Ecological plant epigenetics: Evidence from model and non-model species, and the way forward
2017
Growing evidence shows that epigenetic mechanisms contribute to complex traits, with implications across many fields of biology. In plant ecology, recent studies have attempted to merge ecological experiments with epigenetic analyses to elucidate the contribution of epigenetics to plant phenotypes, stress responses, adaptation to habitat, and range distributions. While there has been some progress in revealing the role of epigenetics in ecological processes, studies with non-model species have so far been limited to describing broad patterns based on anonymous markers of DNA methylation. In contrast, studies with model species have benefited from powerful genomic resources, which contribute…
Four steps to identify mechanisms of ICT4D: A critical realism-based methodology

Introduction to Spreadsheet Modeling and Metaheuristics
2017
Models, as a simplified representation of reality, are used daily in an attempt to control or understand some aspects of a real system. Simplification of reality is the accepted view of the modeling process, which assumes that reality represents the absolute truth. Without getting too deep into a philosophical discourse, it is worth mentioning the notion of model-dependent realism, a phrase coined by physicists Stephen Hawkings and Leonard Molinow in their book The Grand Design. Model-dependent realism “is based on the idea that our brains interpret the input from our sensory organs by making a model of the world to aid in the decision-making process.” This implies that more than one model …
A realist approach to thematic analysis: making sense of qualitative data through experiential, inferential and dispositional themes
2021
Thematic analysis (TA) is the most widely used method for analysing qualitative data. Recent debates, highlighting the binary distinctions between reflexive TA grounded within the qualitative parad...
Methodological Approach for Identifying Mechanisms in ICT4D: A Critical Realism Perspective
2017
Part 4: Social Mechanisms of ICT-Enabled Development; International audience; The ontological questions ‘What is ICT?’ and ‘What is development?’ are described and documented in literature. Similarly, methodological approaches for understanding how ICT leads to development or for measuring the impact of ICT are described. However, explaining ‘why’ ICT works or not in the contexts of developing countries needs further investigation. We propose a critical realism based methodological approach for answering the above mentioned ‘why’-question. The core of a critical realism based approach is to identify the underlying mechanism(s) that may explain a phenomenon of why ICT leads to development. W…

"Heittäydy vapauteen" : avantgarde ja Kauko Lehtisen taiteen murros 1961-1965
2007
Ulla Huhtamäki tarkastelee tutkimuksessaan taidemaalari Kauko Lehtisen (s.1925) taiteen murrosta vuosina 1961-1965. Lehtinen lähti Pariisiin kevättalvella 1961 etsimään uusia vaikutteita muuttaakseen omaa työskentelytapaansa, joka oli alkanut tuntua ”nyppimiseltä”. Lehtinen näki Pariisissa mm. uusrealistien ja uusdadaistien taidetta. Hän näki esim. Robert Rauschenbergin ja Alberto Burrin näyttelyt. Impasse Ronsin taiteilijakorttelissa Lehtinen näki Jean Tinguylen ateljeen edessä isot romukasat ja Niki de Saint Phallen ampumassa rikki väripusseja. Lehtinen tunsi olevansa ajan hermolla. Tämän matkan aikana Lehtisen työskentelyssä tapahtui syvällinen muutos. Hän hylkäsi visuaalisen mallin käyt…
Lielvaru (ASV un Ķīnas) sāncensība 21. gadsimtā
2022
Measuring consciousness in dreams: the lucidity and consciousness in dreams scale.
2013
In this article, we present results from an interdisciplinary research project aimed at assessing consciousness in dreams. For this purpose, we compared lucid dreams with normal non-lucid dreams from REM sleep. Both lucid and non-lucid dreams are an important contrast condition for theories of waking consciousness, giving valuable insights into the structure of conscious experience and its neural correlates during sleep. However, the precise differences between lucid and non-lucid dreams remain poorly understood. The construction of the Lucidity and Consciousness in Dreams scale (LuCiD) was based on theoretical considerations and empirical observations. Exploratory factor analysis of the da…
Teaching American Realism in Germany
2019
Starting with a critical introduction to the problematic beginnings and US-supported rise of American studies in pre– and post–WWII Germany, this chapter looks at the teaching of American realism and its development in a nation strongly influenced by US culture. Based on archival research, a statistical evaluation of annual bulletins, and information collected from fifty practitioners, the chapter offers the first quantitative and thematic analysis of course offerings at German universities (1953–2016), the first comparison of the relative importance of American realist literature in German university courses and research publications from German-speaking countries (2000–2015), and the firs…
