Ligand-based discovery of novel trypanosomicidal drug-like compounds: In silico identification and experimental support
2010
Abstract Two-dimensional bond-based linear indices and linear discriminant analysis are used in this report to perform a quantitative structure–activity relationship study to identify new trypanosomicidal compounds. A database with 143 anti-trypanosomal and 297 compounds having other clinical uses, are utilized to develop the theoretical models. The best discriminant models computed using bond-based linear indices provides accuracies greater than 90 for both training and test sets. Our models identify as anti-trypanosomals five out of nine compounds of a set of already-synthesized substances. The in vitro anti-trypanosomal activity of this set against epimastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi…
Principal component analysis on molecular descriptors as an alternative point of view in the search of new Hsp90 inhibitors
2009
Inhibiting a protein that regulates multiple signal transduction pathways in cancer cells is an attractive goal for cancer therapy. Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is one of the most promising molecular targets for such an approach. In fact, Hsp90 is a ubiquitous molecular chaperone protein that is involved in folding, activating and assembling of many key mediators of signal transduction, cellular growth, differentiation, stress-response and apoptothic pathways. With the aim to analyze which molecular descriptors have the higher importance in the binding interactions of these classes, we first performed molecular docking experiments on the 187 Hsp90 inhibitors included in the BindingDB, a pu…
Si esto es un padre
2016
Predatory journals and conferences: why fake counts
2020
Purpose of review Predatory publishing poses a serious educational end ethical threat to the credibility of science. The aim of this review is to discuss the main features of this deceptive open-access model, its potential consequences and relevance for the whole scientific community. Recent findings Recent reports showed that scholars and clinicians from all research fields, including anesthesiology, are facing an alarming invasion of predatory journals and, more recently, fake conferences. This review discusses key elements of these phenomena and proposes countermeasures to tackle the problem. Summary Predatory journals and conferences are two sides of the same coin. As here reviewed, the…
The effects of associative and semantic priming in the lexical decision task.
2001
Four lexical decision experiments were conducted to examine under which conditions automatic semantic priming effects can be obtained. Experiments 1 and 2 analyzed associative/semantic effects at several very short stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs), whereas Experiments 3 and 4 used a single-presentation paradigm at two response-stimulus intervals (RSIs). Experiment 1 tested associatively related pairs from three semantic categories (synonyms, antonyms, and category coordinates). The results showed reliable associative priming effects at all SOAs. In addition, the correlation between associative strength and magnitude of priming was significant only at the shortest SOA (66 ms). When prime-t…
Building energy demand assessment through heating degree days: the importance of a climatic dataset
2019
Abstract The weather is one of the main factors to consider when designing a building because it represents the most important boundary condition to affect the dynamic behaviour of the building. In the literature, many studies use the degree day to predict building energy demand. However, linking the results obtained from a generic building simulation tool with defined degree days, will not give reliable energy evaluation. The goal of this study is to demonstrate that the assessment of building energy demand through the use of the degree day is correct only if the determination of the climate index is a function of the same weather data. The relationship between Heating Degree-Day and heati…
Building energy performance forecasting: A multiple linear regression approach
2019
Abstract Different ways to evaluate the building energy balance can be found in literature, including comprehensive techniques, statistical and machine-learning methods and hybrid approaches. The identification of the most suitable approach is important to accelerate the preliminary energy assessment. In the first category, several numerical methods have been developed and implemented in specialised software using different mathematical languages. However, these tools require an expert user and a model calibration. The authors, in order to overcome these limitations, have developed an alternative, reliable linear regression model to determine building energy needs. Starting from a detailed …
Introduction to the communication and information systems technology for emergency management minitrack
2013
The world spends annually between 16 and 23 billion US dollars in disaster assistance. In 2010 an estimated 373 natural disasters occurred, causing 296, 800 victims and affecting more than 207 million people. By 2050 the number of people living in areas especially prone to natural disasters will probably double (from 680 to 1500 million). Communication and Information System Technology is profoundly changing the management of disasters and emergencies. Mobile devices and social media are being used by citizens in innovative ways to help them manage the consequences of disasters for themselves, families, and communities. The trend of increasing traffic flow originating from affected citizens…
Applying data driven decision making to rank vocational and educational training programs with TOPSIS
2021
Abstract In this paper we present a multi-criteria classification of Vocational and Educational Programs in Extremadura (Spain) during the period 2009–2016. This ranking has been carried out through the integration into a complete database of the detailed information of individuals finishing such studies together with their labor data. The multicriteria method used is TOPSIS together with a new decision support method for assessing the influence of each criterion and its dependence on the weights assigned to them. This new method is based on a worst-best case scenario analysis and it is compared to a well known global sensitivity analysis technique based on the Pearson's correlation ratio.
The Evaluation of Public Managers’ Performances in the Light of Italian Public Administration Reform
2011
One of the most important element in the analysis of public administration’s performances is the management. In fact it is the connection point between objectives (fixed at political level) and the system of outputs and outcomes, achieved by public personnel at different levels. This is the main reason why during the last decades, the reform of Italian public administration has concentrated on improving public action performances, by a regulation of public management and the connected introduction of two key words: autonomy and accountability. This means that managers should be endowed of greater autonomy in the execution of their managerial activities and, at the same time, they are fully …
