Mapping burns and natural reforestation using thematic Mapper data

Abstract Remote sensing techniques are specially suitable to detect and to map areas affected by forest fires. In this work, Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data has been used to study a number of forest fires that occurred in the province of Valencia (Spain) and to monitor the vegetation regeneration over burnt areas. A reference area (non‐burnt forest) was established to assess the change produced by fire. The radiance in the thermal band (10.4–12.5 μm) and the normalized difference in reflectance between near 1R (0.76–0.90 μm) and middle IR (2.08–2.35 μm) were the most suitable parameters to map burnt areas. Abstract Cellulose paper and cotton swabs have been tested as sampling, reaction and measurement media for quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) using the reagent Chromo Azurol S in the presence of aluminum cations (CAS-Al). On the basis of the results obtained a new method is proposed for the analysis of QACs in water samples which only entails the successive immersion of swabs into 1 mL of the samples, 1 mL of a solution of CAS-Al for the formation of a ternary blue complex, and 1 mL of water to remove the excess of reagent. A morphology evolution of thin films of titania from spherical mesopores to worm-shaped mesopores was realized by simply varying the sol–gel reaction time from 46 min to 25 h in the quadruple system consisting of polystyrene–block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS–b-PEO), 1,4-dioxane, concentrated HCl, and titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP). The weathering degree of the building materials and natural stones is generally quantified as the decrement of some mechanical features that can be measured experimentally by means of compressive tests or point load tests in the laboratory or Schmidt hammer tests carried out in situ. In recent years several photon induced chemical reactions involving the use of a solid catalyst have been studied. Flat fluidized beds have proved to be promising devices for carrying out these photocatalytic reactions. There is therefore a need for the modelling of light interactions within such kinds of photoreactors. In this paper, a phenomenological model is proposed for simulating the light transmission and reflection in flat fluidized gas-solid photoreactors. A detailed description of the model is presented. Sex and age-specific differences in ultraviolet reflectance of scent marks of bank voles ( Clethrionomys glareolus )

Scent markings of voles are visible via their ultraviolet reflection. Kestrels, and possibly other diurnal raptors, may use this property when hunting. We performed a laboratory study on bank voles to determine whether UV-reflectance of scent marks differs in relation to sex, age and social status. When reflectance spectra of scent marks were measured with a spectro-radiometer, we found UV reflectance to be strongest in mature males. There were no differences between mature females and immature juveniles, nor between sexes in juveniles or mature and immature individuals in females.
