Euroregions as political actors: managing border policies in the time of Covid-19 in Polish borderlands
2022
The article examines the role of the Euroregions in the first Covid-19 pandemic wave in Europe. The beginning of the pandemic in the spring of 2020 led to the closures of state borders. This complicated the situation of Polish cross-border commuters working in Germany and the Czech Republic. The border closure also showed the strength of Euroregions, able to react and transmit the demands of borderlanders to the Polish government. To analyse this question, we adapt the deliberative system theory. The actions taken by Euroregions, as institutions of public space, were considered as deliberative consequences of non-deliberative actions of government.
More Relevant Today Than Ever: Past, Present and Future of Media Performance Research
2020
Media performance is constitutive for functioning democracies. But what is the situation regarding media performance in the age of digitalisation? And how can media performance continue to be assured under the current difficult economic conditions for the news industry? In this essay, we give a short overview of how media performance research has developed from the introduction of private broadcasting to the spread of the Internet and social media. In the course of this development, the initial focus of media performance research on media content has broadened to include media quality from the user perspective. We show how the contributions to this thematic issue relate with existing lines …
Functional stability of the nitrate-reducing community in grassland soils towards high nitrate supply
2006
Abstract To study the effects of short-term fluctuation of nitrate concentrations on the nitrate-reducing community, repacked soil cores were amended with 0, 100 and 300 μ g NO 3 - ‐ N g - 1 soil and incubated for 3, 7 and 14 days, respectively. The nitrate reductase activity was determined in a laboratory-based enzyme assay. In parallel, the community structure of nitrate-reducing microorganisms was characterised by RFLP-PCR using the functional gene narG , which encodes the catalytic site of the membrane-bound nitrate reductase. The community structure remained constant over the experimental period indicating that this functional community is characterised by a high resistance towards flu…

Unscrambling the Average User of Habbo Hotel
2007
The “user” is an ambiguous concept in human-computer interaction and information systems. Analyses of users as social actors, participants, or configured users delineate approaches to studying design-use relationships. Here, a developer’s reference to a figure of speech, termed the “average user,” is contrasted with design guidelines. The aim is to create an understanding about categorization practices in design through a case study about the virtual community, Habbo Hotel. A qualitative analysis highlighted not only the meaning of the “average user,” but also the work that both the developer and the category contribute to this meaning. The average user a) represents the unknown, b) influen…
Relational tourism: challenges and capabilities
2010
The observed changes in the orientation of tourism demand, both in taste and in the needs and preferences of the tourist consumer, in the last three decades, have brought to the birth of new ways of interpreting the tourism phenomenon; among these we highlight Relational Tourism, a phenomenon that can be perceived as human-scale tourism, clearly based on territorial, cultural and environmental constraints that include travel formats such as rural tourism, cultural tourism, farm tourism, environmental tourism, outdoor activity tourism and many new ways, which have shown an important quantitative growth of Relational Tourism demand in Europe and internationally in the last decades, offering a…
