Observations on spore production in Spilocaea oleagina in southern Italy
1993
Sporogenesis in Spilocaea oleagina was investigated in the field in relation to climatic conditions, in a 2-year trial. At the beginning of each trial, a standard number of infected leaves still attached to the plant were gently scraped in order to remove completely all the fungal structures present on the lesion. At 1-week intervals, four such leaves were detached from the plant, examined in the laboratory for new conidiophores and conidia production, and rated for number of conidia produced by 100 conidiophores. In the first year of the trial, the fungus showed intense activity from the first week of April (beginning of the trial) to the end of April. This activity continued at reduced in…
Model Identification of a Network as Compressing Sensing
2013
In many applications, it is important to derive information about the topology and the internal connections of dynamical systems interacting together. Examples can be found in fields as diverse as Economics, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. The paper deals with the problem of deriving a descriptive model of a network, collecting the node outputs as time series with no use of a priori insight on the topology, and unveiling an unknown structure as the estimate of a "sparse Wiener filter". A geometric interpretation of the problem in a pre-Hilbert space for wide-sense stochastic processes is provided. We cast the problem as the optimization of a cost function where a set of parameters are used t…
Synthesis and Electrochemical Reactivity of sigma-Bonded and N-Substituted Cobalt Porphycenes.
1998
The first synthesis and characterization of sigma-bonded and N-substituted cobalt porphycenes is reported. The investigated compounds are represented as (Pc)Co(R) and (N-CH(3)OEPc)CoCl, where R is CH(3) or C(6)H(5), Pc is the dianion of 2,3,6,7,12,13,16,17-octaethylporphycene (OEPc), 2,7,12,17-tetrapropylporphycene (TPrPc), or 2,7,12,17-tetraethyl-3,6,13,16-tetramethylporphycene (EtioPc), N-CH(3)OEPc is the monoanion of N-methyl-2,3,6,7,12,13,16,17-octaethylporphycene. Each sigma-bonded (Pc)Co(R) derivative can be reversibly reduced or oxidized by two electrons, but a slow migration of the sigma-bonded R group occurs following electrogeneration of [(Pc)Co(R)](+)()(*)() leading, as a final p…
Positive Iron Balance in Chronic Kidney Disease: How Much is Too Much and How to Tell?
2017
Background: Regulation of body iron occurs at cellular, tissue, and systemic levels. In healthy individuals, iron absorption and losses are minimal, creating a virtually closed system. In the setting of chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis (HD), increased iron losses, reduced iron absorption, and limited iron availability lead to iron deficiency. Intravenous (IV) iron therapy is frequently prescribed to replace lost iron, but determining an individual’s iron balance and stores can be challenging and imprecise, contributing to uncertainty about the long-term safety of IV iron therapy. Summary: Patients on HD recei…
Numerical study of the Kerr solution in rotating coordinates
2016
International audience; The Kerr solution in coordinates corotating with the horizon is studied as a testbed for a spacetime with a helical Killing vector in the Ernst picture. The solution is numerically constructed by solving the Ernst equation with a spectral method and a Newton iteration. We discuss convergence of the iteration for several initial iterates and different values of the Kerr parameters.
Nanostructured lead-acid negative electrode with reduced graphene oxide
2021
Aim of this work is to develop a new nano-structured and nano-composite lead acid negative electrode with reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Nanostructured electrodes are fabricated by template electrodeposition of lead nanowires on a lead current collector. A polycarbonate track-etched membrane was used as a template (200 nm mean pores diameter). rGO was deposited on the nanostructured electrode from a graphene oxide (GO) dispersion in acetate buffer solution (ABS) (0.2 g/L). Potentiostatic deposition of rGO at -0.8 V vs. standard calomel electrode (SCE) was performed. Electrode with rGO was tested as negative electrode in cell with 5M sulfuric acid solution, a commercial pasted positive plate,…
The video game experience as 'true' identification: A theory of enjoyable alterations of players' self-perception
2009
This article introduces an explication of video game players' identification with a game character or role that is based on social-psychological models of self-perception. Contrasting with conventional ("dyadic" ) notions of media user-character relationships (e.g., parasocial interaction or affective disposition theory), ("monadic" ) video game identification is defined as a temporal shift of players' self-perception through adoption of valued properties of the game character. Implications for media enjoyment, the measurement of identification, and media effects are discussed. © 2009 International Communication Association.
Reduced-dose computed tomography is the most accurate method to measure ceramic hip resurfacing cup version
2020
Background: A precise assessment of cup version after hip resurfacing is generally requested, especially in clinical trials or in case of complications. Aims: To identify which diagnostic imaging modality, between AP pelvis X-rays, the AP Pelvis CT Scout image and reduced-dose axial CT scan, is the most precise to assess cup version of an all-ceramic hip resurfacing implant in a first-in-human clinical trial. Methods: We retrospectively assessed the cup version of the first 20 patients who underwent an experimental all-ceramic hip resurfacing on AP pelvis X-rays (0.8 mSv of radiation), AP pelvis CT scout images (0.016 mSv) and axial CT slices performed using a reduced dose protocol (0.3 mSv…
Population differences in the International Multi-Centre ADHD Gene Project.
2008
Contains fulltext : 71443.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The International Multi-Centre ADHD Gene sample consists of 674 families from eight countries (Belgium, England, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Israel, Spain, and Switzerland) ascertained from clinics for combined-type attention definity hyperactivity disorder in an offspring. 863 SNPs were successfully genotyped across 47 autosomal genes implicated in psychiatric disorders yielding a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) density of approximately one SNP per 2.5 kb. A global test of heterogeneity showed 269 SNPs nominally significant (expected 43). Inclusion of the Israeli population accounted for approximately 70% of these nom…
Harmonizing behavioral outcomes across studies, raters, and countries: application to the genetic analysis of aggression in the ACTION Consortium
2020
BACKGROUND: Aggression in children has genetic and environmental causes. Studies of aggression can pool existing datasets to include more complex models of social effects. Such analyses require large datasets with harmonized outcome measures. Here, we made use of a reference panel for phenotype data to harmonize multiple aggression measures in school-aged children to jointly analyze data from five large twin cohorts.METHODS: Individual level aggression data on 86,559 children (42,468 twin pairs) were available in five European twin cohorts measured by different instruments. A phenotypic reference panel was collected which enabled a model-based phenotype harmonization approach. A bi-factor i…
