Inverted-conical light guide for crosstalk reduction in tightly-packed scintillator matrix and MAPMT assembly

Abstract In this paper we present the Inverted-Conical light guide designed for optical crosstalk reduction in the scintillator-MAPMT assemblies. The research was motivated by the 30% crosstalk observed in UFFO X-ray telescope , UBAT, during the preliminary calibration with MAPMTs of 64 2.88 × 2.88 mm2 pixels and identically gridded YSO crystal matrices. We began the study with the energy and crosstalk calibrations of the detector, then we constructed a GEANT4 simulation with the customized metallic film model as the MAPMT photocathode . Influence of possible reflections on the operation of European ITER gyrotrons

The theory describing the influence of reflection s on operation of gyrotrons with radial output is used for evaluating the effect of reflections on the operation of the ITER 170 GHz 2 MW coaxial cavity gyrotron, which is under development, and the 170 GHz 1 MW cylindrical cavity gyrotron as a fall back solution.

Diffusion of neutrons by a slab of moderating material: an application of the Monte Carlo Method

An application of the Monte Carlo method to the diffusion of neutrons passing through a slab of a moderating material is presented. This method can be used as a tool to improve the student's comprehension of the statistical properties of many particle systems, showing the necessity of simulation procedures to obtain information on the expected results of real experiments. Bloch analysis of finite periodic microring chains

We apply Bloch analysis to the study of finite periodic cascading of microring resonators. Diagonalization of the standard transfer matrix approach not only allows to find an exact analytic expression for transmission and reflection, but also to derive a closed form solution for the field in every point of the structure. To give more physical insight we analyze the main features of the transmission resonances in a finite chain and we give some hints for their experimental verification

Development of a PbWO 4 detector for single-shot positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy at the GBAR experiment

International audience; We have developed a PbWO 4 (PWO) detector with a large dynamic range to measure the intensity of a positron beam and the absolute density of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) cloud it creates. A simulation study shows that a setup based on such detectors may be used to determine the angular distribution of the emission and reflection of o-Ps to reduce part of the uncertainties of the measurement. These will allow to improve the precision in the measurement of the cross section for the (anti) hydrogen formation by (anti) proton-positronium charge exchange and to optimize the yield of antihydrogen ion which is an essential parameter in the GBAR experiment.

Unusual Optical Properties of the Dense Nonequilibrium Plasma

A concise overview of new optical properties of dense nonequilibrium plasma formed on the solid state target boundary is given. In this chapter, we describe phenomena such as the third harmonic generation in the skin layer, collisionless electron heating in the high frequency skin-effect regime, absorption, and reflection and transmission of radiation by a plasma with anisotropic electron distribution.

Electron-gas clusters: the ultimate jellium model

The local spin-density approximation is used to calculate ground- and isomeric-state geometries of jellium clusters with 2 to 22 electrons. The positive background charge of the model is completely deformable, both in shape and in density. The model has no input parameters. The resulting shapes of the clusters exhibit breaking of axial and inversion symmetries; in general the shapes are far from ellipsoidal. Those clusters which lack inversion symmetry are extremely soft against odd-multipole deformations. Some clusters can be interpreted as molecules built from magic clusters. Waveguide-QED-based measurement of a reservoir spectral density

The spectral density (SD) function has a central role in the study of open quantum systems (OQSs). We discover a method allowing for a "static" measurement of the SD - i.e., it requires neither the OQS to be initially excited nor its time evolution tracked in time - which is not limited to the weak-coupling regime. This is achieved through one-dimensional photon scattering for a zero-temperature reservoir coupled to the OQS via the rotating wave approximation. We find that the SD profile is a universal simple function of the photon's reflectance and transmittance. As such, it can be straightforwardly inferred from photon's reflection and transmission spectra.

Collisions and Mechanical Wave Propagation in Elastic Rods

Some results from experiments intended to measure the propagation speed of sound waves produced by collisions between small bodies and metallic rods are analysed. Elementary models of elastic collision and of the reflection and transmission of waves at media boundaries are discussed and tested with experimental data, in the framework of a workshop on mechanical wave propagation that featured at the University of Palermo in a two-year graduate programme for prospective physics teachers and in courses for undergraduate engineering and physics students.

Extreme increase in atomic transition probability of the Cs D_2 line in strong magnetic fields under selective reflection

Selective reflection of 852-nm laser radiation from the interface between cesium vapor and the sapphire window of a 30-micrometer-thick microcell was used to record an extreme increase in the probability of the Fg=3→Fe=5 transitions associated with the Cs-atom D2 lines in magnetic fields with inductions ranging from 300 to 3200 Gauss. We showed that a group of seven transitions Fg=3, mF=−3, −2, −1, 0, +1, +2, +3→Fe=5, mF=−2, −1, 0, +1, +2, +3, +4 was formed in accordance with the selection rules ΔmF=+1 for σ+-circularly-polarized radiation.
