A Good Breath of Oxygen for Beta-Like Cells Obtained From Porcine Exocrine Pancreatic Tissue

2011

Ischemia is the most important factor that affects organ survival during harvesting. The two-layer method (TLM) is one of several cold storage solutions that seeks to preserve organs and cells avoiding in vivo and in vitro ischemia. We compared the retrieval of beta-like elements from exocrine pancreatic cells using TLM versus University of Wisconsin (UW) solutions. For this purpose pancreata laparoscopically harvested from 20 female pigs were preserved in UW solution or TLM before digestion. The resulting exocrine cells were divided into 2 groups: the first was cultured in a designed medium to allow differentiation into beta-like cells and the second was cryopreserved before the differenti…

Chemical Properties of Element 105 in Aqueous Solution: Halide Complex Formation and Anion Exchange into Triisoctyl Amine

2017

Studies of the halide complexation of element 105 in aqueous solution were performed on 34-s 262Ha produced in the 249Bk(18-O,5n) reaction. The 262Ha was detected by measuring the fission and alpha activities associated with its decay and the alpha decays of its daughter, 4.3-s 258Lr. Time-correlated pairs of parent and daughter alpha particles provided a unique identification of the presence of 262Ha. About 1600 anion exchange separations of 262Ha from HCl and mixed HC1/HF solutions were performed on a one-minute time scale. Reversed-phase micro-chromatographic columns incorporating triisooctyl amine (TIOA) on an inert support were used in the computer-controlled liquid chromatography appa…

Impact of Seasonality on Physical Activity: A Systematic Review.

2021

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze the available scientific evidence of the impact of seasonality on physical activity (PA). PA refers to walking, biking, sports and/or active recreation. Methods The systematic search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane and Embase. All publications from January 2015 to September 2020 assessing seasonal variations on physical activity development in adults were selected. Results A total of 1159 articles were identified, of which 26 fulfilled the selection criteria involving 9300 participants from 18 different countries. The results obtained suggest that seasonality affects PA independently o…

Application of 1H NMR-based serum metabolomic studies for monitoring female patients with rheumatoid arthritis

2015

AbstractRheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune-based inflammatory disease that leads to progressive joint degeneration, disability, and an increased risk of cardiovascular complications, which is the main cause of mortality in this population of patients. Although several biomarkers are routinely used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis, there is a high demand for novel biomarkers to further improve the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, stratification of patients, and the prediction of a better response to a specific therapy. In this study, the metabolomics approach was used to provide relevant biomarkers to improve diagnostic accuracy, define prognosis and predict and mon…

Prognostic Implications of the Standardized Study of Resection Margins in Pancreatic Cancers

2013

Abstract Introduction Involvement of surgical resection margins is a fundamental prognostic factor in pancreatic oncological surgery. However, there is a lack of standardized histopathology definition. The aims of this study are to investigate the real rate of R1 resections when surgical specimens are evaluated according to a standardized protocol and to study its survival implications. Patients and methods One hundred consecutive surgically resected patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma were included in the study. They were further divided into 2 groups: pre-protocol, evaluated before the introduction of the standardized protocol and post-protocol, analyzed with the standardized p…

Cathepsin D, B and L circulating levels as prognostic markers of malignant progression

1996

Growing evidence indicates that lysosomal Cathepsins D (CD), B (CB) and L (CL) may promote carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Therefore, we evaluated their potential value as biochemical parameters of malignant progression in patients with benign diseases which may undergo malignant transformation, such as liver cirrhosis (LC) and chronic pancreatitis (CHP) as well as in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and pancreatic cancer (DPC). CD, CB and CL serum levels were determined by immunoenzymatic assays in LC, CHP, HCC or DPC patients and correlated with a number of biochemical and clinical parameters of these diseases. CD serum levels were increased in LC, CHP and HCC, but not in the DPC grou…

Disposition of azapropazone in chronic renal and hepatic failure.

1981

The disposition of azapropazone 600 mg i.v. was investigated in 6 healthy subjects, 13 patients with cirrhosis and 8 patients with renal failure. In healthy subjects the elimination half-life was 12.2±2.1 h (mean ± SD), the volume of distribution 10.6±3.31 and the total clearance was 597±135 ml·h−1. Renal clearance accounted for about 62% of the total clearance. The free fraction of azapropazone in the plasma was 0.0045±0.0006. The patients with cirrhosis were divided into Group I with modest and Group II with severe impairment of liver function. In Group I the total clearance of azapropazone was not significantly different from that in healthy subjects. There was a 2.5-fold increase in its…

Lipase elevation and type 1 diabetes mellitus related to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy – A multicentre study of 90 patients from the German Der…

2021

Abstract Aim Immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) triggers immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The relevance of lipase elevation remains unclear. Patients and methods Skin cancer patients with newly detected serum lipase elevation (at least twofold upper normal limit) or newly diagnosed type I diabetes mellitus upon ICI therapy were retrospectively collected at 14 German skin cancer centres. Results We identified 68 patients with lipase elevation occurring after a median time of 19 (range 1–181) weeks on ICI, 15 (22%) thereof had symptoms consistent with pancreatitis. Forty-seven patients (73%) had other irAE, mainly colitis. Discontinuation (n = 24, 35%) or interruption (n = 26, 38%) of I…

A study of insulin resistance using the minimal model in nondiabetic familial combined hyperlipidemic patients.

1998

The presence of insulin resistance in 20 male nondiabetic patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH) and 20 controls of similar age and body mass index (BMI) was investigated using the minimal model method modified by the administration of insulin and an oral glucose tolerance test. The peripheral sensitivity of insulin, expressed as the insulin sensitivity index (Si), was 1.91 ± 1.05 and 2.86 ± 1.19 × 10−4 · min−1 · mU/L in FCH patients and controls, respectively (P < .01), and the corresponding value for the peripheral utilization of glucose independently of insulin (Sg) was 1.70 ± 1.13 in FCH patients and 2.35 ± 0.60 × 10−2 · min−1 in controls (P < .02). In the FCH group, the S…
