FIA-fluorimetric determination of thiamine.

1990

A flow injection-fluorimetric determination of thiamine is reported. The procedure is based on the oxidation of the analyte with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) immobilized on an anionic exchange resin; the fluorescence is monitored in aqueous basic solution. Concentrations of the vitamin of 0.1-4 ppm have been determined; the relative standard deviation was 1.8%. The injection rate was 28 samples/h. The influence of other substances and the determination of the drug in a pharmaceutical formulation are also reported.

α-Tocopherol Modulates Phosphatidylserine Externalization in Erythrocytes

2006

Objective— The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of α-tocopherol, the main vitamin E isomer on phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure at the surface of circulating erythrocytes, and to determine consequences on erythrocyte properties. Methods and Results— In vitro α-tocopherol enrichment of isolated erythrocytes significantly decreased PS externalization as assessed by lower Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate labeling. Plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) transfers vitamin E, and both α-and γ-tocopherol accumulated in circulating erythrocytes from PLTP-deficient homozygous (PLTP −/− ) mice as compared with wild-type mice. In agreement with in vitro studies, vitamin E–enr…

Part-of-Speech Induction by Singular Value Decomposition and Hierarchical Clustering

2006

Part-of-speech induction involves the automatic discovery of word classes and the assignment of each word of a vocabulary to one or several of these classes. The approach proposed here is based on the analysis of word distributions in a large collection of German newspaper texts. Its main advantage over other attempts is that it combines the hierarchical clustering of context vectors with a previous step of dimensionality reduction that minimizes the effects of sampling errors.

UVolc: A software platform for measuring volcanic SO2 fluxes

2012

We present here a novel stand-alone software platform, UVolc, for remotely sensed measurement of volcanic SO"2 emission rates. Such data are important diagnostics of activity conditions, with utility in forecasting measures. This code is made user friendly to enable volcanologists, who are not experts in the underlying physics of spectroscopy, to perform their own measurements. The program provides considerable reduction in errors and far greater operating flexibility than existing analogous code, which, unlike UVolc, can only interface with hardware no longer in manufacture. UVolc will be described here, including a presentation of data collected with this program in the field.

Effect of pH and nitrite concentration on nitrite oxidation rate

2011

The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. NOB were strongly affected by low pH values (no activity was detected at pH 6.5) but no inhibition was observed at high pH values (activity wa…

Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Due to Improvement of Biodegradable Waste Management System

2014

Abstract To reduce emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) from landfills, the European Union (EU) Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC requires that there be a progressive decrease in the municipal biodegradable waste disposal. The main problem of waste management (WM) in Latvia is its heavy dependence on the waste disposal at landfills. The poorly developed system for the sorted municipal waste collection and the promotion of landfilling as a major treatment option led to the disposal of 84% of the total collected municipal waste in 2012, with a high biodegradable fraction. In Latvia, the volume of emissions due to activities of the WM branch was 5.23% (632.6 CO2 eq.) of the total GHG emissions produc…

Evaluation of the use of wavefront encoding to reduce depth-induced aberration in structured-illumination microscopy

2018

Three-dimensional imaging is affected by depth-induced spherical aberration (SA) when imaging deep into an optically thick sample. In this work, we evaluate the impact of SA on the performance of incoherent grating-projection structured illumination microscopy (SIM). In particular, we analyze the reduction of the contrast in the structured pattern and compare the reconstructed SIM images for different amounts of SA. In order to mitigate the impact of SA, we implement and evaluate in SIM a wavefront encoded imaging system using a square cubic (SQUBIC) phase mask, an approach shown previously to be successful in conventional microscopy.

Anomaly Detection from Network Logs Using Diffusion Maps

2011

The goal of this study is to detect anomalous queries from network logs using a dimensionality reduction framework. The fequencies of 2-grams in queries are extracted to a feature matrix. Dimensionality reduction is done by applying diffusion maps. The method is adaptive and thus does not need training before analysis. We tested the method with data that includes normal and intrusive traffic to a web server. This approach finds all intrusions in the dataset. peerReviewed

Losing weight after menopause with minimal aerobic training and mediterranean diet

2020

Objective: It is a common belief that menopausal women have greater difficulty losing weight. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a Mediterranean diet (MD) to promote weight loss in postmenopausal women. All participants were prescribed a hypocaloric traditional MD, tailored to the individual. Subjects were asked not to begin any kind of physical activity. Body composition was measured at the beginning and after 8 weeks of treatment. In total, 89 women (age 52.8 &plusmn

Contribution of the Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS) method to the sensory description of subtle differences in partially dealcoholized red win…

2009

Abstract In this study, effect of partial alcohol reduction on the sensory modification of red wines was investigated. A Merlot and a Syrah wine were partially dealcoholized using reverse osmosis technique to span a range of three different alcohol contents (14–10%) by grape variety. Preliminary triangle tests indicated the existence of very slight differences between the dealcoholized wines of the study. Therefore, adapted descriptive methodologies had to be used. In a first step, wines were described with a comparative sensory profile by 16 trained panellists on 15 sensory attributes. Then, the same panellists profiled the wines with the TDS technique, which consists in identifying and ra…
