Moderate consumption of beer reduces liver triglycerides and aortic cholesterol deposit in LDLr-/- apoB100/100 mice.

This study was designed to address the effects of a moderate consumption of beer on serum and liver lipid parameters and on the development of aortic lesions in a mouse model associated with a human atherogenic lipoprotein profile. LDLr(-/-) apoB(100/100) mice received each day during 12 weeks either water, mild beer (0.570g of ethanol/kg of body weight) or ethanol-free beer in a single pure dose. Differential miRNA expression defines migration and reduced apoptosis in follicular thyroid carcinomas.

The objective of the study was to identify microRNAs (miRs) characteristic for follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and to define their role in tumorigenesis. A miR-microarray study was conducted to identify miRs differentially expressed between FTCs and their surrounding tissues. Selection was further reinforced by a literature review. Four miRs were selected and confirmed by RT-qPCR: miR-146b, -183, -221 were up-regulated, whereas miR-199b down-regulated in FTCs. The influence of these miRs on cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis and migration was studied in HTori and FTC-133 cells. Circadian rhythm in NO synthase I transcript expression and its photoperiodic regulation in the rat pineal gland.

The photoneural regulation of nitric oxide synthase type I (NOS I) expression in the rat pineal was investigated using semiquantitative RT-PCR. NOS I transcript expression exhibited a daily rhythm with peak values during the night hours. The daily rhythm in NOS I transcript expression persisted under constant dark conditions and was abolished under constant light conditions. The extent of nocturnal NOS I expression was found to be dependent on the photoperiod. It was attenuated under 20 h light and 4 h dark (L:D 20:4) compared with 12 h light and 12 h dark (L:D 12:12). Reduced glutathione (GSH) depletion and inflammation have been linked to chronic aspartame consumption. However, the cause of aspartame-induced GSH depletion and the role of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in aspartame-triggered inflammation are still unknown. Limited studies have been carried out on the biotransformation of carboxyl nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the liver. However, the role of the intestine in NSAID metabolism has not been investigated. In this report, the contribution of UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract from five donors to the glucuronidation of the NSAIDs, RS-ketoprofen, S-naproxen, RS- and S-etodolac, was investigated. Role of GSH in the modulation of NOS-2 expression in the weaned mammary gland

GSH delivery to the lactating mammary gland is essential for the maintenance of lactation as its decrease leads to apoptosis and involution of the mammary gland. In fact, it has already been demonstrated that some of the changes in gene expression found in the lactating mammary gland after forced weaning are reproduced in rats treated with buthionine sulphoximine to deplete GSH levels. An oligonucleotide microarray experiment would give us a better knowledge of the mRNA expression patterns during lactation and after weaning and the possible functions of GSH in the modulation of these events.

Antiapoptotic effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide on oxidative stress-induced injury in H9c2 cardiomyocytes via the RAMP1/CRLR complex.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) plays an important role in the mediation of protective effects observed in situations such as ischemic preconditioning in rat hearts. In this study, we investigated in H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts if the protective effect of CGRP could be linked to an inhibitory effect on the apoptotic pathway. We also determined the specificity of observed effects by treatment with adrenomedullin (ADM) in stress conditions generated by 100 microM hydrogen peroxide.
