Semiactive–passive structural vibration control strategy for adjacent structures under seismic excitation
2012
Abstract The objective of this paper is to study a structural vibration control strategy for seismic protection of multi-structure systems that combines interstructure passive damping elements with local feedback control systems implemented in the substructures. These local feedback control systems are independently designed and operated, and use semiactive devices with limited actuation capacity as force actuators. The combined action of local semiactive feedback control systems and passive interstructure links can produce an appropriate reduction in the substructures' vibrational response and, simultaneously, provides additional protection against interstructure collisions. The proposed s…
Incremental forming of friction stir welded taylored sheets
2006
In the last decade sheet metal forming market has undergone substantial mutations since the development of more efficient strategies in terms of flexibility and cost reduction is strictly due. Such requirements are not consistent with traditional metal stamping processes which are characterized by complex equipment, capital and tooling costs; thus the industrial application of such processes is economically convenient just for large scale productions. For this reason most of the research work developed in the last years has been focused on the development of new sheet forming processes able to achieve the above discussed goals. Contemporary, with particular reference to the automotive indus…
Spectrophotometric determination of promethazine by flow injection analysis and oxidation by CeIV
1992
A flow injection analysis (FIA) procedure is proposed for the determination of promethazine. The sample solution is directly injected into the carrier-reagent stream which comprises a solution of ceric ions in a sulphuric acid medium. The absorbance at 514 nm from the red colour developed by the oxidation of promethazine is measured. Effects of foreign substances have been investigated and the procedure has been applied to the determination of promethazine in a pharmaceutical formulation (tablets).
Implementation of multicommutation principle with flow-through multioptosensors
2005
Abstract For the first time, the combination of multicommutation concept with flow-through multioptosensors is exploited and a biparameter multicommutated UV sensor is developed. A very easy-operated and automated sensing device is proposed here and demonstrated to be useful in the routine analysis by applying it to the determination of two widely used pharmaceuticals chosen as model analytes: salicylamide and caffeine. The particulated solid phase used performs two functions: (a) states selectivity conditions by itself in the flow cell and (b) provides appropriate separation of the analytes in the on-line precolumn, thus making possible the sequential arrival of the analytes to the detecti…
Refitting of an eco-friendly sailing yacht: numerical prediction and experimental validation
2016
A 4.60 m sailing yacht, made with a flax fiber composite and wood, has been refitted with the aim of hull weight reduction and performance improvement during regattas. The first objective was obtained with a lightening of internal hull reinforcements while the second one with a reduction of the maximum beam, in order to minimize the longitudinal moment of inertia. The refitting was first simulated via CAD-FEM interaction to establish the feasibility of the procedure and to verify the structural integrity. The resulting hull was then instrumented with strain gauges and tested under typical rigging and sailing conditions. Results obtained by the numerical modeling and measured from experiment…
Recent advances in the preparation of zeolites for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx in diesel engines
2019
Metal-exchanged zeolites with small pore sizes have attracted much attention in recent years due to their application in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx in diesel engines. Typically, copper-chabazite (e.g. Cu-SSZ-13) has been gradually used as an SCR catalyst in heavy-duty diesel vehicles over the last decade due to its relatively excellent catalytic performance and stability. However, most SSZ-13 zeolites are still prepared via the traditional hydrothermal process in the presence of organic templates, requiring consecutive solid separation and thermal treatment steps to achieve the final zeolite products. In recent years, several strategies for the environmentally friendly p…
Rapid Weight Loss Coupled with Sport-Specific Training Impairs Heart Rate Recovery in Greco-Roman Wrestlers
2022
Wrestling is a sport that can be classified with the use of alternating aerobic–anaerobic metabolism with moderate but high-impact energy expenditure. Heart rate recovery (HRR) is the difference between heart rate during exercise and a certain amount of time after the start of recovery. The goal of this study was to determine the difference in HRR between two phases: high-intensity sport-specific training (HISST) combined with rapid weight loss (RWL)—phase 1 (P1) and HISST only—phase 2 (P2). Ten national-level wrestlers were included in this study. All participants underwent HISST along with RWL procedures for P1. Seven days later, during P2, an identical training session …
Catalytic oxidation and reduction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present as mixtures in hydrothermal media
2012
Author's version of an article in the journal: Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/10406638.2012.663451 The reactivity of fluorene, anthracene, and fluoranthene under oxidation and reduction conditions were investigated in this study. This project looks at catalytic and green approaches of converting PAHs to less toxic and/or less stable derivatives that are amenable to further degradation. Hydrothermal reactions have been performed at 300°C with pure H2O and Nafion-SiO2 catalyst for oxidation, and pure H2O, HCOOH, Pd-C, and Nafion-SiO2 catalysts for reductive hydrogenation. Time series has been performed for both the oxidation and …
Derivatization of hydroxyl functional groups for liquid chromatography and capillary electroseparation
2013
The derivatization reactions commonly used to enhance the analytical signal in the HPLC and CE determination of compounds with hydroxyl functional groups are revised. Focus is placed on the determination of compounds having aliphatic alcohols and phenols while lacking other reactive functional groups. The derivatization with acyl chlorides, organic anhydrides, isocyanates and a variety of other approaches, including oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols, sulfonation, esterification with carboxylic acids, and the use of azides, sulfonyl chlorides and other reagents having miscellaneous leaving groups, is covered. Reactions mainly addressed to introduce a chromophore or a fluorophore in…
