How can skin conductance responses increase over trials while skin resistance responses decrease?

1985

It is shown that the opposite trends over trials for conductance and resistance response magnitudes that have been found in recent experiments can be explained entirely by the mathematical relationship between conductance and resistance. Two conditions have to be satisfied for such opposite trends to occur: (1) a substantial increase in conductance level over the course of an experiment, and (2) a certain increase in conductance response magnitudes. The opposition in trends, being due solely to the mathematical relationship between conductance and resistance, should not be eliminated by some “correction” procedure. Instead, conductance should be taken as the appropriate variable. Also, no c…

EXPERIMENTS WITH EVERYDAY SUBSTANCES FOR AN INTERESTING AND PRODUCTIVE LEARNING IN CHEMISTRY

2012

A concept “Chemistry for life” developed in Germany characterises a number of the-ses generally recognised in modern didactics, from which the principle “from the simple to more difficult” and psychological laws of learning are highlighted. This concept is in par-ticular characterised by the thesis that chemistry studies should be based on student every-day notions. The foundation of chemistry studies is experimentation with everyday substanc-es. The concept “Chemistry for life” can be successfully used for acquiring chemistry in schools in Latvia by intensifying the use of experiments with everyday substances and devel-oping student inquiry skills. Key words: chemistry for life, chemistry …

May we give legitimacy and a legal shape to citizens' activities directed to regeneration and re-use of goods of common interest? Taxation (i.e. tax expenses) can encourage these activities? We may answer the first question that the evolving concept of the so said “sussidiarietà orizzontale” seems to be the most appropriate tool to give the actions of private citizens directed to take care of common goods (i.e. cultural heritage or goods that can be used by a given community) a legal framework. To answer the second question we have to face the issue concerning the relationship between taxation and “sussidiarietà orizzontale” notably if tax expenses can be considered in any way a developing tool for the latter. This paper aim to face these issues.Settore IUS/12 - Diritto Tributario

High dose naloxone does not improve cerebral or myocardial blood flow during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in pigs

1997

In a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial we tested the hypothesis that naloxone given during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) enhances cerebral and myocardial blood flow. Twenty-one anesthetized, normoventilated pigs were instrumented for measurements of right atrial and aortic pressures, and regional organ blood flow (radiolabeled microspheres). After 5 min of untreated fibrillatory arrest, CPR was commenced using a pneumatic chest compressor/ventilator. With onset of CPR, an i.v. bolus of 40 micrograms/kg b.w. of epinephrine was given, followed by an infusion of 0.4 micrograms/kg per min. After 5 min of CPR, either naloxone, 10 mg/kg b.w. (group N, n = 11) o…

A four-node MITC finite element for magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates

2013

An isoparametric four-node finite element for multilayered magneto-electro-elastic plates analysis is presented. It is based on an equivalent single-layer model, which assumes the first order shear deformation theory and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields. First, the electro-magnetic state of the plate is determined in terms of the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements, by solving the strong form of the magneto-electric governing equations coupled with the electro-magnetic interface continuity conditions and the external boundary conditions. In turn, this result is used into the layers constitutive law to infer the equivalent single-layer…

Social Media Marketing and Value Co-creation: A Dynamic Performance Management Perspective

2017

The diffusion of web-based technologies has transformed the today consumers, shifting them from mere users to content generators, able to influence each other’s opinions and choices. Such trend discloses important consequences for firms, products and brands. In order to support strategic and operational decision-making, this study frames the phenomenon of social media marketing into the value co-creation paradigm and shows how to design an analytical framework combining performance management and System Dynamics.

School Mediation under the Spotlight: What Spanish Secondary Students Think of Mediation

2019

Educational professionals and policy-makers need to update their strategies to address and prevent school violence. Mediation has proved to be a useful tool for peace-building in different countries by developing individuals, their relationships, and the school climate. However, little research has assessed mediation practices. This study aims to evaluate mediation through the perceptions of secondary school students in Spain in order to highlight strengths and weaknesses of school mediation programs. It specifically aims to learn from the assessment by those who attended mediation and to detect whether there exist any significant differences regarding gender and school year. To do this, we…

Communication skills in medicine: where do we come from and where are we going?

2015

The physician-patient relationship has changed throughout history, as the role of physician has been transformed. Modern physicians need to be educated on how to use highly specialized knowledge when approaching the patient as a unique and whole person living in a given psychological, social, and material context. This relationship evolved from a paternalistic model to a cooperative-deliberative one, representing a meeting between two “experts:” the physician as the medical expert and the patient as the expert on himself. According to this model, communication between patients and physicians must be based on common understanding in a caring and dynamic relationship that also involves the pa…
