Combining Knowledge of Physics and Chemistry in Teaching: The Behaviour of a Narrow Jet of Water in the Presence of Charged Insulators

In this study the aim was to find out how student teachers applied their knowledge, in physics and chemistry, in an upper secondary science topic. The first stage consisted of an analysis of the upper secondary students’ interpretations of an experiment in which a charged rod is brought near another charged rod and a narrow jet of water. The second stage of the study was based on these results. The main research question was: How do the student teachers apply their knowledge to their explanations? Fluctuations and lack of self-averaging in the kinetics of domain growth

The fluctuations occurring when an initially disordered system is quenched at timet=0 to a state, where in equilibrium it is ordered, are studied with a scaling theory. Both the mean-sizel(t)d of thed-dimensional ordered domains and their fluctuations in size are found to increase with the same power of the time; their relative size fluctuations are independent of the total volumeLd of the system. This lack of self-averaging is tested for both the Ising model and the φ4 model on the square lattice. Both models exhibit the same lawl(t)=(Rt)x withx=1/2, although the φ4 model has “soft walls”. N-string vertices in string field theory.

We give the general form of the vertex corresponding to the interaction of an arbitrary number of strings. The technique employed relies on the ``comma" representation of String Field Theory where string fields and interactions are represented as matrices and operations between them such as multiplication and trace. The general formulation presented here shows that the interaction vertex of N strings, for any arbitrary N, is given as a function of particular combinations of matrices corresponding to the change of representation between the full string and the half string degrees of freedom.

Effects of alpha-melanotropin C-terminal tripeptide analogues on macrophage NO production.

The C-terminal tripeptide of melanocyte-stimulating hormone, MSH (11-13) (Lys-Pro-Val), possesses strong anti-inflammatory actions, which are mediated via mechanisms that are not fully understood. To shed more light into these mechanisms we have here synthesised and evaluated the activities of L- and D-Val substituted cyclic modifications of MSH (11-13) on nitric oxide (NO) in macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, as well as on binding to melanocortin receptors (MCRs) in B16-F1 and MCR expressing insect cells, and for effects on cAMP. Neutralization of interleukin-18 reduces severity in murine colitis and intestinal IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha production.

Interleukin (IL)-18, initially described as interferon (IFN)-gamma-inducing factor, is expressed in the inflamed mucosa of patients with Crohn's disease. To investigate the role of IL-18 in intestinal inflammation, the effect of neutralizing antimurine IL-18 antiserum in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice was examined. During a dose response of DSS, levels of colonic IL-18 increased parallel with clinical worsening. With the use of confocal laser microscopy, the increased IL-18 was localized to the intestinal epithelial layer. Defense Responses of Fusarium oxysporum to 2,4-Diacetylphloroglucinol, a Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic Produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens

A collection of 76 plant-pathogenic and 41 saprophytic Fusarium oxysporum strains was screened for sensitivity to 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (2,4-DAPG), a broad-spectrum antibiotic produced by multiple strains of antagonistic Pseudomonas fluorescens. Approximately 17% of the F. oxysporum strains were relatively tolerant to high 2,4-DAPG concentrations. Tolerance to 2,4-DAPG did not correlate with the geographic origin of the strains, formae speciales, intergenic spacer (IGS) group, or fusaric acid production levels. Cadmium effects on development and reproduction of Oncopeltus fasciatus (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae)

Newly hatched nymphs of the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus were exposed to various concentrations of CdCl2 administered in drinking water until the end of adult life. Significant nymphal mortalities were observed at concentrations above 30 mg Cd/l (corresponding to the LC50). The duration of the nymphal stages increased in proportion to the Cd concentration; at the lowest Cd concentration of 10 mg Cd/l, the median duration was significantly prolonged by one day, while at the highest concentration of 100 mg Cd/l it was increased by 10 days over the control group. Fatty acids bind to the fungal elicitor cryptogein and compete with sterols

Abstract Cryptogein is a proteinaceous elicitor of plant defense reactions which also exhibits sterol carrier properties. In this study, we report that this protein binds fatty acids. The stoichiometry of the fatty acid–cryptogein complex is 1:1. Linoleic acid and dehydroergosterol compete for the same site, but elicitin affinity is 27 times lower for fatty acid than for sterol. We show that C7 to C12 saturated and C16 to C22 unsaturated fatty acids are the best ligands. The presence of double bonds markedly increases the affinity of cryptogein for fatty acids. A comparison between elicitins and known lipid transfer proteins is discussed.
