The article describes the way St. Anne’s Mountain has been presented over time by giving it different meanings and (re)interpretations on religious and historical-political levels. The religious description of this place is defined by a pompous narrative style and appealing to readers’ emotions. In the historical-political dimension, the mechanism of national mythologization and instrumentalization of St. Anne’s Mountain were shown. Ekumeniczny program św. Jana Pawła II cechuje nie tylko wymiar horyzontalny, urzeczywistniający się w osobistych spotkaniach, w wymianie myśli i duchowych darów. Obejmuje także wymiar wertykalny, polegający „na wspólnym i wzajemnym uznaniu naszej kondycji jako ludzi, którzy zgrzeszyli”, co – według Jana Pawła II – otwiera „wewnętrzną przestrzeń, w której Chrystus jako źródło jedności Kościoła może skutecznie działać mocą swego Ducha – Parakleta” (UUS, nr 35). Nadając ekumenizmowi priorytetowy charakter w programie swojego posługiwania, Jan Paweł II zwraca szczególną uwagę na dwa elementy, które wzajemnie się warunkują. Są to: „pamięć i jej oczyszczanie oraz pojednanie”.

The aim of this paper is to bring to attention the problem of genuine reconciliation between the black native population of Australia and its (white) European settlers, who have been dominating the nation in terms of political, economic and cultural power since its foundation in 1901. The focus is on political speeches stemming from open conflict to a formal Parliament’s apology for mistreatment of, especially, Stolen Generations of the later 20th century, which also has got its reflections in some prominent works of Australian literature, like Sally Morgan’s My Place (1987) and Kim Scott’s Benang (1999).

Milenijne dzieło pojednania podjęte przez prymasa Wyszyńskiego i Kościół rzymskokatolicki w Polsce znalazło swoją szczególną konkretyzację w Jasnogórskich Ślubach Narodu oraz w Wielkiej Nowennie przygotowującej naród do uroczystych obchodów Milenium chrztu Polski w 1966 roku.
