Assessment of cortical damage in early multiple sclerosis with quantitative T 2 relaxometry

2016

T2 relaxation time is a quantitative MRI in vivo surrogate of cerebral tissue damage in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Cortical T2 prolongation is a known feature in later disease stages, but has not been demonstrated in the cortical normal appearing gray matter (NAGM) in early MS. This study centers on the quantitative evaluation of the tissue parameter T2 in cortical NAGM in a collective of early MS and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients, hypothesizing that T2 prolongation is already present at early disease stages and variable over space, in line with global and focal inflammatory processes in MS. Additionally, magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) mapping was performed for furt…

Radiation protection in paediatrics age

2014

Radiological protection in paediatric population from medical imaging is a subject promoted by various international associations and it is becoming a main field of interest. Paediatric patients have a significant risk from ionizing radiation (IR) following X-ray examination (chest, abdomen and skeletal segments), multidetector CT (MDCT) and PET imaging [1]. Their greater damage’s risk is due to: growing tissues with elevated turnover and high radio sensitivity cellular, the high water content which amplifies the damage, the small body size that involves the exposure of large areas associated with the expectation of long- life makes possible the development of diseases resulting from geneti…

Full field of view super-resolution imaging based on two static gratings and white light illumination.

2008

The usage of two static gratings for obtaining super-resolved imaging dates back to the work by Bachl and Lukosz in 1967. However, in their approach a severe reduction in the field of view was the necessary condition for improving the resolution. We present an approach based on two static gratings without sacrificing the field of view. The key idea for not paying with the field of view is to use white light illumination to average the ghost images obtained outside the region of interest since the positions of those images are wavelength dependent. Moreover, large magnification is achieved by using a commercial microscope objective instead of a test system with a unity magnification as prese…

Active contour algorithm with discriminant analysis for delineating tumors in positron emission tomography.

2019

Abstract In the context of cancer delineation using positron emission tomography datasets, we present an innovative approach which purpose is to tackle the real-time, three-dimensional segmentation task in a full, or at least nearly full automatized way. The approach comprises a preliminary initialization phase where the user highlights a region of interest around the cancer on just one slice of the tomographic dataset. The algorithm takes care of identifying an optimal and user-independent region of interest around the anomalous tissue and located on the slice containing the highest standardized uptake value so to start the successive segmentation task. The three-dimensional volume is then…

Eine Nierenfunktionsanalyse durch die Computertomographie

1992

The CT clearance in a number of urological patients (39 patients, 25 with normal renal function) was studied by means of an "area under curve" (AUC) method, using a region of interest. 31 patients were given meglumine ioxithalamate and 8 patients Iopamidol as a contrast medium. Both for total and partial function there was highly significant correlation with isotope clearance with good reproducibility. The difference in the pharmacokinetics of the contrast media affected the absolute clearance values.

Coupling of Action-Perception Brain Networks during Musical Pulse Processing: Evidence from Region-of-Interest-Based Independent Component Analysis

2017

Our sense of rhythm relies on orchestrated activity of several cerebral and cerebellar structures. Although functional connectivity studies have advanced our understanding of rhythm perception, this phenomenon has not been sufficiently studied as a function of musical training and beyond the General Linear Model (GLM) approach. Here, we studied pulse clarity processing during naturalistic music listening using a data-driven approach (independent component analysis; ICA). Participants’ (18 musicians and 18 controls) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) responses were acquired while listening to music. A targeted region of interest (ROI) related to pulse clarity processing was defined…

Remote Photoplethysmography Based on Implicit Living Skin Tissue Segmentation

2016

International audience; Region of interest selection is an essential part for remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) algorithms. Most of the time, face detection provided by a supervised learning of physical appearance features coupled with skin detection is used for region of interest selection. However, both methods have several limitations and we propose to implicitly select living skin tissue via their particular pulsatility feature. The input video stream is decomposed into several temporal superpixels from which pulse signals are extracted. Pulsatility measure for each temporal superpixel is then used to merge pulse traces and estimate the photoplethysmogram signal. This allows to select …

Preprocessing of region of interest localization based on local surface curvature analysis for three-dimensional reconstruction with multiresolution

2009

We present an approach to integrate a preprocessing step of the region of interest ROI localization into 3-D scanners laser or ste- reoscopic. The definite objective is to make the 3-D scanner intelligent enough to localize rapidly in the scene, during the preprocessing phase, the regions with high surface curvature, so that precise scanning will be done only in these regions instead of in the whole scene. In this way, the scanning time can be largely reduced, and the results contain only per- tinent data. To test its feasibility and efficiency, we simulated the prepro- cessing process under an active stereoscopic system composed of two cameras and a video projector. The ROI localization is…

An Artificial Decision Maker for Comparing Reference Point Based Interactive Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization Methods

2021

Comparing interactive evolutionary multiobjective optimization methods is controversial. The main difficulties come from features inherent to interactive solution processes involving real decision makers. The human can be replaced by an artificial decision maker (ADM) to evaluate methods quantitatively. We propose a new ADM to compare reference point based interactive evolutionary methods, where reference points are generated in different ways for the different phases of the solution process. In the learning phase, the ADM explores different parts of the objective space to gain insight about the problem and to identify a region of interest, which is studied more closely in the decision phas…

Automatic multi-seed detection for MR breast image segmentation

2017

In this paper an automatic multi-seed detection method for magnetic resonance (MR) breast image segmentation is presented. The proposed method consists of three steps: (1) pre-processing step to locate three regions of interest (axillary and sternal regions); (2) processing step to detect maximum concavity points for each region of interest; (3) breast image segmentation step. Traditional manual segmentation methods require radiological expertise and they usually are very tiring and time-consuming. The approach is fast because the multi-seed detection is based on geometric properties of the ROI. When the maximum concavity points of the breast regions have been detected, region growing and m…
