages, currents, switches …

A new PLC-based smart metering architecture for medium/low voltage grids: Feasibility and experimental characterization

2018

Abstract This paper investigates the feasibility of a smart metering architecture for modern power grids in the smart cities framework. A particular focus is made on Automatic Meter Reading, with the aim of facing some costs and safety drawbacks of current solutions (such as dependence from wireless communication providers, reliability problems in bad weather conditions, and exposition to cyber-attacks). The proposed architecture exploits power line communications (PLC) at both low and medium voltage level, thanks to new devices and an innovative medium voltage PLC coupling system. The new coupling solution and the whole smart metering architecture are experimentally verified in a wide freq…

Manulex-infra: Distributional characteristics of grapheme—phoneme mappings, and infralexical and lexical units in child-directed written material

2007

It is well known that the statistical characteristics of a language, such as word frequency or the consistency of the relationships between orthography and phonology, influence literacy acquisition. Accordingly, linguistic databases play a central role by compiling quantitative and objective estimates about the principal variables that affect reading and writing acquisition. We describe a new set of Web-accessible databases of French orthography whose main characteristic is that they are based on frequency analyses of words occurring in reading books used in the elementary school grades. Quantitative estimates were made for several infralexical variables (syllable, grapheme-to-phoneme mappi…

Spreading of Competing Information in a Network

2020

We propose a simple approach to investigate the spreading of news in a network. In more detail, we consider two different versions of a single type of information, one of which is close to the essence of the information (and we call it good news), and another of which is somehow modified from some biased agent of the system (fake news, in our language). Good and fake news move around some agents, getting the original information and returning their own version of it to other agents of the network. Our main interest is to deduce the dynamics for such spreading, and to analyze if and under which conditions good news wins against fake news. The methodology is based on the use of ladder fermion…

Researching (Algebraic) Problem Solving from the Perspective of Local Theoretical Models

2010

Concepts such as Local Theoretical Model, Mathematical Sign System, logico-semiotic outline, analytical reading, and formal competence model, elaborated within long term research programs developed in Mexico and Spain, are presented. Empirical data from a study carried out in Spain with students of a teacher training school are analyzed using this theoretical framework. The cases analyzed show to which extent the logico-semiotic outline determines the arithmetic or algebraic nature of the entire problem solving process, even in the case of pupils which had been instructed in general problem solving heuristics, management and control, including the explicit training in changing the plan of s…

Advanced C++11 Multithreading

2018

Abstract The previous chapter introduced the basic concepts of multithreading using the C++11 threading API starting with basic spawn and join approaches, while finishing with non-trivial synchronization based on mutexes and condition variables. However, the major bottleneck of application performance is usually caused by contention for a shared resource. In case of mutex-based programming all participating threads usually try to acquire the same lock in parallel which effectively serializes the program for lightweight operations such as increment/decrement or updates of a single scalar value. Fortunately, modern CPUs provide dedicated commands that allow for the efficient execution of unin…

Impact of Spreading Factor Imperfect Orthogonality in LoRa Communications

2017

In this paper we study the impact of imperfect-orthogonality in LoRa spreading factors (SFs) in simulation and real-world experiments. First, we analyze LoRa modulation numerically and show that collisions between packets of different SFs can indeed cause packet loss if the interference power received is strong enough. Second, we validate such findings using commercial devices, confirming our numerical results. Third, we modified and extended LoRaSim, an open-source LoRa simulator, to measure the impact of inter-SF collisions and fading (which was not taken into account previously in the simulator). Our results show that non-orthogonality of the SFs can deteriorate significantly the perform…
