Effect of Enculturation on the Semantic and Acoustic Correlates of Polyphonic Timbre

polyphonic timbre perception was investigated in a cross-cultural context wherein Indian and Western nonmusicians rated short Indian and Western popular music excerpts (1.5 s, n = 200) on eight bipolar scales. Intrinsic dimensionality estimation revealed a higher number of perceptual dimensions in the timbre space for music from one's own culture. Factor analyses of Indian and Western participants' ratings resulted in highly similar factor solutions. The acoustic features that predicted the perceptual dimensions were similar across the two participant groups. Automated Railway Signs Detection. Preliminary Results

Abstract Nowadays safety in railways is mostly achieved by automated system technologies such as ERTMS/ETCS. Nevertheless, on local railways (suburban and regional lines) several tasks still depend on the choices and actions of a human crew. With the aim to improve safety in such type of railways, this research proposes a system for the automatic detection and recognition of railway signs by means of the digital image processing technique. First field applications, carried out on the Italian railway network, show that the proposed system is very accurate (the percentage of correctly detected railway signs is about 97%), even at high train speeds.

Lasīšana ir viena no būtiskākajām prasmēm, ko skolēni apgūst sākumskolā. Daudziem skolēniem bieži sastopamie vārdi angļu valodā sagādā grūtības, jo tie nepakļaujas zināmajām lasīšanas stratēģijām. Turklāt bieži sastopamie vārdi parādās lielos daudzumos lasīšanas tekstos. Diploma darba autore ir novērojusi, ka ir bērni no 5 līdz 6 gadu vecumam, kuriem grūtības sagādā bieži sastopamus vārdus atpazīšana, tādēļ nav augsts lasīšanas ātrums un izpratne par tekstu. Kā pētījumu metodi autore ir izvēlējusies gadījuma pētījumu, lai izpētītu, kā multisensorā pieeja var palīdzēt 5 līdz 6 gadu veciem skolēniem atpazīt bieži sastopamos vārdus. This dissertation applies and develops the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice. It is a new relational approach to justice, whose elements have been introduced by David Schlosberg in his works on environmental and ecological justice. The present study provides a systematisation of the framework and applies it to contemporary environmental topics using the methods of conceptual analysis and case-implication critique. The main outcome of this study is that the elements comprising the broad framework of environmental and ecological justice provide fresh and useful insights into topics like species extinctions and ecosystem wellbeing. Optimal Resource Allocation in Multi-Hop Networks: Contention vs. Scheduling

CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) is actually the most used method in ad-hoc networks for transmitting on a contending medium, even if it shows poor performance in presence of hidden nodes. To increase performance, we propose an algorithm that combines CSMA and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) approaches. The adopted solution consists of grouping contending nodes in non-interfering subsets and granting a different numbers of time slots to different groups, while using the CSMA to manage medium access among nodes belonging to the same subset.
