System Design Rules for Intensifying the Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 to CO on Ag Nanoparticles

2020

Electroreduction of CO2 (eCO2RR) is a potentially sustainable approach for carbon-based chemical production. Despite significant progress, performing eCO2RR economically at scale is challenging. Here we report meeting key technoeconomic benchmarks simultaneously through electrolyte engineering and process optimization. A systematic flow electrolysis study - performing eCO2RR to CO on Ag nanoparticles as a function of electrolyte composition (cations, anions), electrolyte concentration, electrolyte flow rate, cathode catalyst loading, and CO2 flow rate - resulted in partial current densities of 417 and 866 mA/cm2 with faradaic efficiencies of 100 and 98 % at cell potentials of −2.5 and −3.0 …

Vertical bone augmentation procedures: Basics and techniques in dental implantology

2013

An appropriate bony situation is essential for dental implant placement and bony support of soft tissues (pink esthetic). Loss of teeth often results in complex horizontal and vertical alveolar ridge defects. They demand advanced bone augmentation techniques for reconstruction. We present the different techniques and materials used in complex bone augmentation. Clinical cases show the application of the methods in the clinical setting. We present current techniques and materials used in complex bone augmentations. Clinical cases show the application of the methods in the clinical setting. Applied techniques include stabilized-guided bone regeneration (GBR), autologous local block augmentati…

Electrochemical Conversion of CO2 to HCOOH at Tin Cathode: Development of a Theoretical Model and Comparison with Experimental Results

2018

The electrochemical reduction of pressurized carbon dioxide at tin cathode is considered a very promising process for the production of formic acid. Here, the process was studied in an undivided cell with the aim of developing a simple theoretical model. First, a large series of polarization and electrolyses was performed in order to evaluate the kinetic of the process. According to the literature, experimental results can be described by a simple reaction mechanism, which involves the following key stages: (i) mass transfer of CO2 to the cathode; (i) its adsorption described by a Langmuir equation; (iii) the reduction of adsorbed CO2. A simple model was developed based on the cathodic conv…

Symmetry reduction of a model in spherical symmetry for benign tumor

2004

A PDEs system, describing the expansive growth of a benign tumor and the phe- nomenon of encapsulation, is studied via a group analysis approach. A weak equiv- alence classi¯cation is obtained and the original PDEs system is reduced to an ODEs system. Numerical simulations are performed both for ODEs and PDEs, which turn out to be in perfect agreement between each other, showing a realistic enough description of the biological process.

A Simplified Analytical Approach for Optimal Planning of Distributed Generation in Electrical Distribution Networks

2019

DG-integrated distribution system planning is an imperative issue since the installing of distributed generations (DGs) has many effects on the network operation characteristics, which might cause significant impacts on the system performance. One of the most important characteristics that mostly varies because of the installation of DG units is the power losses. The parameters affecting the value of the power losses are number, location, capacity, and power factor of the DG units. In this paper, a new analytical approach is proposed for optimally installing DGs to minimize power loss in distribution networks. Different parameters of DG are considered and evaluated in order to achieve a hig…

Field estimation in wireless sensor networks using distributed kriging

2012

In this paper, we tackle the problem of spatial interpolation for distributed estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks by using a geostatistical technique called kriging. We present a novel Distributed Iterative Kriging Algorithm (DIKA) which is composed of two main phases. First, the spatial dependence of the field is exploited by calculating semivariograms in an iterative way. Second, the kriging system of equations is solved by an initial set of nodes in a distributed manner, providing some initial interpolation weights to each node. In our algorithm, the estimation accuracy can be improved by iteratively adding new nodes and updating appropriately the weights, which leads to a reduction i…

Constraint handling in efficient global optimization

2017

Real-world optimization problems are often subject to several constraints which are expensive to evaluate in terms of cost or time. Although a lot of effort is devoted to make use of surrogate models for expensive optimization tasks, not many strong surrogate-assisted algorithms can address the challenging constrained problems. Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) is a Kriging-based surrogate-assisted algorithm. It was originally proposed to address unconstrained problems and later was modified to solve constrained problems. However, these type of algorithms still suffer from several issues, mainly: (1) early stagnation, (2) problems with multiple active constraints and (3) frequent crashes.…

A contribution on the optimization strategies based on moving least squares approximation for sheet metal forming design

2012

Computer-aided procedures to design and optimize forming processes are, nowadays, crucial research topics since industrial interest in costs and times reduction is always increasing. Many researchers have faced this research challenge with various approaches. Response surface methods (RSM) are probably the most known approaches since they proved their effectiveness in the recent years. With a peculiar attention to sheet metal forming process design, RSM should offer the possibility to reduce the number of numerical simulations which in many cases means to reduce design times and complexity. Actually, the number of direct problems (FEM simulations) to be solved in order to reach good functio…

A branch-and-cut algorithm for the pallet loading problem

2005

We propose a branch-and-cut algorithm for the pallet loading problem. The 0-1 formulation proposed by Beasley for cutting problems is adapted to the problem, adding new constraints and new procedures for variable reduction. We then take advantage of the relationship between this problem and the maximum independent set problem to use the partial linear description of its associated polyhedron. Finally, we exploit the specific structure of our problem to define the solution graph and to develop efficient separation procedures. We present computational results for the complete sets Cover I (up to 50 boxes) and Cover II (up to 100 boxes).
