Multimedia in Learning English as a Foreign Language as Preferred by German, Spanish, and Polish Teenagers

This paper presents the findings of a small-scale study investigating the preferences of German, Polish, and Spanish teenage English as a foreign language (EFL) learners concerning their use of multimedia, such as Skype, Facebook, YouTube, e-mails, and TV-programmes in learning English. A group of 88 respondents was requested to complete an on-line questionnaire in order to specify how often some selected types of multimedia are used by adolescents in their autonomous EFL learning, and to determine their views on the extent to which some selected multimedia affect the development of their language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and their English pronunciation. Abstract The aim of our project was to deepen understanding of the legacy of our predecessors, which are to be found in the historical centre of Sibiu, to develop map reading skills using the techniques and rules of orienteering. Most students participated enthusiastically in the search for historical sights and found the activity extremely attractive. Moreover, both the preparation stage, when the students learnt all together or in groups how to use a map in order to locate the historical sights, and the follow-up stage, when they disseminated the results, contributed to developing team spirit and a sense of belonging. Recent progresses in the design of wearable RFID-tag antennas stimulate the idea of passive body-centric systems, wherein the required power to drive the wearable tags is directly scavenged from the interrogation signal emitted by the reader unit. Vaikka vieraalla kielellä lukeminen eroaa merkittävästi äidinkielellä lukemisesta ja sitä tulisi tarkastella ympäristöönsä sidottuna ilmiönä, suuri osa lukutaidon tutkimuksesta liittyy nimenomaan äidinkielellä lukemisen tutkimukseen. The goal of this paper is to consider the challenges which Ugandan children experience in beginning to learn to read. The paper demonstrates that there are disparities between rural government and rural private school approaches to reading and between rural and urban schools. The disparities arise from the uneven ways in which the language-in-education policy is being implemented and the variation in the nature and quality of the reading pedagogy in the early years.
