Connection between Absorption Properties and Conformational Changes in Deinococcus radiodurans Phytochrome

2014

Phytochromes consist of several protein domains and a linear tetrapyrrole molecule, which interact as a red-light-sensing system. In this study, size-exclusion chromatography and light-scattering techniques are combined with UV-vis spectroscopy to investigate light-induced changes in dimeric Deinococcus radiodurans bacterial phytochrome (DrBphP) and its subdomains. The photosensory unit (DrCBD-PHY) shows an unusually stable Pfr state with minimal dark reversion, whereas the histidine kinase (HK) domain facilitates dark reversion to the resting state. Size-exclusion chromatography reveals that all phytochrome fragments remain as dimers in the illuminated state and dark state. Still, the elut…

Acceptability of partially dealcoholized wines - Measuring the impact of sensory and information cues on overall liking in real-life settings

2009

International audience; In this study, the effect of partial alcohol reduction in wine on consumer expectation and overall liking was investigated in real-life settings (by a Home-Use-Test). By varying the wine in the bottle and by manipulating the information on the label, it was possible to assess the relative impact of sensory properties and information cues on overall liking. Standard Chardonnay and Syrah wines were partially dealcoholized from about 13.5% to about 9.5%. After bottling, these dealcoholized wines were presented once with information about real alcohol content (9.5%) and once with false information about alcohol content (13.5%). A third bottle with standard wine inside wa…

Quasi-elastic light scattering in polymer-containing microemulsion

1996

Abstract Quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) was performed in dilute water in oil microemulsion stabilized by AOT surfactant. The water-soluble polyethylene oxide (PEO) with low molecular weight (8000) added to the microemulsion seems to be confined within the aqueous microphase, since PEO is insoluble in oil (n-heptane). The measurements by QELS of diffusion coefficient, at dilute concentrations, allow determination of the size of the droplets. The phase diagram of the microemulsion undergoes remarkable changes on addition of the polymer. The results show that at fixed R ( water surfactant ratio) the droplets decrease their size as the concentration of polymer increases. This occurrence …

Protochlorophyllide Reduction: Mechanisms and Evolution¶

2007

Protochlorophyllide (Pchlide) reductases are key enzymes in the process of chlorophyll biosynthesis. In this review, current knowledge on the molecular organization, substrate specificity and assembly of the light-dependent reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate:Pchlide oxidoreductases are discussed. Characteristics of light-independent enzymes are also described briefly, and the possible reasons for the selection of light-dependent enzymes during the course of evolution are discussed.

Pressure influences on the viscosity of polymer solutions

1982

Of all physico-chemical quantities characterizing the behavior of liquids, the viscosity coefficient η is normally most sensitive to pressure. Early measurements of η(p) date back almost 100 years [1] but they were carried out with very different objectives [2]. Currently, one is particularly interested in polymer solutions, for instance because of the additives to motor oils and of oil recovery. The present paper reports on measurements with polystyrenes of high molecular uniformity in eight different solvents. It confines itself to zero-shear viscosities and discusses the possibilities of discovering the influence of pressure via the molecular structure of the solvent and via its thermody…

Effects of different emulsifiers and refining time on rheological and textural characteristics of compound chocolate

2018

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of producing reduced fat dark compound chocolate in the ball mill refiner and using some selected emulsifiers. The effects of selected emulsifiers including lecithin, Polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) and citrem in two levels and two refining times on the characteristics such as moisture, particle size, hardness and rheological properties of the samples was examined. Data analysis revealed that the Casson model was appropriate to describe the rheological behavior of the samples containing lecithin and citrem; however, Power law model was appropriate for the samples containing PGPR. The results showed that citrem is the most effe…

Von Willebrand-Syndrom - Blutungsrisiko bei HNO-Eingriffen im Kindesalter

1994

Von Willebrand's disease (vWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder. Typical clinical features such as bleeding after surgery or trauma might suggest the disease. We present a series of 24 patients with vWD treated between 1989 and 1992. Diagnosis was confirmed by a reduction in plasma factor VIII antigen concentration, reduction of ristocetin cofactor activity and reduced factor VIII activity. Seventeen of the patients underwent surgery (7 adenoidectomies, 8 tonsillectomies, 2 paranasal sinus operations) and received preoperative stimulation of von Willebrand factor (vWF) using DDAVP. This resulted in a rapid increase in plasma vWF concentration from an average of 56% before stim…

Prolonging in utero-like oxygenation after birth diminishes oxidative stress in the lung and brain of mice pups☆

2013

Background Fetal-to-neonatal transition is associated with oxidative stress. In preterm infants, immaturity of the antioxidant system favours supplemental oxygen-derived morbidity and mortality. Objectives To assess if prolonging in utero-like oxygenation during the fetal-to-neonatal transition limits oxidative stress in the lung and brain, improving postnatal adaptation of mice pups. Material and methods Inspiratory oxygen fraction (FiO2) in pregnant mice was reduced from 21% (room air) to 14% (hypoxia) 8–12 h prior to delivery and reset to 21% 6–8 h after birth. The control group was kept at 21% during the procedure. Reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione and its precursors [γ-glut…

Sex-Specific Relationship Between Parathyroid Hormone and Platelet Indices in Phenotypes of Heart Failure—Results From the MyoVasc Study

2021

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a multifactorial syndrome with pathophysiological complexities still not fully understood. Higher mean platelet volume (MPV), a potential marker of platelet activation, and high concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of HF.Aim: This study aims to investigate sex-specifically the association between PTH concentrations and platelet indices in phenotypes of HF.Methods and Results: PTH and platelet indices (MPV and platelet count) were available in 1,896 participants from the MyoVasc study in Mainz, Germany. Multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for age, sex, season, vitamin D status, cardiovascular risk …
